Efficient ring closure of stable crystalline 3,5-di-O-triflates of pentofuranosides with amines to form azetidines allowed preliminary evaluation of four-ring iminosugars as glycosidase inhibitors; significant and specific inhibition of nonmammalian α-glucosidases is shown by L-xylo- and L-arabino-iminosugar azetidines.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Six-membered cyclic phosphates (2-phenoxy-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinanes) bearing an internal protected or unprotected hydroxyl group were designed, synthesized, and studied by NMR and computational methods. Selective opening of O-isopropylidene-protected 1,2-diols at the primary site was achieved with either triethylsilane or trimethylallylsilane in the presence of BF3.OEt2. Applied to 5,6-O-isopropylidenepentofuranosides, this reaction gave rise to the formation of the corresponding 1,3-diol precursors for the six-membered ring phosphates containing an O-isopropyl or O-1,1-dimethyl-3-butenyl functional group at C-6. The O-1,1-dimethyl-3-butenyl protecting group was efficiently removed after the phosphorylation with BF3.OEt2, and the six-membered cyclic phosphates containing free hydroxyl groups were obtained. A cyclic phosphate with a free hydroxyl group oriented cis to the phosphoryl group shows a vicinal coupling constant 3J(HP) that is in accordance with the chair conformation. This is due to the formation of a seven-membered intramolecular hydrogen-bonded ring structure that stabilizes the chair conformation. Thus, the strong tendency of the phenoxy group to be in an axial position is diminished by the internal hydrogen bonding interaction. Computational studies provided strong support for the experimental observation.

Abstract
A one-pot, multi-component reaction for the synthesis of highly substituted tetrahydropyran-4-ones, based on the long forgotten Maitland-Japp reaction has been realised. Two different aldehydes and a derivative of a beta-ketoester can be condensed regioselectively in the presence of a Lewis acid to form tetrahydropyran-4-ones in excellent yields. The diastereoselectively of the reaction was found to be dependant upon the nature of the Lewis acid and the temperature at which the reaction was carried out. This procedure was also extended to the formation of tetrahydropyran-4-ones in greater than 95% enantiomeric excess.

Abstract
The synthesis of a panel of arabinofuranosyl oligosaccharide analogues (5-13) in which one ring is locked into either the E(3) or OE conformation is described. The E(3)-locked scaffolds 15 and 16 required for the synthesis of 5-10 were prepared in one step from known 1,5-anhydroalditols. A number of routes were explored for the preparation of the OE-locked monosaccharide derivative 17 needed for the preparation of 11-13. The successful synthesis of 17 was achieved in 17 steps from D-arabinose. Subsequent analysis of 5-13 by 1H NMR spectroscopy demonstrated that the locked residue does not exert any detectable influence upon the conformers populated by adjacent conformationally unrestricted furanose rings.

Abstract
A convergent total synthesis of the marine natural product dysiherbaine was accomplished. The key steps of the synthesis are an alkylation at the gamma-carbon of a protected glutamate with a highly substituted pyran derived from mannose, which was followed by a ring-contraction cascade reaction, which simultaneously gave the tetrasubstituted carbon and the hexahydrofuro[3,2-b]pyran ring system of the natural product.
