Abstract
Several sterically protected, low-coordinate organophosphorus compounds with P=P, P=C, and C≡P bond are described in this study. Molecules such as diphosphenes, phosphaalkenes, 1-phosphaallenes, 1,3-diphosphaallenes, 3,4-diphosphinidenecyclobutenes, and phosphaalkynes are stabilized with an extremely bulky 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl (Mes*) group. The synthesis, structures, physical, and chemical properties of these molecules are discussed, together with some successful applications in catalytic organic reactions.

Abstract
A new series of compounds formed in a one-step reaction (Phospha–Wittig or phospha–Peterson), containing the CP–P moiety was synthesized and characterized. These species are stable under atmospheric conditions and are resistant to hydrolysis.

Abstract
Treatment of Mes*P=C(Si(CH3)3)Br with CH2=CHMgBr in the presence of Pd(0) affords 1-phosphabutadiene Mes*P=C(Si(CH3)3)–CH=CH2 (1) selectively as the Z isomer. Remarkably, treatment of Z-1 with n-BuLi (0.1 equiv.) resulted in quantitative formation of E-1. The exact role of the n-BuLi is unknown; however, it appears to be required to promote the isomerization in the absence of light. The isomerization of Z-1 to E-1 was also mediated by sunlight with the reaction mixture consisting of a ca. 1:9 ratio of Z-1 to E-1. DFT calculations were consistent with the thermodynamic favorability of the isomerization of Z-1 to E-1.

Abstract
Reactions of Ph3GePCO with KP(t-Bu)2 and Ph3SiCl, or direct reaction with Ph3SiP(t-Bu)2 provides the (Z)- and (E)-isomers of the phosphaalkene (t-Bu2)PC(OSiPh3)P(GePh3) 2, respectively. These isomers interconvert thermally and photochemically, while 2 also undergoes silyl and phosphide exchange with silylphosphines, consistent with a mechanism involving the reversible silylphosphination of Ph3GePCO.

Abstract
Abstract
Utilizing 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl as a sterically demanding group (abbreviated as Mes*), we have been successful in isolation, characterization, physical and chemical property investigation of low-coordinate organophosphorus compounds such as those carrying P=P and P=C bonds. Diphosphene, 1-phosphaethene, 1,3-diphosphaallene, 1-phosphaallene, and 3,4-diphosphinidenecyclobutenes are discussed in terms of stereochemistry including E/Z isomerization around P=P or P=C bond and R/S resolution of rotational isomers around crowded P–C bonds with chiral HPLC column. (π-Allyl)palladium complexes ligated with 3,4-diphosphinidenecyclobutene are useful in such catalytic organic reactions as the Tsuji-Trost reaction by which from a chiral s-alcohol, the corresponding chiral amine is obtained with retention of chirality suggesting double inversion process.

Abstract
AbstractThe character of bis(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)diphosphene is described experimentally and theoretically. The diphosphene is stabilized by steric protection and the structure can be characterized by spectroscopic as well as crystallographic analyses. Theoretical calculation on the diphosphene strongly suggests that the P=P bond is an isolated double bond and that the P–C bonds are single covalent bond. The reactivity has been investigated including photolysis, oxidation, sulfurization, selenation, transition-metal complex formation, and carbene addition. Plausible mechanistic scheme for the reaction of the diphosphene with 3,4,5,6-tetrachlorocyclohexa-3,5-diene-1,2-dione (or tetrachloro-o-benzoquinone) to a pentavalent spiro product is discussed based on the product analysis.

Abstract
Phosphaalkenes (MesP=CRR': R = R' = Ph (1a); R = R' = 4-FC6H4 (1b); R = Ph, R' = 4-FC6H4 (1c); R = R' = 4-OMeC6H4 (1d); R = Ph, R' = 4-OMeC6H4 (1e); R = Ph, R' = 2-pyridyl (1f)) are prepared from the reaction of MesP(SiMe3)2 and O=CRR' in the presence of a trace of KOH or NaOH. The base-catalyzed phospha-Peterson reaction is quantitated by NMR spectroscopy, and isolated yields of phosphaalkene between 40 and 70% are obtained after vacuum distillation and/or recrystallization. The asymmetrically substituted phosphaalkenes (1c, 1e, 1f) form as 1:1 mixtures of E and Z isomers; however, X-ray crystallography reveals that the E isomers crystallize preferentially. Interestingly, E-1e and E-1f readily isomerize in solution in the dark, although the rate of isomerization is much faster when samples are exposed to light. X-ray crystal structures of 1b, E-1e, and E-1f reveal that the P=C bond lengths (average of 1.70 A) are in the long end of the range typically found in phosphaalkenes (1.61-1.71 A). Attempts to prepare isolable P-adamantyl phosphaalkenes following this route were unsuccessful. Although AdP=CPh2 (2a) is detected by 31P NMR spectroscopy, attempts to isolate this species afforded the 1,2-diphosphetane (AdPCPh2)2 (3a), which was characterized by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
A series of phosphaalkenes, E-ArP=C(H)Ar' (Ar = 2,6-Mes2C6H3, Ar' = Ph (1a); Ar = 2,6-Mes2C6H3, Ar' = p-C6H4Br (2a); Ar = 4-Br-2,6-Mes2C6H2, Ar' = Ph (3a); Ar = 4-Br-2,6-Mes2C6H2, Ar' = p-C6H4Br (4a)) have been prepared by phospha-Wittig reactions and characterized. Exposure of these materials either to room light over an extended period of time (days) or to UV light (hours) produced equilibrium mixtures of the E and Z isomers (1b-4b) as indicated by 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy. The structures of compounds 4a and 4b were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Variable-temperature (1)H NMR studies of 4b indicate hindered rotation about the P-CAr bond, with DeltaH(double dagger) = 13.8 kcal/mol and DeltaS(double dagger) = 1.3 eu. The electronic structures of E- and Z-PhP=C(H)Ph have been examined using density functional theory.

Abstract
The syntheses, characterizations, and X-ray crystallographic structure determinations are described for adducts of stable nucleophilic carbenes with pnictinidenes. The adducts between 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene and phenylphosphinidene, phenylarsinidene, (trifluoromethyl)phosphinidene, and (pentafluorophenyl)arsinidene are reported. These carbene-pnictinidene adducts are formed by the direct reaction of a stable nucleophilic carbene with the corresponding pnictinidene cyclic oligomers. The synthesis and structure of the adduct between 1,3-dimesitylimidazolin-2-ylidene and phenylphosphinidene from the reaction of 1,3-dimesitylimidazolin-2-ylidene with phenylphosphorus dichloride are also reported. These carbene-pnictinidene adducts possess strongly polarized pnictinidene-carbene bonds. The C-Pn-C angles are all typically small at 97-102 degrees, and there is only a 4% shortening of the nominal Pn=C double bond compared to the Pn-C single bond to the second substituent on the pnictogen. The (31)P NMR shifts of the phosphorus adducts suggest strongly shielded phosphorus centers in accord with the polarized structures.
