Abstract
Cyclitols are polyhydroxy cycloalkanes, each containing at least three hydroxyls attached to a different ring carbon atom. The most important cyclitol derivatives are inositols, quercitols, conduritols and pinitols, which form a group of naturally occurring polyhydric alcohols and are widely found in plants. In addition, synthetic production of cyclitols has gained importance in recent years. Cylitols are molecules synthesized in plants as a precaution against salt or water stress. They have important functions in cell functioning as they exhibit important properties such as membrane biogenesis, ion channel physiology, signal transduction, osmoregulation, phosphate storage, cell wall formation and antioxidant activity. The biological activities of these very important molecules, obtained both synthetically and from the extraction of plants, are described in this review.

Abstract
Bifunctional thiourea/amine organocatalysts have been used for the desymmetrization of meso-endoperoxides using the Kornblum-DeLaMare reaction, giving 4-hydroxyketones in 78-98% yields with ≤98:2 enantioselectivity. The influence of the catalyst structure, solvent, and temperature was examined. The most promising catalyst was applied to the kinetic resolution of racemic endoperoxides to give enantioenriched materials (≤99:1 er).

Abstract
Starting from cyclooctatetraene, bis-homoconduritols with cis-inositol and allo-inositol (or bicyclo[4.2.0]octane motif) structures were synthesized. Photooxygenation of trans-7,8-dibromo-bicyclo[4.2.0]octa-2,4-diene allowed the preparation of tricyclic endoperoxide. The compound diacetate was obtained by reduction of endoperoxide with thiourea followed by acetylation reaction. Removal of halides with zinc dust in acetic acid yielded the dien-diacetate, a key compound of the designed molecules. OsO4 oxidation of diendiacetate followed by acetylation gave the corresponding hexaacetates. Finally, the novel desired bis-homoinositols were obtained in high yield by the ammonolysis of acetate groups. The structures of all synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods.

Abstract
Micromycetes from unexplored sources represent an opportunity to discover novel natural products to control insect pests. With this aim, a strain of Acremonium masseei CICY026 isolated from a tropical sinkhole was identified, cultured on fermented rice, and its ethyl acetate extract (EAE) was evaluated against three serious phytophagous insects (Bemisia tabaci, Myzus persicae, and Rhopalosiphum padi). DNA from A. masseei CICY026 was used to confirm its identity. EAE caused settling inhibition (SI) of M. persicae and R. padi (67.5% and 75.3%, respectively). Bioassay-guided fractionation of the active EAE led to the isolation of a novel metabolite, named hexahydroacremonintriol (1), and of acremonin A glucoside (2). The structures of 1 and 2 were determined using IR, one- and two-dimensional NMR, HRMS, and confirmed by theoretical data. The aphid M. persicae was noticeably sensitive to 1 and 2 (SI: 55.6% and 67.2%, respectively), whereas R. padi was only slightly affected by 1 (SI: 59%). This new knowledge about mycobiota from these special sinkhole ecosystems will inform the development of new biorational pesticides.

Abstract
The singlet oxygen reactivities and regioselectivities of the model compounds 1b-d were compared with those of the geminal (gem) selectivity model ethyl tiglate (1a). The kinetic cis effect is k(E)/k(Z) = 5.2 for the tiglate/angelate system 1a/1a' without a change in the high gem regioselectivity. Further conjugation to vinyl groups enabled mode-selective processes, namely, [4 + 2] cycloadditions versus ene reactions. The site-specific effects of methylation on the mode selectivity and the regioselectivity of the ene reaction were studied for dienes 1e-g. A vinylogous gem effect was observed for the γ,δ-dimethylated and α,γ,δ-trimethylated substrates 1h and 1i, respectively. The corresponding phenylated substrates 1j-l showed similar mode selectivity, as monomethylated 1j exhibited exclusively [4 + 2] reactivity while the tandem products 12 and 14 were isolated from the di- and trimethylated substrates 1k and 1l, respectively. The vinylogous gem effect favors the formation of 1,3-dienes from the substrates, and thus, secondary singlet oxygen addition was observed to give hydroperoxy-1,2-dioxenes 19 and 20 in an ene-diene transmissive cycloaddition sequence. These products were reduced to give alcohols (16, 17, and 18) or furans (24 and 25), respectively, or treated with titanium(IV) alkoxides to give the epoxy alcohols 26 and 27. The vinylogous gem effect is rationalized by DFT calculations showing that biradicals are the low-energy intermediates and that no reaction path bifurcations compete.

