Polymers (Basel) 2019; 11:polym11122012. Abstract
In this work, the optimum filler loading to prepare epoxy/organoclay nanocomposites by the in-situ polymerization method was studied. Bi-functionalized montmorillonite at different filler loading (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 wt %) was dispersed in epoxy resin by using a high shear speed homogenizer. The effect on morphology, thermal, dynamic mechanical, and tensile properties of the epoxy/organoclay nanocomposites were studied in this work. Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) studies revealed that possible intercalated structures were obtained in epoxy/organoclay nanocomposites. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that epoxy/organoclay nanocomposites exhibit higher thermal stability at the maximum and final decomposition temperature, as well as higher char content, compared to pristine epoxy. The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) indicate that storage modulus (E′), loss modulus (E″), cross-link density and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the nanocomposites were improved with organoclay loading up to 1 wt %. Beyond this loading limit, the deterioration of properties was observed. A similar trend was also observed on tensile strength and modulus. We concluded from this study that organoclay loading up to 1 wt % is suitable for further study to fabricate hybrid nanocomposites for various applications.

Abstract
It has been reported that the introduction of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) can enhance the crystallization and orientation of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix and thus improve the mechanical properties of HDPE/RGO nanocomposites. In this study, the local microstructures and orientations in different regions of HDPE/RGO bars with varied RGO contents were further explored by two-dimensional small-angle X-ray scattering using a microbeam technique. It is unveiled that the orientation orderings of each position is intensified with increasing RGO amount, and of particular interest is the observation of the slight change of the ordering degrees in diverse zones of HDPE/RGO nanocomposite bars, indicating that RGO imposes a uniform enhancing effect upon HDPE matrix within different areas and consequently induces an effective increase of the mechanical properties of HDPE/RGO nanocomposites.

Abstract
Thin films (5-500 nm thick) of the linear aliphatic polyester (3,7) poly(propylene azelate) (PPAz) were prepared by spin-coating of CHCl(3) polymer solutions with different polymer concentrations. The morphology and structure of the spin-coated thin films were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and by grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) techniques. AFM revealed the continuous nature of the flat, spherulitic films which are stable against dewetting even for polymer coatings as thin as 15 nm. GIWAXS patterns revealed a high crystal orientation of the films. A sharp reflection on the meridian whose spacing is related to the polymer chain unit length (c-axis) supports the presence of flat-on lamellae morphology in the whole range of film thicknesses investigated. The flat-on lamellae morphology is also supported by AFM images. A triclinic unit cell with the c*-axis perpendicular to the substrate is proposed for PPAz. The repulsion of the long aliphatic spacer by the Si-substrate is invoked as the main reason for the flat-on morphology observed.
