Abstract
Carbazoles are widely exploited for their interesting photophysical and electronic properties, however bay (4,5-) functionalization is challenging, and previously inaccessible through carbazole C-H activation. We report a simple methodology which introduces a range of versatile 4,5-functionality, enabling the wider investigation of ring annulation and close proximity effects on carbazole properties.

Abstract
A series of previously unknown 2,4,5-tri- and 2,4,5,7-tetrasubstituted 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalenes and their salts with HBF4 containing bulky spherically shaped substituents (Me, Br, and SiMe3) in the naphthalene ring has been synthesized. Using XRD analysis of 11 samples, the influence of the so-called "buttressing" and "clothespin" effects on their molecular structure and the NHN hydrogen bond geometry in the solid cations were investigated. The combined action of both effects has been shown to significantly increase the compression of the hydrogen bond. As a result, the previous record of the hydrogen bond shortness (N···N = 2.524 Å) has been surpassed in favor of 2.502 Å found for the tetrafluoroborate of 2,4,5,7-tetramethyl-1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene. The molecular structure of the latter differs by perfect symmetry and practically barrier-free proton transfer in the [NHN]+ bond. On the basis of the results of quantum-chemical calculations, it is suggested that the value of 2.502 Å likely represents or lies very close to the theoretical limit for the short hydrogen bonds between the amine-type nitrogen atoms.

Abstract
Chemical synthesis based on the skeletal variation has been prolifically utilized as an attractive approach for modification of molecular properties. Given the ubiquity of unstrained cyclic amines, the ability to directly alter such motifs would grant an efficient platform to access unique chemical space. Here, we report a highly efficient and practical strategy that enables the selective ring-opening functionalization of unstrained cyclic amines. The use of difluorocarbene leads to a wide variety of multifaceted acyclic architectures, which can be further diversified to a range of distinctive homologative cyclic scaffolds. The virtue of this deconstructive strategy is demonstrated by successful modification of several natural products and pharmaceutical analogues.

Abstract
Five new geminal aminocycloalkanephosphonic acids (4 - 8) containing both an aromatic ring and a cycloalkane ring were synthesized and evaluated as potential inhibitors of buckwheat phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL). Within the set of compounds which are related to 2-aminoindane-2-phosphonic acid (AIP, 3), a known powerful inhibitor of PAL, racemic 1-aminobenzocyclobutene-1-phosphonic acid (4), was six times weaker than AIP as an in vitro inhibitor of buckwheat PAL, but six times stronger than AIP as an in vivo inhibitor of phenylalanine-derived anthocyanin synthesis in buckwheat.
