Abstract
The reaction of hydrazones with bis(π-η5:σ-η1-pentafulvene)titanium complexes leads to both hydrazonido and hydrazido complexes depending on the interaction of the hydrazone with the fulvene ligand of the metal complex. The molecular structures mostly reveal κ2N,N side-on coordination of the hydrazonido ligand due to the deprotonation of the N-H bond by one of the fulvene moieties. Instead of deprotonation, the reaction of the bis(adamantylidene fulvene)titanium complexes with cinnamon aldehyde phenylhydrazone leads to κ1N coordination. By using donating groups in the backbone of the hydrazone ligands, there are exceptions to this coordination mode due to the insertion of the C═N double bond into the Ti-Cexo bond of the pentafulvene moiety. Using 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde phenylhydrazone, a formal κ3N,N,N ligand system is formed by the coordination of the pyridine nitrogen atom to the metal center via consecutive N-H deprotonation and insertion. Finally, the use of salicylaldehyde phenylhydrazone ultimately produces a complex with the κ3N,N,O coordination mode by double deprotonation of the hydrazone N-H and O-H functions. Because of its slow conversion to the final product, the intermediate was isolated as an insertion product with consecutive O-H deprotonation, showing a κ2N,O coordination mode of the hydrazido ligand.

Abstract
A new asymmetric activation strategy for hydrazones as acyl anion equivalents is developed in the bimetallic catalyzed carbonyl-ene reaction of isatins and hydrazones. Under mild conditions, optically active functionalized 3-hydroxy-2-oxindoles were furnished in up to 98% yield with up to 97% enantioselectivity. In this process, formaldehyde tert-butylhydrazone which is seldom employed in asymmetric carbonyl-ene reactions accelerated by a metallic catalyst can be activated well by a Brønsted base. A possible catalytic cycle is proposed.

Abstract
The asymmetric 1,2-addition of formyl anion equivalents to carbonyl compounds is a powerful synthetic tool that ideally provide access to highly functionalizable α-hydroxy aldehydes in an enantioselective fashion. In this context, the nucleophilic character of formaldehyde hydrazones, together with their remarkable stability as monomeric species, has been exploited for the functionalization of diverse carbonyl compounds, using initially auxiliary-based methodologies and, more recently, catalytic enantioselective versions. This feature article highlights our research progress employing formaldehyde tert-butyl hydrazone as a versatile formyl anion equivalent, in combination with bifunctional H-bonding organocatalysis. The design and optimization of different catalytic systems, focusing on a dual activation of both reagents, is reviewed, as well as the racemization free unmasking of the formyl group and representative product transformations for the construction of valuable, densely functionalyzed chiral building blocks.

Abstract
The reactions of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde-phenylhydrazonatolithium C5H4Npy-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]Ni-NaLi(Ph) (abbreviated as Li) with a 1/2 equivalent of anhydrous metal (Zn, Sn, Fe and Co) chlorides or NiCl2(DME) (DME = 1, 2-dimethoxyethane) produced the corresponding mononuclear metal(ii) complexes ( and ), in which each ligand acts as a bidentate ligand and the coordination geometries around the metals are shown to be tetrahedral within the complexes , , and , respectively, and a tetragonal pyramid in the complex . The reaction of Li successively with sodium tert-butoxide and anhydrous ZrCl4 afforded the unanticipated bizirconium complex , in which each monoanionic ligand behaves as a tridentate bridge. Whereas treatment of Li with NiCl2 and then CH2Cl2 led to an interesting methylene-bridged bis(2-pyridyl-phenylhydrazone) compound in moderate yield; a comparative experiment showed that when the Li reacted with CH2Cl2, the coupling compound was also obtained but in very low yield. A plausible mechanism of compound formation was also proposed and supported by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
An efficient Brønsted acid assisted Lewis base catalysis protocol for the synthesis of enantiomerically pure trifluoromethylated dihydropyridazines starting from readily available hydrazones and α,β-unsaturated aldehydes has been developed. The reaction exhibits high tolerance towards many functional groups and is applicable to various aliphatic, aromatic and hetero-aromatic α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, and provides the products in good yields and with excellent enantioselectivities.

Abstract
![]()
Although
DNA binding proteins shield the genetic material from
diffusible reactive oxygen species by reacting with them, the resulting
protein (peroxyl) radicals can oxidize the bound DNA. To explore this
possible DNA damage by protein radicals, histone H4 proteins containing
an azoalkane radical precursor at defined sites were prepared. Photolysis
of a nucleosome core particle containing the modified protein produces
DNA damage that is consistent with selective C4′-oxidation.
The nucleotide(s) damaged is highly dependent on proximity to the
protein radical. These experiments provide insight into the effects
of oxidative stress on protein-bound DNA, revealing an additional
layer of complexity concerning nucleic acid damage.

Abstract
The dual activation of α-keto esters and formaldehyde tert-butyl hydrazone by BINAM-derived bis-ureas is the key to achieve high reactivity and excellent enantioselectivities in nucleophilic addition (formal carbonyl-ene reaction) to functionalized tertiary carbinols. Ensuing high-yielding diazene-to-aldehyde tranformations and subsequent derivatizations provides a direct entry to a variety of densely functionalized products.

Abstract
Donor-acceptor monosubstituted hydrazones participate as suitable reagents able to undergo an enantioselective formal diaza-ene reaction with α,β-unsaturated aldehydes under chiral secondary amine catalysis. This constitutes a new approach for the enantioselective conjugate addition of hydrazones to enals under metal-free conditions and leads to the formation of γ-hydrazono carboxylic acids after oxidation/[1,3]-H shift. The methodology is also useful for the synthesis of enantioenriched β-substituted α-keto-1,5-diesters by using the hydrazone moiety as a masked carbonyl group.
