Primary carcinoid tumor of the testis

Primary carcinoid tumors of the testis are exceedingly rare. Thirty-one primary tumors have been reported in the literature, none of which have been diagnosed preoperatively. We present a case report demonstrating the sonographic features of a testicular carcinoid which may contribute to an early preoperative diagnosis.

Testicular neuroblastoma

We describe, in a young boy, a case of neuroblastoma presenting only as a painless unilateral testicular mass. Clinical and laboratory evidence of disseminated neuroblastoma was first apparent nine months after high orchiectomy. As far as we are aware this is the only reported instance of testicular neuroblastoma in the absence of disseminated disease. Discussion is directed to the possible explanations for this rare testicular lesion, and in addition, underlines the potential difficulties in the diagnosis of certain small cell tumors.

The management of testicular epidermoid cysts and other benign intra-tunica albuginea testicular tumours with particular reference to scrotal ultrasound studies

Malignant tumours of the testis are the leading cause of cancer death in males between the ages of 25 and 35. Benign cystic or solid intra-tunica albuginea tumours of the testis are rare. Testicular ultrasound studies are not sufficiently accurate to establish a pre-operative diagnosis of a benign intra-tunica albuginea tumour but may assist in the diagnosis of inflammation, unequal uniform testicular size or where the anatomy has been altered by previous surgery or trauma.

Benign testis tumors

Benign testis tumors are reported to be extraordinarily rare. Recent clinical experience has shown a high prevalence (7 of 12 patients) of these tumors, which, although small, is much higher than other reports. We herein present 4 illustrative cases and a practical categorization of the varied pathologic events causing these tumors.

Primary carcinoid of the testis with metastases

A case of pure carcinoid of the testis is reported. The patient presented with metastatic carcinoid and the carcinoid syndrome 17 years after removal of the primary tumor. He died 2 years later. The long interval from initial orchiectomy to presentation with metastases strongly suggests that the original lesion was primary rather than metastatic. Only 2 cases have been reported to date in which an apparently pure primary testicular carcinoid developed metastases. In both of these cases the possibility that the testicular lesion itself was metastatic was not excluded.

Carcinoid tumor of kidney

A case of carcinoid tumor of the kidney is reported. Pathologic findings of the tumor, clinical manifestation, and treatment are discussed.

Primary carcinoid of the kidney: light and electron microscopic study

A case of an asymptomatic primary renal carcinoid tumor in a 61-year-old male is presented. The tumor was large with extensive hemorrhagic necrosis. Metastases were present in para-aortic lymph nodes. Ultrastructurally, dense core granules and masses of cytoplasmic filaments, including tonofilaments, were seen. The granules were faintly argyrophilic. The relevant literature is reviewed.

Primary carcinoid of prostate

The first case of pure primary prostatic carcinoid is presented. Previous demonstration of the presence of enterochromaffin cells in the non-neoplastic prostate and in otherwise ordinary adenocarcinomas of the prostate furnishes a basis for the origin of this unique neoplasm.

Primary carcinoid tumor of the testis: case report, ultrastructure and review of the literature

A case of primary pure carcinoid tumor of the testis which occurred in a 71-year-old male is reported. The patient was treated by radical orchiectomy and remains well and symptom free 10 months after operation. Histologically as well as ultrastructurally the tumor showed typical appearances of carcinoid tumor of midgut derivation. 23 cases of carcinoid tumors of the testis were discovered in the literature. Of these 17 were primary testicular carcinoids, and 6 were metastatic to the testis. Of the 17 cases of primary carcinoid tumors, 14 were pure carcinoids and only 3 were associated with teratoma. None of the primary testicular carcinoids were associated with metastases and the prognosis after orchiectomy was excellent, thus indicating that no further therapy is necessary. The prognosis of patients with carcinoid metastatic to the testis is poor. In view of this it is very important to determine whether the tumor is primary or metastatic.
