Abstract
Undoubtedly, the food intake process is one of the most necessary physiological functions for the survival of animals and humans. Although; this operation seems simple on the surface, the regulation of the mechanisms involved in it requires the cooperation of many neurotransmitters, peptides, and hormonal factors in the nervous and endocrine systems. Understanding the signals that regulate energy levels and appetite, may open new approaches to therapeutics and drugs used in obesity-related complications. Improving the quality of animal products and health is also possible due to this research. The present review is aimed to sum up the current findings on central effects of opioids on the food consumption of birds and mammals. Based on the reviewed articles, the opioidergic system appears to be one of the key elements in the birds' and mammals' food intake and is closely related to other systems involved in appetite regulation. According to the findings, it seems that the effects of this system on nutritional mechanisms are often applied via kappa- and mu-opioid receptors. Controversial observations have been made regarding opioid receptors, highlighting the need for further studies, especially at the molecular level. The role of opiates in taste or diet craving also showed the efficacy of this system, especially the mu-opioid receptor, on preferences such as diets containing high sugar and fat. Finally, putting the results of this study together with the findings of human experiments and other primates can lead to a correct comprehension of the appetite regulation processes, especially the role of the opioidergic system.

Abstract
Social interactions can be and often are rewarding. The effect of social contact strongly depends on circumstances, and the reward may be driven by varied motivational processes, ranging from parental or affiliative behaviors to investigation or aggression. Reward associated with nonreproductive interactions in rodents is measured using the social conditioned place preference (sCPP) paradigm, where a change in preference for an initially neutral context confirms reinforcing effects of social contact. Here, we revised the sCPP method and reexamined social reward in adult female mice. Contrary to earlier studies, we found that robust rewarding effects of social contact could be detected in adult (14-week-old) female C57BL/6 mice when the sCPP task was refined to remove confounding factors. Strikingly, the rewarding effects of social interaction were only observed among female siblings who remained together from birth. Contact with same-age nonsiblings was not rewarding even after 8 weeks of cohousing. Other factors critical for the social reward effect in the sCPP paradigm included the number of conditioning sessions and the inherent preference for contextual cues. Thus, we show that social interaction is rewarding in adult female mice, but this effect strictly depends on the familiarity of the interaction partners. Furthermore, by identifying confounding factors, we provide a behavioral model to study the mechanisms underlying the rewarding effects of nonreproductive social interaction in adult mice.

Abstract
Cognitive processes like the formation of social memories can shape the nature of social interactions between conspecifics. Male songbirds use vocal signals during courtship interactions with females, but the degree to which social memory and familiarity influences the likelihood and structure of male courtship song remains largely unknown. Using a habituation-dishabituation paradigm, we found that a single, brief (<30 s) exposure to a female led to the formation of a short-term memory for that female: adult male Bengalese finches were significantly less likely to produce courtship song to an individual female when re-exposed to her 5 min later (i.e., habituation). Familiarity also rapidly decreased the duration of courtship songs but did not affect other measures of song performance (e.g., song tempo and the stereotypy of syllable structure and sequencing). Consistent with a contribution of social memory to the decrease in courtship song with repeated exposures to the same female, the likelihood that male Bengalese finches produced courtship song increased when they were exposed to a different female (i.e., dishabituation). Three consecutive exposures to individual females also led to the formation of a longer-term memory that persisted over days. Specifically, when courtship song production was assessed 2 days after initial exposures to females, males produced fewer and shorter courtship songs to familiar females than to unfamiliar females. Measures of song performance, however, were not different between courtship songs produced to familiar and unfamiliar females. The formation of a longer-term memory for individual females seemed to require at least three exposures because males did not differentially produce courtship song to unfamiliar females and females that they had been exposed to only once or twice. Taken together, these data indicate that brief exposures to individual females led to the rapid formation and persistence of social memories and support the existence of distinct mechanisms underlying the motivation to produce and the performance of courtship song.

Abstract
Pain elicits behaviors in humans and nonhuman animals that serve as social cues. Pain behaviors serve a communicative function in humans, and this may be true as well in other animals. This review considers the current evidence for modulation of acute pain in different social contexts in humans and rodents, with a focus on dyadic social interactions. Increasing data supports the ability of social buffering, emotional contagion (a form of empathy), vicarious learning, and social stress to modulate pain sensitivity and pain behavior in mice and rats. As in humans, many of these social factors operate, and affect pain, in a sex-dependent manner. The development of a true social neuroscience of pain, with detailed explication of the underlying neurochemistry and genetics, now seems achievable.

Abstract
RATIONALE The opioid system is involved in the regulation of several behavioral and physiological responses, controlling pain, reward, and addictive behaviors. Opioid administration, depending on drugs and doses, usually affects sociability reducing interactions between conspecifics, whereas some affiliative behaviors such as sexual activity, social grooming, and play behavior increase the endogenous opioid activity. OBJECTIVES The possible interaction between endogenous opioids released during socio/sexual behavior and their analgesic effect on pain response is reviewed in the rodent literature. RESULTS Direct evidence for socially mediated opioid changes resulting in increase in nociceptive threshold derives from studies exploring the effects of defeat experiences, social isolation, maternal, sexual behavior, and social reunion among kin or familiar animals in laboratory rodents. Indirect evidence for endogenous activation of the opioid system, possibly affecting pain sensitivity, derives from studies investigating the relevance of natural social reward using the conditioned place preference protocols or analyzing ultrasonic vocalizations associated to positive affective contexts. Finally, genetic and epigenetic factors that affect the opioid system during development are reported to be involved in modulating the response to social stimuli as well as nociception. CONCLUSIONS All studies highlight the relevance of affiliative contact behavior between conspecifics that is responsible for the activation of the endogenous mu-opioid system, inducing nociceptive threshold increase.