Abstract
1,3,3a,7a-Tetrahydro-2-benzofuran was used as key compound for the synthesis of various bishomoinositol derivatives. The diene was subjected to an epoxidation reaction for further functionalization of the diene unit. The bisepoxide obtained was submitted to a ring-opening reaction with acid in the presence of water. Various bishomoinositols were synthesized. However, when the reaction was carried out in the presence of acetic anhydride, a substituted 3-oxabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane skeleton was formed. The mechanism of the formation of the products is discussed.

Abstract
A new class of aminocyclitol derivatives with the bicyclo[4.2.0]octane skeleton was synthesized starting from cyclooctatetraene. Photooxygenation of trans-7,8-diacetoxy- and cis-7,8-dichlorobicyclo[4.2.0]octa-2,4-diene afforded the bicyclic endoperoxides. Reduction of the latter with thiourea followed by a Pd(0) catalyzed ionization/cyclization reaction gave the corresponding oxazolidinone derivatives. Oxidation of the double bond with KMnO₄ or OsO₄ followed by acetylation gave the acetate derivatives, the exact configuration of which was determined by spectroscopic methods. Hydrolysis of the oxazolidinone rings and removal of the acetate groups furnished the desired aminocyclitols.

Abstract
A series of 3,6-substituted 3,6-dihydro-1,2-dioxines were dihydroxylated with osmium tetroxide to furnish 1,2-dioxane-4,5-diols (peroxy diols) in yields ranging from 33% to 98% and with de values not less than 90%. The peroxy diols were then reduced to generate a stereospecific tetraol core with R,R,S,S or "allitol" stereochemistry. The peroxy diols and their acetonide derivatives were also ring-opened with Co(II) salen complexes to give novel hydroxy ketones in 77-100% yield, including the natural sugar psicose. Importantly, preliminary work on the catalytic asymmetric ring-opening of meso-peroxy diols using the Co(II) Jacobsens's catalyst indicates that asymmetric sugar synthesis from 1,2-dioxines is possible.

Cycloaddition between Electron-Deficient π-Systems, Photochemical and Radical-Induced Reactions: A Novel, General, and Stereoselective Route to Polyfunctionalized Bridged Bicyclo[2.2.2]octanes, Bicyclo[3.3.0]octanes, Bicyclo[4.2.0]octanes, and Tricyclo[4.3.1.03,7]decanes. Abstract
A novel, general, and stereoselective route to functionalized bridged bicyclo[2.2.2]octanes, bicyclo[3.3.0]octanes, bicyclo[4.2.0]octanes, and tricyclo[4.3.1.0(3,7)]decanes has been described. Various functionalized and substituted bicyclo[2.2.2]octanes endowed with a beta,gamma-enone chromophore were synthesized via cycloaddition of in situ generated cyclohexa-2,4-dienones with electron-deficient 2pi partners and manipulation of the resulting adducts. Triplet sensitized irradiation of bridged bicyclooctenones led to synthesis of bicyclo[3.3.0]octanoids, whereas the direct irradiation furnished bicyclo[4.2.0]octanes in stereoselective fashion as a result of modulation of reactivity in excited states. Further, manipulation of the adducts led to appropriately appended and functionalized bicyclo[2.2.2]octanes that upon radical induced cyclization provided an efficient and stereoselective route to the tricyclo[4.3.1.0(3,7)]decane (isotwistane) framework of pupukeananes.

Abstract
Herein, we describe the synthesis of advanced intermediate 39 on the path towards the total synthesis of teucrolivin A (3) in 16 steps from commercially available 1,3-cyclohexadiene. We have constructed the trans-decalin core of the natural product 3 as a single diastereomer using a tandem oxy-Cope/Claisen/ene cascade and in doing so have incorporated sufficient functionality to allow completion of the total synthesis.

Abstract
Bis-homoconduritol derivatives with conduritol-A, -D, and -F structures have been synthesized starting from cyclooctatetraene. The photooxygenation of trans-7,8-dibromo- and cis-7,8-dichlorobicyclo[4.2.0]octa-2,4-dienes afforded the bicyclic endoperoxides. Reduction of the endoperoxides with thiourea followed by acetylation gave the corresponding diacetates. The KMnO(4) oxidation and epoxidation of the diacetates followed by acetylation gave the tetraacetates. Removal of the halides either with zinc-dust or Na-anthracene followed by the ammonolysis of tetraacetates afforded the bis-homoconduritol derivatives in high yield.
