Abstract
The stereoselectivities of reactions of allylmagnesium reagents with chiral ketones cannot be easily explained by stereochemical models. Competition experiments indicate that the complexation step is not reversible, so nucleophiles cannot access the widest range of possible encounter complexes and therefore cannot be analyzed easily using available models. Nevertheless, additions of allylmagnesium reagents to a ketone can still be stereoselective provided that the carbonyl group adopts a conformation that leads to one face being completely blocked from the approach of the allylmagnesium reagent.

Abstract
The establishment of the most stable structures of eight membered rings is a challenging task to the field of conformational analysis. In this work, a series of 2-halocyclooctanones were synthesized (including fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine derivatives) and submitted to conformational studies using a combination of theoretical calculation and infrared spectroscopy. For each compound, four conformations were identified as the most important ones. These conformations are derived from the chair-boat conformation of cyclooctanone. The pseudo-equatorial (with respect to the halogen) conformer is preferred in vacuum and in low polarity solvents for chlorine, bromine and iodine derivatives. For 2-fluorocyclooctanone, the preferred conformation in vacuum is pseudo-axial. In acetonitrile, the pseudo-axial conformer becomes the most stable for the chlorine derivative. According to NBO calculations, the conformational preference is not dictated by electron delocalization, but by classical electrostatic repulsions.

Abstract
Cycloundecane (1) was shown to exist at -183.1 degrees C as a mixture of the [12323] (approximately 59%) and [335] (approximately 41%) conformations. Populations were determined from the (13)C NMR spectrum, and assignments were based on the (13)C spectra, calculated free energies and chemical shifts, and information from the literature, including X-ray studies of solid derivatives and calculated barriers.
