Abstract
The marine natural product norzooanemonin (1,3-dimethylimidazolium-4-carboxylate) has been used to prepare a series of carboxyl- or carboxylate-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) gold(I) complexes from [(Me2S)AuCl] in the presence of potassium carbonate. The potential of the resulting mono- and dicarbene complexes to act as cytotoxic or antibacterial drugs was investigated.

Abstract
Chemical investigation of the MeOH extract from the gorgonian Pseudopterogorgia americana afforded two rare sterols, ameristerenol A (1) and B (2), both 9,11-secosterols possesses a seven-membered cyclic enol-ether in ring C, and ameristerol A (3) is the first example of a naturally occurring 9,11-secosterol containing a gorgosterol side chain with a C-24(28) double bond. Ameristerenol A (1) was converted to the sterol derivatives 4-6 to provide additional chemical diversity and comparison for biological screening. The structures of compounds 1-6, along with three related known analogues 7-9, were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis and by comparison with literature data. Compound 6 exhibited slight cytotoxicity activity against human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231.

Abstract
In the reaction of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [C2C1Im][OAc] ionic liquid with carbon dioxide at 125 °C and 10 MPa, not only the known N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-CO2 adduct I, but also isomeric aNHC-CO2 adducts II and III were obtained. The abnormal NHC-CO2 adducts are stabilized by the presence of the polarizing basic acetate anion, according to static DFT calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics studies. A further possible reaction pathway is facilitated by the high basicity of the system, deprotonating the initially formed NHC-CO2 adduct I, which can then be converted in the presence of the excess of CO2 to the more stable 2-deprotonated anionic abnormal NHC-CO2 adduct via the anionic imidazolium-2,4-dicarboxylate according to DFT calculations on model compounds. This suggests a generalizable pathway to abnormal NHC complex formation.

Abstract
A new pyridinium derivative, polyaxibetaine (3), has been isolated from the marine sponge Axinella polypoides, together with two known modified amino acids, 1 and 2. The planar structure of compound 3 has been elucidated by spectroscopic methods; definition of the absolute configuration of compounds 1-3 has been carried out through ECD studies.

Abstract
The synthesized 1,3-dimethylated imidazolium carbaldehydes serves as synthons for incorporating a permanently cationic imidazolium group into molecular framework. The utility of new synthon was demonstrated in a variety of reactions: Knoevenagel, Wittig, Schiff base formation, based mediated electrophilic substitution and oxidation, including synthesis of the natural product norzooanemonin.

Abstract
Chemical investigation of the hithertho undescribed sponge Dragmacidon sp. from the Andaman Sea afforded two new beta-carboline alkaloids, which were named dragmacidonamines A (1) and B (2). The structures of the new compounds were unambiguously established on the basis of NMR spectroscopic (1H, 13C, COSY, 1H detected direct, and long-range 13C-1H correlations) and mass spectrometric (EI and ESIMS) data. The 3-carboxylic-beta-carboline moiety and the thiomethylated imidazolinium unit as found in dragmacidonamines are very rarely encountered in nature.
