Abstract
An efficient, base-promoted, one-pot, metal-free, open-flask synthesis of diverse, functionally enriched benzo[b]fluoren-11-ones has been discovered, and wide applicability of this exceptionally simple protocol with green flavors has been scoped. This synthesis proceeds via an unanticipated, tandem, double-aldol condensation between in situ-generated 1-indanone dianions and o-bis-ynones to furnish benzo[b]fluoren-11-ones harboring as many as six variegated substituents on their tetracyclic framework. This methodology has also been amplified to access heterocyclic analogues 2- and 4-azabenzo[b]fluorenones of benzo[b]fluoren-11-ones and extended to mixed linear-angular annulated pentacyclic dibenzo[a,h]fluoren-13-one.

Abstract
Direct asymmetric synthesis of δ-hydroxy-β-ketoesters was accomplished via regio- and enantioselective aldol reactions of β-ketoesters with isatins catalyzed by cinchona alkaloid thiourea derivatives. The C-C bond formation of the reactions occurred only at the γ-position of the β-ketoesters. Reaction progress monitoring and product stability analyses under the conditions that included the catalyst indicated that the γ-position reaction products were formed kinetically. Various δ-hydroxy-β-ketoesters bearing 3-alkyl-3-hydroxyoxindole cores relevant to the development of bioactive molecules were synthesized.

Abstract
The enolate monoanion of amino esters is explored, and the first catalytic Michael addition of α-amino esters is demonstrated. These studies indicate that the acidity of the αC-H is the primary factor determining reactivity. Thus, polyfluorophenylglycine amino esters yield novel α-amino esters in the presence of a catalytic amount of a guanidine-derived base and Michael acceptors. Reactivity requires an acidic N-H, which is accomplished using common protecting groups such as N-Bz, N-Boc, and N-Cbz. Calculations and labeling experiments provide insight into the governing principles in which a key C-to-N proton transfer occurs, resulting in an expansion of the scope to include a number of natural amino esters. The study culminates with a late-stage functionalization of peptidic γ-secretase inhibitor, DAPT.

Abstract
A highly practical and step-economic α,β-dehydrogenation of carboxylic acids via enediolates is reported through the use of allyl-palladium catalysis. Dianions underwent smooth dehydrogenation when generated using Zn(TMP)2 ⋅2 LiCl as a base in the presence of excess ZnCl2 , thus avoiding the typical decarboxylation pathway of these substrates. Direct access to 2-enoic acids allows derivatization by numerous approaches.

Abstract

Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is
one of the most extensively investigated
conjugated polymers and has been employed as the active material in
many devices including field-effect transistors, organic photovoltaics
and sensors. As a result, methods to further tune the properties of
P3HT are desirable for specific applications. Herein, we report a
facile postpolymerization modification strategy to functionalize the
4-position of commercially available P3HT in two simple steps–bromination
of the 4-position of P3HT (Br–P3HT) followed by lithium−bromine
exchange and quenching with an electrophile. We achieved near quantitative
lithium–bromine exchange with Br–P3HT, which requires
over 100 thienyl lithiates to be present on a single polymer chain.
The lithiated-P3HT is readily combined with functional electrophiles,
resulting in P3HT derivatives with ketones, secondary alcohols, trimethylsilyl
(TMS) group, fluorine, or an azide at the 4-position. We demonstrated
that the azide-modified P3HT could undergo Cu-catalyzed or Cu-free
click chemistry, significantly expanding the complexity of the structures
that can be appended to P3HT using this method.

Abstract
A combination of X-ray crystallography, (6)Li, (15)N, and (13)C NMR spectroscopies, and density functional theory computations affords insight into the structures and reactivities of intervening aggregates underlying highly selective asymmetric alkylations of carboxylic acid dianions (enediolates) mediated by the dilithium salt of a C2-symmetric chiral tetraamine. Crystallography shows a trilithiated n-butyllithium-dilithiated amide that has dimerized to a hexalithiated form. Spectroscopic studies implicate the non-dimerized trilithiated mixed aggregate. Reaction of the dilithiated amide with the dilithium enediolate derived from phenylacetic acid affords a tetralithio aggregate comprised of the two dianions in solution and the dimerized octalithio form in the solid state. Computational studies shed light on the details of the solution structures and afford a highly predictive stereochemical model.

Abstract
Dianions of chiral nitro imines (generated by a combination of LDA and s-BuLi) underwent diastereoselective alkylation with methyl, butyl, isopropyl, allyl, and methallyl iodides. In contrast to the behavior of simple metalloenamines, the most selective auxiliary contained no coordinating groups but did possess a large steric difference between the two substituents. The yield and selectivity of the alkylations were improved by the addition of HMPA or DMPU. The use of (S)-1-naphthylethylamine as the auxiliary afforded the R absolute configuration of the alkylation products. This stereochemical outcome could be rationalized by simple steric approach controlled alkylation in a conformationally fixed, internally coordinated dianion. A SAMP nitro hydrazone gave poorer yields and selectivities.

Abstract
2-Nonen-7-ynedioic or 2-decen-8-ynedioic acid derivatives were treated with an iron reagent generated from FeCl2 and t-BuMgCl in a ratio of 1:4 to give cyclized products after hydrolysis, deuteriolysis, or the addition of carbonyl compounds. Upon reaction with the same iron reagent, 2,7-nonadienedioates afforded bicyclic ketoesters (and their enol forms) after the addition of s-BuOH or carbonyl compounds.

Abstract
A variety of 3,5-dioxopimelic acid diesters, stable 1,3,5,7-tetracarbonyl derivatives, were prepared by catalytic condensation of 1,3-bis(trimethylsilyloxy)-1,3-butadienes with methyl malonyl chloride. The keto-enol tautomerization of these compounds has been investigated by NMR spectroscopy. One keto and up to four enolic tautomers could be detected in chloroform solution and the influence of the substituents on the tautomeric equilibria has been studied.

Abstract
Diverse kinds of gem- and vic-diborylated compounds are now readily available thanks to advances in gem-diborylation of lithium carbenoids as well as vic-diborylation of carbon-carbon multiple bonds with diboron compounds. These diborylated reagents lead to invention of polyborylated reagents and many novel and useful synthetic methods for supreme stereocontrol. This review summarizes preparative methods and synthetic reactions of di- and polyborylated reagents with the emphasis on multiple bond formation.

Abstract
A variety of 1,3,5-tricarbonyl derivatives were prepared by reaction of 1,3-bis(silyl enol ethers) with acid chlorides under mild conditions. This includes reactions of both aromatic and aliphatic acid chlorides and bis(acid chlorides). The yields vary depending on the type of acid chloride employed.
