Albumin enhances sleep in the young rat

Associations between immune biomarkers and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and insomnia in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease: A preliminary longitudinal analysis

Innate immunity may influence the onset of affective symptoms and alter sleep patterns in chronic inflammatory conditions. Here, we tested the prospective associations between baseline serum C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin, and CRP/albumin ratio (CAR, i.e., an emerging biomarker of disease activity), and self-reported symptoms of anxiety, depression, and insomnia at 1-year follow up in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease (n = 17). After controlling for baseline values, CAR (ρ = 0.591, p = 0.026) predicted anxiety symptoms, while albumin predicted both anxiety (ρ = -0.687, p = 0.007) and insomnia symptoms (ρ = -0.648, p = 0.012). Current findings preliminarily suggest that inflammation may influence anxiety and sleep disturbance in paediatric IBD.

Research on the correlation of immunity in patients with chronic insomnia

PURPOSE

To investigate the changes in immunity and clinical infection events among patients with chronic insomnia.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty-two patients with chronic insomnia (age = 64.44 ± 10.53) and 47 normal controls (age = 67.08 ± 7.822) were selected to determine differences in data, such as complete blood counts (CBCs), biochemical indices, lymphocyte subsets, immunoglobulin (Ig), complement C3 and C4 and interleukin-6 (IL-6), as well as to compare the incidence of clinical infection between the two groups.

RESULTS

There were significant differences in erythrocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit, albumin, globulin, creatinine, IgG, IgG/IgM ratio, CD4⁺ T-lymphocytes, CD19-lymphocytes, CD4⁺/CD8⁺ ratio, platelet/lymphocyte ratio, CD19/CD3 ratio, and clinical infection events between the chronic insomnia group and the control group (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and platelet counts; lymphocyte subsets CD8⁺ T and CD56⁺; platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR); neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR); complement C3; complement C4; IgM; IgA; and IL-6 between the experimental group and their controls (p > 0.05). The systolic and diastolic blood pressures of the chronic insomnia group did not vary widely from those of the controls (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Patients with chronic insomnia have immunological abnormalities, characterized by a higher incidence of clinical infection.

Daytime sleepiness and quality of life in peritoneal dialysis patients

We aimed to compare automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) therapy with regard to patients' excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and quality of life (QOL). EDS was assessed with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and QOL with the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form (SF-36) health survey. We included 59 patients (CAPD/APD, 30/29; male/female, 33/26; age, 45.3±15.8 years; dialysis duration, 42.0±33.6 months). The CAPD and APD groups were similar with respect to factors that affected sleep quality (age, sex, duration of PD), smoking, alcohol intake, socioeconomic status, body mass index, comorbid disease, and various laboratory parameters. Although one patient (3.3%) treated with CAPD and four patients (13.8%) treated with APD experienced EDS, there was no significant differences in ESS scores between the CAPD and APD patients. There was no difference in the SF-36 total and subscale scores when APD patients were compared with CAPD patients. The independent predictors of ESS were the serum albumin level (β= -2.04, P<0.01), total SF-36 score (β= 0.08, P=0.02), social functioning score (β= -2.47, P=0.01), and role-emotional subscale score (β= -1.12, P=0.05). The incidence of EDS was slightly higher in APD patients, but it did not negatively affect daily activities or QOL.

Nutritional effects on sleep

The purpose of this study was to examine the nutritional effects on sleep using actigraphy measures. A repeated-measures, counterbalanced, crossover study design was used to administer treatment diets to 44 adult participants. Participants served as their own control and consumed high-protein, high-fat, high-carbohydrate, and control diets. The study participants wore Motionlogger Actigraph sleep watches while consuming weighed food intakes for 4 days over four different treatment periods. Demographic and laboratory data were also analyzed. Actigraph results showed that the wake episodes and sleep latencies were significantly different when comparing the macronutrient intakes of the participants. Post hoc test results showed that high-protein diets were associated with significantly fewer (p = .03) wake episodes and high-carbohydrate diets were associated with significantly shorter (p < .01) sleep latencies than control diets. Thus, consumption of specific macronutrient intakes may have a significant influence on sleep.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor enhances spontaneous sleep in rats and rabbits

Various growth factors are involved in sleep regulation. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) belongs to the neurotrophin family; it and its receptors are found in normal brain. Furthermore, cerebral cortical levels of BDNF mRNA have a diurnal variation and increase after sleep deprivation. Therefore, we investigated whether BDNF would promote sleep. Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats (320-380 g) and 25 male New Zealand White rabbits (4.5-5.5 kg) were surgically implanted with electroencephalographic (EEG) electrodes, a brain thermistor, and a lateral intracerebroventricular cannula. The animals were injected intracerebroventricularly with pyrogen-free saline and, on a separate day, one of the following doses of BDNF: 25 or 250 ng in rabbits; 10, 50, or 250 ng in rats. The EEG, brain temperature, and motor activity were recorded for 23 h after the intracerebroventricular injections. BDNF increased time spent in non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) in rats and rabbits and REMS in rabbits. Current results provide further evidence that various growth factors are involved in sleep regulation.
