Abstract
Copper guanidine quinolinyl complexes act as good entatic state models due to their distorted structures leading to a high similarity between Cu(i) and Cu(ii) complexes. For a better understanding of the entatic state principle regarding electron transfer a series of guanidine quinolinyl ligands with different substituents in the 2- and 4-position were synthesized to examine the influence on the electron transfer properties of the corresponding copper complexes. Substituents with different steric or electronic influences were chosen. The effects on the properties of the copper complexes were studied applying different experimental and theoretical methods. The molecular structures of the bis(chelate) copper complexes were examined in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and in solution by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealing a significant impact of the substituents on the complex structures. For a better insight natural bond orbital (NBO) calculations of the ligands and copper complexes were performed. The electron transfer was analysed by the determination of the electron self-exchange rates following Marcus theory. The obtained results were correlated with the results of the structural analysis of the complexes and of the NBO calculations. Nelsen's four-point method calculations give a deeper understanding of the thermodynamic properties of the electron transfer. These studies reveal a significant impact of the substituents on the properties of the copper complexes.

Abstract
With the increased attention to processing heavy crude oils, a detailed description of chemical composition is critical for the petroleum refining industry. The current analytical technique such as ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry has been successfully applied for the molecular level characterization of complex petroleum fractions. But the structural characterization of heavy petroleum feedstock is still a great challenge. In this study, a novel in-depth characterization method of nitrogen heterocycles (N-heterocycles) in heavy petroleum mixtures was proposed by online liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization high resolution energy-resolved mass spectrometry. A series of typical basic aromatic, neutral aromatic and naphtheno-aromatic nitrogen heterocyclic model compounds were synthesized to investigate energy-resolved fragmentation behaviors in high energy collision-induced dissociation at 10-100 eV. Energy-dependent fragmentation pathways were elucidated. Notably, characteristic double bond equivalent (DBE) versus carbon number distributions of N1 ions and all CH ions were discovered, which were closely related to their core structure. Then a workflow to assign core structures of alkyl-substituted N-heterocycles in petroleum was proposed and validated. The developed method was applied to investigate the structural isomers in feed and product vacuum gas oil (VGO) fractions. Core structural differences in feed VGO and subtle structural variations between feed and product VGOs were recognized. This work can distinguish structural isomers of N-heterocycles with the subtle difference in their core structure in heavy petroleum fractions based on global energy dimensional fragmentation characteristics.

Abstract
A room-temperature C-H bond functionalization of benzamides has been developed by merging a photocatalyst with a cobalt catalyst for the synthesis of isoindolone spirosuccinimides. The reaction proceeds in aerobic conditions and does not require any sacrificial external oxidants such as Ag(I) or Mn(III) salts. Visible light activates the photocatalyst, and it acts as an electron-transfer reagent and helps in the fundamental organometallic steps by modulating the oxidation state of the cobalt complex. This C-H bond functionalization and spirocyclization showed wide substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. A possible reaction mechanism was proposed from the experimental outcome, showing that C-H bond activation is irreversible and not the rate-determining step.

Abstract
An investigation on the effect of substituent at the 2-position of mono-substituted quinoxalines in the synthesis of di-substituted quinoxaline derivatives via nucleophilic substitution reactions, is reported. Di-substituted quinoxalines bearing aryl-alky, aryl-aryl, aryl-heteroaryl, aryl-alkynyl, and amino-alkyl substituents were prepared in moderate to good yields. 2-Monosubstituted quinoxalines bearing a phenyl and butyl substituent reacted readily with alkyl-, aryl-, heteroaryl- and alkynyl- nucluephiles, giving di-substituted quinoxalines. 2-Monosubstituted quinoxalines bearing an amine and alkynyl substituent only reacted with alkyl nucleophiles. Oxidative rearomatization to give 2,3-disubstituted quinoxaline products occurred in atmospheric O2.

Abstract
A transition-metal-free protocol for the redox-neutral light-induced decarboxylative coupling of carboxylic acids with (hetero)aromatic nitriles at ambient temperature is presented. A broad scope of acids and nitriles is accepted, and alcohols can be coupled in a similar fashion through their oxalate half esters. Various inexpensive sources of UV light and even sunlight can be used to achieve this C-C bond formation proceeding through a free radical mechanism.

Abstract
Infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and invasive mycoses, represent serious health problems. As a part of our long-term efforts to find new agents for the treatment of these diseases, a new series of pyrazine analogs of chalcones bearing an isopropyl group in position 5 of the pyrazine ring was prepared. The structures of the compounds were corroborated by IR and NMR spectroscopy and their purity confirmed by elemental analysis. The susceptibility of eight fungal strains to the studied compounds was tested. The results have been compared with the activity of some previously reported propyl derivatives. The only strain that was susceptible to the studied compounds was Trichophyton mentagrophytes. It was found that replacing a non-branched propyl with a branched isopropyl did not have a decisive and unequivocal influence on the in vitro antifungal activity against T. mentagrophytes. In vitro activity against Trichophyton mentagrophytes comparable with that of fluconazole was exhibited by nitro-substituted derivatives. Unfortunately, no compound exhibited efficacy comparable with that of terbinafine, which is the most widely used agent for treating mycoses caused by dermatophytes. Some of the prepared compounds were assayed for antimycobacterial activity against M. tuberculosis H37Rv. The highest potency was also displayed by nitro-substituted compounds. The results of the present study are in a good agreement with our previous findings and confirm the positive influence of electron-withdrawing groups on the B-ring of chalcones on the antifungal and antimycobacterial activity of these compounds.
