A convenient route to 1,4-monoprotected dialdehydes, 1,4-ketoaldehydes, γ-lactols and γ-lactones through radical alkylation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes in organic and organic-aqueous media

Metal-Free Activation of Molecular Oxygen by 9-Fluorenone-Based Porous Organic Polymers for Selective Aerobic Oxidation

Oxygen activation is a critical step in heterogeneous oxidative processes, particularly in catalytic, electrolytic, and pharmaceutical applications. Among the various catalysts available for photocatalytic O2 activation, homogeneous aryl ketones are at the forefront. To avoid the degradation and deactivation of aryl ketones, 9-fluorenone-based porous organic polymers were designed and regulated by doping them with co-monomers. The obtained heterogeneous photocatalyst showed good performance in O2 activation, and its performance was better than that of homogeneous 9-fluorenone. The obtained heterogeneous photocatalyst showed good reusability. We believe that the presented method and findings represent an important step toward designing catalysts tailored for specific tasks.

Direct Photocatalyzed Hydrogen Atom Transfer (HAT) for Aliphatic C-H Bonds Elaboration

Direct photocatalyzed hydrogen atom transfer (d-HAT) can be considered a method of choice for the elaboration of aliphatic C–H bonds. In this manifold, a photocatalyst (PC_HAT) exploits the energy of a photon to trigger the homolytic cleavage of such bonds in organic compounds. Selective C–H bond elaboration may be achieved by a judicious choice of the hydrogen abstractor (key parameters are the electronic character and the molecular structure), as well as reaction additives. Different are the classes of PCs_HAT available, including aromatic ketones, xanthene dyes (Eosin Y), polyoxometalates, uranyl salts, a metal-oxo porphyrin and a tris(amino)cyclopropenium radical dication. The processes (mainly C–C bond formation) are in most cases carried out under mild conditions with the help of visible light. The aim of this review is to offer a comprehensive survey of the synthetic applications of photocatalyzed d-HAT.

Dual Benzophenone/Copper-Photocatalyzed Giese-Type Alkylation of C(sp3 )-H Bonds

Photocatalyzed Giese-type alkylations of C(sp³ )-H bonds are very attractive reactions in the context of atom-economy in C-C bond formation. The main limitation of such reactions is that when using highly polymerizable olefin acceptors, such as unsubstituted acrylates, acrylonitrile, or methyl vinyl ketone, radical polymerization often becomes the dominant or exclusive reaction pathway. Herein, we report that the polymerization of such olefins is strongly limited or suppressed when combining the photocatalytic activity of benzophenone (BP) with a catalytic amount of Cu(OAc)₂ . Under mild and operationally simple conditions, the Giese adducts resulting from the C(sp³ )-H functionalization of amines, alcohols, ethers, and cycloalkanes could be synthesized. Preliminary mechanistic studies have revealed that the reaction does not proceed through a radical chain, but through a dual BP/Cu photocatalytic process, in which both Cu^II and low-valent Cu^I/0 species, generated in situ by reduction by the BP ketyl radical, may react with α-keto or α-cyano intermediate radicals, thus preventing polymerization.

Direct Access of the Chiral Quinolinyl Core of Cinchona Alkaloids via a Brønsted Acid and Chiral Amine Co-catalyzed Chemo- and Enantioselective α-Alkylation of Quinolinylmethanols with Enals

A strategy for the facile construction of the chiral quinolinylmethanolic structure, a core featured in cinchona alkaloids, is reported. A new reactivity is harnessed by TfOH-promoted chemoselective activation of α-C-H over O-H bond in quinolinylmethanols. The new reactivity is successfully engineered with an iminium catalysis in a synergistic manner to create a powerful conjugate addition-cyclization cascade process for synthesis of chiral quinoline derived γ-butyrolactones in good yields and with good to excellent enantioselectivities. The method enables the first total synthesis of natural product broussonetine in three steps.

The past, present, and future of the Yang reaction

Photoexcited ketones have diradical characteristics and are functionally similar to high-spin metal-oxo species that are frequently used to catalyze C-H oxidation. First discovered by Yang in 1958, photoexcited ketones can abstract a hydrogen atom from hydrocarbons inter- or intramolecularly. Coupling with atom-transfer, group-transfer, or radical addition, the Yang reaction can be used to achieve various types of C-H functionalization. We provide in this article an overview of triplet ketone-mediated or catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions.

Metal-free C-H bond activation of branched aldehydes with a hypervalent iodine(III) catalyst under visible-light photolysis: successful trapping with electron-deficient olefins

Direct acyl radical formation of linear aldehydes (RCH2-CHO) and subsequent hydroacylation with electron-deficient olefins can be effected with various types of metal and nonmetal catalysts/reagents. In marked contrast, however, no successful reports on the use of branched aldehydes have been made thus far because of their strong tendency of generating alkyl radicals through the facile decarbonylation of acyl radicals. Here, use of a hypervalent iodine(III) catalyst under visible light photolysis allows a mild way of generating acyl radicals from various branched aldehydes, thereby giving the corresponding hydroacylated products almost exclusively. Another characteristic feature of this approach is the catalytic use of hypervalent iodine(III) reagent, which is a rare example on the generation of radicals in hypervalent iodine chemistry.

Photoorganocatalysis. What for?

In the reactions reviewed, an organic molecule under irradiation catalyzes a chemical reaction. The activation is based either on hydrogen or on electron transfer. Commonly used photoorganocatalysts are aromatic ketones, quinones, heterocycles, dyes; intermediates formed are radicals, radical ions and ions from precursors such as alkanes, alkenes, amines, ethers etc. Oxidation (mainly oxygenation) and reduction processes are obtained along with the α-functionalization of amines and ketones, conjugate additions, cycloadditions etc. The key characteristic of the method is the smooth generation of highly reactive intermediates under mild conditions.

The photomediated reaction of alkynes with cycloalkanes

In the presence of a photomediator such as benzophenone, alkynes with electron-withdrawing groups react with cycloalkanes to give vinyl cycloalkanes. The reaction involves the regiospecific addition of a photochemically generated cycloalkyl radical to the beta-carbon of the alkyne. The stereochemical outcome of the reaction depends on the nature of the photomediator and alkyne used.

The rapid photomediated alkenylation of 2-alkyl-1,3-dioxolanes with alkynes: a stereoelectronically assisted chain reaction

The photomediated reaction of alkynes such as DMAD with 1,3-dioxolanes leads to remarkably rapid alkenylation; evidence is presented that these reactions occur via a chain mechanism.
