General Synthesis of meso-1,4-Dialdehydes and Their Application in Ir-Catalyzed Asymmetric Tishchenko Reactions

A practical synthesis of meso-1,4-dialdehydes based on the oxidative cleavage of cyclobutanediol derivatives using polymer-supported periodate was developed. The meso-1,4-dialdehydes were obtained in up to >99% yield and subsequently employed in Ir-catalyzed asymmetric Tishchenko reactions to give the corresponding chiral lactones, which are versatile synthetic intermediates, in good yield with moderate enantiomeric excess. The catalytically active species was identified by means of cold-spray ionization mass spectrometry and 1H NMR spectroscopy.

Bobbitt's Salt-Mediated Oxidation of Alkynyl-ols and -diols to the Corresponding Aldehydes and Their Application in Tandem Reactions

Propargyl alcohol derivatives were readily oxidized using Bobbitt's salt to yield the corresponding propynal products. 2-Butyn-1,4-diol may be selectively oxidized to provide either 4-hydroxy-2-butynal or acetylene dicarboxaldehyde, and the resulting stable dichloromethane solutions containing the chemically sensitive acetylene aldehydes were used directly in subsequent Wittig, Grignard, or Diels-Alder reactions. This method provides safe and efficient access to propynals and allows the preparation of polyfunctional acetylene compounds from readily accessible starting material without the use of protecting groups.

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C6H4Cl6O2·0.5H2O, contains one molecule of 1,1,1,6,6,6-hexachlorohex-3-yne-2,5-diol and half a water molecule located on a twofold rotation axis. In the crystal, pairs of hexachlorohexynediol molecules form centrosymmetric dimers connectedviapairwise O—H...O hydrogen bonds. These dimers are connected by water molecules, resulting in layers parallel to theabplane.

Modular Synthesis of the Pentacyclic Core of Batrachotoxin and Select Batrachotoxin Analogue Designs

Pentacyclic analogues of the potent voltage-gated sodium ion channel agonist batrachotoxin can be accessed through an intermediate furan by exploiting Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions with ring-strained dienophiles. The use of 3-bromofuran as a 1,2-dianion equivalent, the application of carbamate reductive N-alkylation for homomorpholine ring assembly, and the demonstration of CsF as an effective reagent for generating benzyne, cyclohexyne, and related dienophiles underscore this work.

How does energized NCCCCCN lose carbon in the gas phase? A joint experimental and theoretical study

Neutral NCCCCCN may be prepared in a collision cell of a VG ZAB 2HF mass spectrometer by charge stripping of (NCCCCCN)(*-), formed in the ion source by the process NCCCCH(OEt)(CN) + HO(-) --> H(2)O + NCCCC(-)(OEt)(CN) --> (NCCCCCN)(*-) + EtO(*). A comparison of the neutralization/reionization ((-)NR(+)) and charge reversal ((-)CR(+)) spectra of (NCCCCCN)(*-) indicate that some neutrals NCCCCCN are energized and rearrange to an isomer which decomposes by loss of carbon. An ab initio study at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/6-311+G(3df) level of theory indicates that (i) triplet NCCCCCN is the ground state with a T/S energy gap of -14.9 kcal mol(-1); (ii) the structures of triplet and singlet NCCCCCN need to be described by molecular obital theory, and a simple valence bond approach cannot be used for this system; and (iii) there are several possible routes by which an energized neutral may lose carbon, but the major route involves the triplet nitrile to isonitrile rearrangement NCCCCCN --> CNCCCCN --> NCCCCN + C.

A New Synthetic Approach to the Polycyclic Polyprenylated Acylphloroglucinols

[reaction: see text] The three-carbon alpha,alpha'-annulation of a sterically hindered cyclic beta-keto ester can be achieved by alkynylation with 3,3-diethoxypropyne, syn reduction of the alkyne with Co(2)(CO)(8) and Et(3)SiH, and an intramolecular aldol reaction. The method is potentially useful for the synthesis of nemorosone, hyperforin, and other polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols.

Thermal and sonochemical studies on the Diels-Alder cycloadditions of masked o-benzoquinones with furans: new insights into the reaction mechanism

What does a Diels-Alder cycloaddition look like? This question is here addressed in the case of the increasingly significant cycloadditions of masked o-benzoquinones (MOBs), which serve as versatile dienes for the construction of complex and functionalized structures. So first, what the mechanism is not: It is not (by and large) a classical, concerted [4 + 2] cycloaddition. Experimental evidence is now supported by sonochemical studies, which were instrumental in elucidating the pathway. Reactions with furans are accelerated and improved under sonication, even when conducted at -10 degrees C. Variation of the acoustic energy, temperature, and solvent composition allows us to optimize the yields and provide insights into the mechanism. Ultrasound does not cause sonochemical switching, as an alternative radical pathway should be ruled out. Results are consistent with a polar mechanism as claimed recently in a theoretical study. Moreover, this also does justice to a series of seminal papers, largely ignored, that gave a clue to the crucial issue of furan regioselectivity based on a nucleophilic addition. Most effects caused by ultrasonic agitation are of mechanochemical nature and suggest the existence of a perfectly stirred reactor with enhanced mass transfer.
