Abstract
Sargassum fusiforme has a wide range of active constituents (such as polysaccharides, sterols, polyphenols, terpenes, amino acids, trace elements, etc.) and is an economically important brown algae with a long history. In recent years, S. fusiforme has been intensively studied and has attracted wide attention in the fields of agriculture, environment, medicine, and functional food. In this review, we reviewed the current research status of S. fusiforme at home and abroad over the past decade by searching Web of science, Google Scholar, and other databases, and structurally analyzed the active components of S. fusiforme, and on this basis, we focused on summarizing the cutting-edge research and scientific issues on the role of various active substances in S. fusiforme in exerting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antidiabetic, immunomodulatory, antiviral antibacterial, and anticoagulant effects. The mechanisms by which different substances exert active effects were further summarized by exploring different experimental models and are shown visually. It provides a reference to promote further development and comprehensive utilization of S. fusiforme resources.

Abstract
Acute lung injury (ALI) is the most common complication of sepsis. Intravenous injection of HUMSCs can regulate the level of circulating endothelial cytokines and alleviate lung injury in juvenile septic rats. In this study, we performed proteomic and phosphorylated proteomic analysis of lung tissue of juvenile septic rats after Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells (HUMSCs) intervention for the first time, and screened the potential proteins and pathways of HUMSCs for therapeutic effect. The 4D proteome quantitative technique was used to quantitatively analyze the lung tissues of septic rats 24 hours (3 biological samples) and 24 hours after HUMSCs intervention (3 biological samples). A total of 213 proteins were identified as differentially expressed proteins, and 971 phosphorylation sites changed significantly. Based on the public database, we analyzed the functional enrichment of these proteins and phosphorylated proteins. In addition, Tenascin-C may be the key differential protein and ECM receptor interaction pathway may be the main signal pathway by using various algorithms to analyze the protein-protein interaction network. Phosphorylation analysis showed that tight junction pathway was closely related to immune inflammatory reaction, and EGFR interacted most, which may be the key differential phosphorylated protein. Finally, 123 conserved motifs of serine phosphorylation site (pS) and 17 conserved motifs of threonine (pT) phosphorylation sites were identified by motif analysis of phosphorylation sites. Results from proteomics and phosphorylated proteomics, the potential new therapeutic targets of HUMSCs in alleviating lung injury in juvenile septic rats were revealed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have assessed the association of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with cognitive impairment (COI) in clinical settings. Whether NLR is associated with COI among free-living seniors at population level remains unknown. OBJECTIVES We aimed to assess the relationship between NLR and COI among community-dwelling older adults and the predictive value of NLR for COI screening in the community. METHODS Data of 4579 older adults aged 60 or older in Weitang Geriatric Diseases study, a community-based cross-sectional study conducted in Suzhou located in the east part of China, were analyzed. The NLR was calculated as the absolute neutrophil count divided by the absolute lymphocyte count. Cognitive function of the participants was assessed using the Abbreviated Mental Test. RESULTS Compared to those in the first quartile of NLR, older adults in the 4th quartile of NLR had a greater risk of COI (odds ratio = 1.34, 95 % confidence interval = 1.06-1.69). Elevated NLR quartile was associated with increasing risk of COI (p value for trend = 0.02). Addition of NLR to the conventional risk factors model could improve the correct reclassification of COI about 9.0 % (p = 0.02) and integrated discrimination improvement value was 0.0012 (p = 0.09). CONCLUSIONS We found that elevated NLR was associated with an increased risk of COI and whether NLR may act as a clinically relevant predictor for COI among community-dwelling older adults could not be determined.

Abstract
Loss of the actin filament capping protein CapG has no apparent effect on the phenotype of mice maintained under sterile conditions; however, bone marrow-derived macrophages from CapG(-/-) mice exhibited distinct motility defects. We examined the ability of CapG(-/-) mice to clear two intracellular bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The 50% lethal dose of Listeria was 10-fold lower for CapG(-/-) mice than for CapG(+/+) mice (6 x 10(3) CFU for CapG(-/-) mice and 6 x 10(4) CFU for CapG(+/+) mice), while no difference was observed for Salmonella: The numbers of Listeria cells in the spleens and livers were significantly higher in CapG(-/-) mice than in CapG(+/+) mice at days 5 to 9, while the bacterial counts were identical on day 5 for Salmonella-infected mice. Microscopic analysis revealed qualitatively similar inflammatory responses in the spleens and livers of the two types of mice. Specific immunofluorescence staining analyzed by fluorescence-activated cell sorting revealed similar numbers of macrophages and dendritic cells in infected CapG(-/-) and CapG(+/+) spleens. However, analysis of bone marrow-derived macrophages revealed a 50% reduction in the rate of phagocytosis of Listeria in CapG(-/-) cells but a normal rate of phagocytosis of Salmonella: Stimulation of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor resulted in a reduction in the ruffling response of CapG(-/-) cells compared to the response of CapG(+/+) cells, and CapG(-/-) bone-marrowed derived neutrophils migrated at a mean speed that was nearly 50% lower than the mean speed of CapG(+/+) neutrophils. Our findings suggest that specific motility deficits in macrophages, dendritic cells, and neutrophils render CapG(-/-) mice more susceptible than CapG(+/+) mice to Listeria infection.

