Abstract
Sulfinic acids (RSO2H) have a reputation for being difficult reagents due to their facile autoxidation. Nevertheless, they have recently been employed as key reagents in a variety of useful radical chain reactions. To account for this paradox and enable further development of radical reactions employing sulfinic acids, we have characterized the thermodynamics and kinetics of their H-atom transfer reactions for the first time. The O-H bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) of sulfinic acids was determined by radical equilibration to be ∼78 kcal mol-1; roughly halfway between the RS-H BDE in thiols (∼87 kcal mol-1) and RSO-H BDE in sulfenic acids (∼70 kcal mol-1). Regardless, RSH, RSOH and RSO2H have relatively similar inherent H-atom transfer reactivity to alkyl radicals (∼106 M-1 s-1). Counter-intuitively, the trend in rate constants with more reactive alkoxyl radicals follows the reaction energetics: ∼108 M-1 s-1 for RSO2H, midway between thiols (∼107 M-1 s-1) and sulfenic acids (∼109 M-1 s-1). Importantly, since sulfinic and sulfenic acids are very strong H-bond donors (αH2 ∼ 0.63 and 0.55, respectively), their reactivity is greatly attenuated in H-bond accepting solvents, whereas the reactivity of thiols is largely solvent-independent. Efforts to measure rate constants for the reactions of sulfinic acids with alkylperoxyl radicals were unsuccessful. Computations predict these reactions to be surprisingly slow; ∼1000-times slower than for thiols and ∼10 000 000-times slower than for sulfenic acids. On the other hand, the reaction of sulfinic acids with sulfonylperoxyl radicals - which propagate sulfinic acid autoxidation - is predicted to be almost diffusion-controlled. In fact, the rate-determining step in sulfinic acid autoxidation, and the reason they can be used for productive chemistry, is the relatively slow reaction of propagating sulfonyl radicals with O2 (∼106 M-1 s-1).

Abstract
Alkenylation and allylation of alkyl iodides with alkenyl and allyl sulfones, respectively, took place under Pd/photoirradiation system. The initial alkyl radical, derived from a single electron transfer between Pd(0) and RI, underwent the title transformations. Pd(0) was regenerated through a reductive elimination of PhSO2PdI, which is formed by the combination of the sulfonyl radical and the palladium radical. The addition of water was effective, presumably by pushing the equilibrium through hydrolysis of PhSO2I.

Abstract
New Peterson reagents were prepared by introducing alkyloxy groups on the silicon atom in order to fix the conformation of the sulfone anion. The reagents 1d and 1e reacted with a variety of aldehydes after the treatment with Li-base to give Z-α,β-unsaturated sulfones with up to >99:1 selectivity in good to excellent yields. For the reaction with aliphatic aldehydes, CPME (cyclopentyl methyl ether) is the choice of solvent, while DME (1,2-dimethoxyethane) gave higher selectivity for the reaction with aromatic aldehydes.

Abstract
A highly efficient metal-free decarboxylative sulfonylation protocol for the preparation of (E)-vinyl sulfones from of β-aryl-α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids using sodium sulfinates and (diacetoxyiodo)benzene (PhI(OAc)2) was developed. This strategy offers a simple and expedient synthesis of (E)-vinyl sulfones bearing a wide variety of functional groups. A radical-based pathway has been proposed for this decarboxylative sulfonylation reaction.

Abstract
![]()
(E)-4-Hydroxynon-2-enal (HNE), an electrophilic bifunctional cytotoxic lipid peroxidation product, forms covalent adducts with nucleophilic side chains of amino acid residues. HNE-derived adducts have been implicated in many pathophysiological processes including atherosclerosis, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. Tritium- and deuterium-labeled HNE (d4-HNE) were used orthogonally to study adduction with proteins and individual nucleophilic groups of histidyl, lysyl, and cysteine residues. Using tritium-labeled HNE, we detected the binding of 486 molecules of HNE per low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle, significantly more than the total number of all reactive nucleophiles in the LDL particle. This suggests the formation of adducts that incorporate multiple molecules of HNE with some nucleophilic amino acid side chains. We also found that the reaction of a 1:1 mixture of d4-HNE and d0-HNE with N-acetylhistidine, N-acetyl-Gly-Lys-OMe, or N-acetyl cysteine generates 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 adducts, which exhibit unique mass spectral signatures that aid in structural characterization. A domino-like reaction of initial 1:1 HNE Michael adducts of histidyl or lysyl nucleophiles with multiple additional HNE molecules forms 2:1 and 3:1 adducts that were structurally characterized by tandem mass spectrometry.

Abstract
The reactivity of a range of pyridone and pyrazinone derivatives towards alkynes in the presence of cyclopentadienylcobaltbis(ethene) has been investigated. Depending on the nature of the substrates, [2+2+2]- or [2+2] cycloaddition, C-H, or N-H activation may occur. In the case of pyridones, the first three predominated with N-protected derivatives, whereas substrates containing N-H bonds followed an N-H activation pathway. The [2+2+2] cycloaddition of an N-butynylisoquinolone was applied successfully to the total synthesis of anhydrolycorinone. Pyrazinone substrates showed similar patterns of reactivity.
