Experimental and theoretical investigations into the stereoselectivities of peracid promoted epoxidations of substituted norbornenes and norbornadienes

Planar transition structures in the epoxidation of alkenes. A DFT study on the reaction of peroxyformic acid with norbornene derivatives

We studied, with the RB3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) method, the mechanism of peroxyformic acid epoxidation of norbornene, norbornadiene, tetramethylethene, and anti- and syn-sesquinorbornenes. The transition structures (TSs) for the reaction of tetramethylethene and norbornene show a perfect spiro geometry (the peroxy acid plane is perpendicular to the C=C bond axis) with synchronous bond formation. Also three out of the four TSs of the norbornadiene reaction are spiro-like, but the highly asynchronous syn,endo-TS has a planar-like geometry. anti- and syn-sesquinorbornenes are substrates that, because of steric constraints, cannot easily accommodate spiro-like TSs. In fact, we managed to locate only a planar-like TS and a planar TS (the peroxy acid plane contains the C=C bond axis), respectively, for these substrates. These planar TSs are "nonconcerted" since they are strongly unsymmetrical and only one of the C-O bonds of the oxirane ring is significantly formed. IRC analysis, while confirming that formation of one C-O bond fully precedes that of the other, also suggests that all this can take place without formation of intermediates, that is, within a "nonconcerted one-step process". Our theoretical data correctly reproduce the experimental facial syn selectivity of norbornene and norbornadiene epoxidations and compare well with the experimental activation free energies of the peroxy acid epoxidation of all the olefins reported here. This accord validates the method used as adequate to deal with the reactivity of these systems.

Are Peroxyformic Acid and Dioxirane Electrophilic or Nucleophilic Oxidants?,

The electronic character of peroxyformic acid and dioxirane has been clarified by the analysis of donor-acceptor interactions in 16 transition states (TS) for the epoxidation of olefins. Is has been shown that the olefins are attacked by peroxyformic acid (PFA) in an electrophilic way. A relation of the electronic character to reactivity has been found: the more electrophilic the attack on the C=C bond is, the faster the reaction. In contrast, dioxirane (DO) has been identified as both an electrophilic and nucleophilic oxidant, depending on the substituents at the C=C double bond. The substrates with electron-withdrawing groups are attacked by DO in a nucleophilic way. These reactions have comparably low activation barriers. For instance, the acrylonitrile epoxidation with dioxirane is significantly faster than the corresponding reaction with PFA and proceeds via a transition state with a smaller extent of reaction and a larger extent of asymmetry.

Measuring splitting and overlapping in molecular systems. A fuzzy set estimation of reaction hazards

An algorithm for assessments of fuzzy molecular structural characteristics has been presented, and its chemical relevance is approved for numerous evidences of reaction mechanisms. Empirical rules pervading the results of chemical synthesis are continuously the source of information efficiently used by experimental chemists and technologists. Approaching them theoretically to broaden areas of applicability and to make them more precise for better prediction is of great importance to reach progress in the chemical information recognition and to steer and control technological processes. Fuzzy sets called splitting and overlapping have been applied for assessments of the reaction hazards. The mathematically grounded properties turned out to underlie well-known empirical rules for preliminary estimations of organic reaction tendencies. Informative quantitative data shown are revealing new ways of understanding basic chemical reaction mechanisms.
