An unusual case of multilocular cystic nephroma with prominent renal pelvis involvement

Multilocular cystic nephroma (MCN) is a relatively rare, benign tumor of uncertain etiology. It typically arises from the renal parenchyma and is often treated with nephrectomy. We report a case of MCN with unusual prominent renal pelvis extension. A left nephrectomy was performed. A multilocular cystic lesion was found in the removed specimen, which had a direct tumor extension into the renal pelvis. There were no signs of malignancy. The tumor extension into the renal pelvis has been found in very few reports. This growth pattern might be one of the characteristics of this benign renal tumor.

Local recurrence of a unilateral cystic nephroma

Cystic nephroma is an uncommon, benign renal lesion. We report the first case of local recurrence of a unilateral cystic nephroma in an adult. Only three cases of recurrence in bilateral cystic nephroma have been described in the literature before. Other renal lesions may not be differentiated preoperatively from cystic nephroma and thus require surgical exploration. Long-term follow-up is recommended to rule out local recurrence.

Partial nephrectomy in a metachronous multilocular cyst of the kidney (cystic nephroma)

Cystic nephroma, that is multilocular cyst, is an uncommon renal neoplasm once thought to occur only unilaterally. We report a rare case of bilateral metachronous cystic nephroma in a child, which was treated by partial nephrectomy. Because of its benign nature this lesion is best managed by nephron sparing surgery. Exploration of the contralateral kidney is not necessary if modern radiological techniques are used. Magnetic resonance imaging angiography is an excellent noninvasive method to assess renal vessels before partial nephrectomy. Periodic ultrasound or computerized tomography screening of the remaining renal unit is recommended.

Multilocular cysts of kidney. A study of 29 patients and review of literature

Multilocular renal cyst is a distinct renal tumor whose gross external appearance and absence of normal renal tissue within the septa of loculi distinguish it clearly from other renal cystic lesions. Interlocular septa may contain either (1) fibrous tissue alone or (2) embryonic tissue separating adjacent loculi. Of 29 patients with multilocular renal cysts, 24 underwent a renal-sparing procedure, and only 5 had radical nephrectomy. None of the histologic specimens showed evidence of immature renal tissue or neoplasia. Patients were followed from three months to eight years (mean, 39 months), and no evidence of local recurrence or metastatic disease was found. Because it is difficult to distinguish multilocular renal cyst from cystic Wilms tumor and multicystic clear cell carcinoma on the basis of imaging studies alone, surgical intervention is the only effective method to differentiate multilocular renal cyst from a malignant lesion of the kidney.

We describe a child with a multilocular renal cyst who presented with a renal mass and pain due to haemorrhage into the cyst. This type of presentation has not been reported previously.

Multilocular cystic renal adenocarcinoma: a case report and review of the literature

A case of multilocular cystic renal adenocarcinoma is presented. Although the multilocular renal cyst is an uncommon lesion, nine cases of these lesions associated with adenocarcinoma have been reported in the English literature so far. The related reports are reviewed in addition to three cases in the Japanese literature.