Abstract
The number of immunocompromised children in the population is increasing for a variety of reasons. Common respiratory viruses acquired in the community or in the hospital setting include the ortho- and paramyxoviruses and may cause severe lower respiratory tract disease in these children. Measles is again becoming a threat. Particularly in transplant patients, Herpes group viruses and adenoviruses, often part of a reactivation illness, can cause potentially life-threatening disease. The use of rapid molecular diagnostic techniques and an increasing array of antiviral therapies can help ensure a good outcome in many cases, although controlled clinical trial data are often lacking. Immunotherapeutic strategies using specific antibodies or cytotoxic T cells are being developed and are likely to have an increasing role in prophylaxis and pre-emptive therapy in the future. The development and introduction of vaccines against common respiratory diseases will help reduce the risks faced by these susceptible children.

Abstract
During an 8-year period of observation, defects of immune responses were characterized and monitored in 40 of 50 Polish children with Nijmegen breakage syndrome referred to the Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw. The following parameters were determined at diagnosis: (1) concentrations of serum IgM, IgG, IgA; (2) concentrations of IgG subclasses; and (3) lymphocyte subpopulations. In addition, naturally acquired specific antibodies against Streptococcus pneumoniae were determined in 20 patients with a history of recurrent respiratory infections. During follow-up, total serum immunoglobulins and IgG subclasses were monitored systematically in 17 patients who did not receive immunomodulatory therapy. Moreover, anti-HBs antibody response was measured after vaccination of 20 children against HBV. We found that the immune deficiency in NBS is profound, highly variable, with a tendency to progress over time. Systematic monitoring of the humoral response, despite good clinical condition, is essential for early medical intervention.

Abstract
The T cell as a bridge between innate and adaptive immune systems: Implications for the kidney. The immune system is classically divided into innate and adaptive components with distinct roles and functions. T cells are major components of the adaptive immune system. T cells are firmly established to mediate various immune-mediated kidney diseases and are current targets for therapy. Ischemic acute renal failure, a major cause of native kidney and allograft dysfunction, is mediated in part by inflammatory components of the innate immune system. However, recent data from experimental models in kidney as well as liver, intestine, brain and heart implicate T cells as important mediators of ischemia reperfusion injury. These data reveal new insights into the pathogenesis of ischemic acute renal failure, as well as identify novel and feasible therapeutic approaches. Furthermore, the identification of T cells as a mediator of early alloantigen-independent tissue injury demonstrates that the functional capacity of T cells spreads beyond adaptive immunity into the realm of the innate immune response.

Abstract
We retrospectively reviewed the clinicopathologic features and immunohistochemical profiles of 7 patients with Rasmussen encephalitis (age range, 3.5-15 years at surgery). All had medically intractable seizures (6 months' to 7 years' duration); all but 1 developed unilateral hemiparesis. Histologically, all cases were characterized by leptomeningeal and parenchymal perivascular chronic inflammation consisting primarily of T lymphocytes (CD3+, CD5+, CD7+). In all but 1 case, a predominance of CD8+ T-cytotoxic/suppressor lymphoid cells over CD4+ cells was observed. All cases had rare B lymphocytes (CD79a+, CD20+). Rare CD10+ and no CD56+ cells were noted. All cases were marked by diffuse proliferation of microglial cells, highlighted on CD68 immunostaining. Focal microglial nodule formations were observed in 4 cases and focal cortical atrophy in 5 cases. Viral inclusions were not noted. There was no evidence of Epstein-Barr virus by LMP-1 antibody immunostaining. The histologic findings of Rasmussen encephalitis resemble those of viral meningoencephalitis. The pathologicfindings may be only focally present, and missed, if diagnosis is made or confirmed with biopsy alone. Most lymphoid cells have a T-cell immunophenotype, with a predominance of CD8+ cells in most cases.