Abstract
The present experiments clarify sexual and social relationship factors related to the development of defensive burying behavior in rats. Rats were raised in isolation, or in a variety of pairs differing in sex, age or familiarity during the juvenile and post-juvenile period. In Experiment 1, decreased burying behavior was found in both male and female rats during the juvenile stage when they were reared in isolation, or with an adult female, or for males reared with a same-age female. In Experiment 2, female rats isolated during the juvenile stage who were reared after the juvenile stage with a same-sex, non-isolated rat, showed as much burying behavior as rats reared with a littermate; this was not found for male rats. When both male and female rats isolated during the juvenile stage were reared with each other after isolation, they maintained reduced burying behavior in adulthood. These sex differences in the effect of different social groupings are likely due to the differences in social relationships during the juvenile and after puberty, when social dominance relationships emerge in male rats. In Experiment 3, the effects of social dominance relationships on burying behavior were investigated in male rats. Subordination increased the freezing tendency as a passive defense, while social tension accompanied with rearing with an adult male produced decreased burying behavior as a proactive defense. These findings suggest that affiliative relationships involving playful contacts activate and maintain burying behavior, but familiarity is not a significant factor, while dominance relationships modulate the patterns of burying behavior.

Abstract
Deficits in social interaction are primary characteristics of autism, which has strong genetic components. Genetically manipulated mouse models may provide a useful research tool to advance the investigation of genes associated with autism. To identify these genes using mouse models, behavioral assays for social relationships in the background strains must be developed. The present study examined colony formation in groups of one male and three female mice (Experiment 1) and, groups of three male mice (Experiment 2) of the C57BL/6J strain in a semi-natural visible burrow system. For adult mixed-sex colonies, 4-h observations during both the dark and light cycles for 15 days demonstrated day-dependent increases in huddling together in the chamber accompanied by decreased frequencies of active social behaviors. Sequential analyses of social interactions indicated that approaches to the back of the approached animal typically elicited flight, while approaches to the front of the approached animal failed to do so. This was seen for female to female, and for female to male approaches, as well as male to female approaches, strongly counterindicating a view that rear approach/flight specifically reflects female responsivirity to unwanted male sexual approach. For adult male colonies, similar protocols found that these social behaviors were similar to those of adult mixed-sex colonies. These findings suggest two potentially useful measures of eusocial behavior in mice, of possible value for genetic mouse models of autism; that is, huddling together and approaches to the front but not the back, of conspecifics.

Abstract
Communication is essential to members of a society not only for the expression of personal information, but also for the protection from environmental threats. Highly social mammals have a distinct characteristic: when conspecific animals are together, they show a better recovery from experiences of distress. This phenomenon, termed 'social buffering', has been found in rodents, birds, non-human primates and also in humans. This paper reviews classical findings on social buffering and focuses, in particular, on social buffering effects in relation to neuroendocrine stress responses. The social cues that transmit social buffering signals, the neural mechanisms of social buffering and a partner's efficacy with respect to social buffering are also detailed. Social contact appears to have a very positive influence on the psychological and the physiological aspects of social animals, including human beings. Research leading towards further understanding of the mechanisms of social buffering could provide alternative medical treatments based on the natural, individual characteristics of social animals, which could improve the quality of life.

Abstract
The present study was designed to examine the effect of specific opioid agonists on feeding behavior in neonatal chicks. The food intake of broiler chicks was significantly decreased by intracerebroventricular injection of DAMGO and beta-casomorphin, micro-opioid receptor agonists, at 30-min postinjection. In contrast, both delta-opioid receptor agonists (DADLE and DPDPE) stimulated the food intake of the chick. Similar to the delta-opioid receptor agonists, food intake was elevated by the kappa-opioid receptor agonist (U-50488H and U-62066) in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that the endogenous opioid peptides have an important role for feeding behavior in the central nervous system of chicks.

Abstract
Ultrasonic vocalization (UV) as a measure of social memory was investigated in female mice. UVs emitted by a resident female in the presence of a same-sex partner were measured during a 3-min, pretest social interaction. In a second 3-min test session, mice were reexposed to the familiar partner or presented with a novel partner. In the first case, there was a decline in UVs emitted by resident mice when the intervals between the 2 sessions were 15, 30, or 60 min. After 24 hr, this effect disappeared. In contrast, with a novel female partner, the number of UVs remained unchanged. Scopolamine (0.05 mg/kg ip) disrupted this memory process: Drug-treated females did not show the expected decrease in UVs when reexposed to the familiar female after 30 min. This study provides behavioral and pharmacological evidence that ultrasonic calls can be used as a measure of social memory in female mice.

Abstract
Mice (Mus musculus domesticus) were raised (Postnatal Day 15 to 25) in single- or mixed-sex litters and precociously (Day 15) or regularly (Day 25) weaned. When they were faced as adults with a basic social choice--between two stimulus mice raised in litters of different sex composition but both of the same sex as the chooser--mice raised in mixed-sex litters were preferred. In the sociosexual choice-between a male and a female, both from the single- or the mixed-sex group--the opposite-sex preference was expressed. Both these preferences were abolished by the sexual segregation of the choosers. This variable hardly affected potential mate choice--between two stimulus mice both of the opposite sex of the chooser but raised in litters of different sex composition. Data indicate that socially mediated behavioral plasticity has a major role in the early shaping of adult individual differences both in attractive stimulus properties and in sociosexual preferences.
