Abstract
Monodisperse oligoethylene glycols (M-OEGs)-containing symmetrical secondary amines are highly valuable synthetic intermediates in drug development and materials sciences. Scalable three-step synthesis of M-OEGs secondary amines with flexible M-OEGs and/or alkyl chains is described herein. Through reduction amination of diethanolamine, Williamson ether synthesis, and subsequent deprotection, a series of M-OEGs secondary amines with diverse and fine-tunable chemical structures were conveniently prepared. The presented strategy is attractive with readily available starting materials, simple catalytic systems, scalable synthesis, and avoids the use of explosive sodium azide.

Abstract
An easy synthetic procedure in two or three steps from perfluoroalkylethyl iodide derivatives led to six novel fluorinated carboxylates monomeric and gemini surfactants with one or two hydrophobic tails, respectively: RF(C2H4)CH(CO2(-))2,2Na(+) and [RF(C2H4)]2C(CO2(-)),Na(+), where RF = C4F9, C6F13, and C8F17. These anionic surfactants exhibited very low surface tension from 15 to 33 mN/m as well as low critical micelle concentration until 1.3 × 10(-4) mol/L. Furthermore, the surface properties of the gemini compound with two short fluoroalkyl chains (RF = C4F9) were found to be almost equal to those of the monomeric surfactant with one long fluoroalkyl chain (RF = C8F17), which could provide an interesting alternative to the bioaccumulative long-chain perfluorinated surfactant.

Abstract
Metal complexes of tris((6-phenyl-2-pyridyl)methyl)amine (2) have hydrophobic cavities that potentially accommodate small molecules. However, the utility of this attractive motif has been hampered by the poor solubility of such complexes in many common solvents. In this study, two tripodal ligands (3, tris-[6-(3,4,5-trimethoxy-phenyl)-pyridin-2-ylmethyl]-amine, and 4, tris((6-(3,4,5-tris(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)phenyl)pyridin-2-yl)methyl)amine) derived from 2 were prepared with enhanced solubility in organic and aqueous solvents. The X-ray crystallographic analyses of selected ligands and complexes revealed that the hydrophobic cavities inside the zinc complexes were retained after derivatization. Fluorescence, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and potentiometric titration studies, which were enabled by the improved solubility, were performed to investigate the binding properties of the soluble ligands (3 and 4) with metal ions such as Zn(2+) and Cu(2+). When saturating quantities of Zn(2+) ions are added to ligand 3 in acetonitrile, the fluorescence emission maximum exhibits a pronounced red shift of approximately 80 nm (from 376 to 457 nm) and is enhanced by a factor of >100 when measured at 520 nm. The fluorescence properties of the Zn(2+) ion-coordinated ligands in the Zn(3) complex are consistent with a charge-transfer character in the excited state, with possible contributions from a planarization of the pyridyl-trimethoxyphenyl groups in the excited state, and from excitonic interactions.

Abstract
The modular synthesis of pyrimidine oligohydrazides and their peptide binding ability are reported. Ethylene glycol substituents ensure water solubility of the compounds. The pattern of hydrogen bond donors and hydrogen bond acceptors resembles the functionalities of a peptide backbone, and intramolecular hydrogen bonds restrict conformational mobility. The pyrimidine heterocycles show emission at 423 nm if either excited with light of 320 nm or by a FRET process from a nearby Trp residue. This property is useful for the luminescent detection of interactions with peptides and proteins.

Abstract
The equilibrium and dynamic surface tension properties of a partially fluorinated quaternary ammonium salt gemini surfactant 1,2-bis[dimethyl-(3-perfluoroalkyl-2-hydroxypropyl)ammonium]ethane bromide (C(n)(F)C3-2-C3C(n)F, where n represents fluorocarbon chain lengths of 4, 6, and 8) were investigated, and the effects of the fluorocarbon chain length and the number of chains on them were discussed. The plot of the logarithm of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) against the fluorocarbon chain length for C(n)(F)C3-2-C3C(n)F showed a linear decrease with an increase in chain length. On the basis of the slope of this plot, it was found that the variation in cmc with respect to the chain length is large for fluorinated gemini surfactants. The surface tension at the cmc decreased significantly; this surface tension value is lower than that of conventional fluorinated monomeric surfactants. In particular, the lowest value was 13.7 mN m(-1) for n = 8. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the kinetics of adsorption at the interface decrease with an increase in the fluorocarbon chain length and the concentration.

Abstract
Fluorosurfactants with several structural modifications have been synthesized, and the air/water interface and bulk aggregation properties investigated. The compounds were fluorinated ethylene oxide (EO) nonionics where the number and position of the hydrophilic group(s) has been radically altered to generate linear, bolaform, and Y-shaped analogues. A noticeable structure-interfacial packing relationship was observed via both tensiometric measurements and neutron reflection studies: the limiting molecular areas, a(cmc), and surface excesses, gamma(cmc), are strongly dependent on the number and position of the EO headgroups. Differing bulk aqueous properties were also observed. Small-angle neutron scattering shows an evolution of micelle structure from cylindrical to disk-like aggregates on changing from Y-shaped to bolaform molecular structure.

Abstract
The synthesis of four new analogues of motexafin gadolinium (MGd), a gadolinium(III) texaphyrin complex in clinical trials for its anticancer properties, is described. These new derivatives contain either 1,2-diaminobenzene or 2,3-diaminonaphthalene subunits as the source of the imine nitrogens and bear multiple 2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethoxy (PEG) groups, on either meso aryl or beta-pyrrolic substituents, to increase their water solubility. All four analogues were found to be more active in vitro than the parent system MGd as judged from cell proliferation assays using the PC3 and A549 cell lines.

Abstract
Novel bipodal surfactants of fluorine-containing carbamate type were synthesized with satisfactory yields from the action of fluorinated diisocyanates on oligooxyethylmonomethylated ethers without solvent. The synthetic pathways via malonic intermediates were elaborated in order to use low-price commercially available compounds such as 2-F-alkylethyl iodides and oligooxyethylmonomethylated ethers as starting materials. This new class of nonionic surfactants contains one hydrophobic part and one oleophobic part, and shows peculiar properties due to the presence of two hydrophilic parts (bipodal). All these compounds are monodisperse, i.e, include a perfectly defined number of oxyethylene units. Compared with their bipodal homologues previously described within the F-alkylated series, these new structures were easily obtained from commercial raw materials and are stable against pH media. The evaluation of their behavior at the air-water interface has been studied by measurements of surface tension versus concentration. This allows us to show clearly the variation of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) from 1.1x10(-5) to 9.8x10(-3) mol.l(-1), and of the surface area per surfactant molecule versus studied structures. The dicarbamates of oligooxyethylmonomethylether of 3-(F-alkyl)propyl so realized exhibit noteworthy properties as nonionic fluorinated surfactants. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.

Abstract
The synthesis and surface behavior of a series of nine new hydrogenated nonionic surfactants and their fluorinated analogs, derived from D-mannitol are described. Adsorption monolayers (Gibbs monolayers) were studied by surface pressure (H) measurements as a function of time. For the spread monolayers (Langmuir monolayers), the measurements of surface pressure versus molecular area (A) were performed. For the most hydrophobic amphiphiles at low concentrations, the adsorption at the air/water interface from the bulk solution required extremely long times to attain equilibrium. The A values for two compounds which could be studied in both adsorbed and spread monolayers provided data allowing a direct comparison of the properties of the two types of films formed at the air/water interface. In spite of different mechanisms of formation of Langmuir and Gibbs monolayers, their characteristic parameters were identical, proving the equivalence of these two types of structures.
