Abstract
The development of a new class of concave P-stereogenic phosphorodiamidite ligands, derived from Tröger's bases (TBs), is explored. These ligands, characterized by their remarkable stability and unique structural geometry around the P atom, are used in asymmetric Rh(I)-catalyzed additions of boronic acids to NH-isatins resulting in excellent reactivities and reasonable enantioselectivity (er up to 92:8).

Abstract
This article reviews the development of concepts of chirality in chemistry. The story follows the parallel development of the optical properties of materials and the understanding of chemical structure until the two are fused in the recognition of the tetrahedral carbon atom in 1874. The different types of chiral molecule that have been identified since the first concept of the asymmetric carbon atom are introduced as is the notation used in various disciplines of chemistry to describe the relative or absolute configuration. In the final section, a polemical case for a unified nomenclature is presented.

Abstract
Attachment of a pair of P-stereogenic mesityl(alkynyl)phosphanyl groups at the 4- and 5-positions of a 9,9-dimethylxanthene framework gave mixtures of the respective rac- and meso-bisphosphanyl diastereoisomers. They slowly epimerized in a thermally induced reaction with Gibbs activation barriers of about 25 kcal mol-1 at room temperature (measured and DFT calculated). The reaction of the meso-mesityl(tert-butylethynyl)phosphanyl derivative with two molar equivalents of Piers' borane [HB(C6 F5 )2 ] led to the formation of the alkylidene-bridged geminal bisphosphane/borane-frustrated Lewis pair system. The compound was obtained enriched (>85 %) in the rac diastereoisomer. With a variety of bifunctional donor substrates, the rac-bis-P/B FLP formed macrocyclic compounds. They were all formally derived from meso-configurated diastereoisomers of the bisphosphanylxanthene backbone.

Abstract
Atom-efficient processes that occur via addition, redistribution or removal of hydrogen underlie many large volume industrial processes and pervade all segments of chemical industry. Although carbonyl addition is one of the oldest and most broadly utilized methods for C-C bond formation, the delivery of non-stabilized carbanions to carbonyl compounds has relied on premetalated reagents or metallic/organometallic reductants, which pose issues of safety and challenges vis-à-vis large volume implementation. Catalytic carbonyl reductive couplings promoted via hydrogenation, transfer hydrogenation and hydrogen auto-transfer allow abundant unsaturated hydrocarbons to serve as substitutes to organometallic reagents, enabling C-C bond formation in the absence of stoichiometric metals. This perspective (a) highlights past milestones in catalytic hydrogenation, hydrogen transfer and hydrogen auto-transfer, (b) summarizes current methods for catalytic enantioselective carbonyl reductive couplings, and (c) describes future opportunities based on the patterns of reactivity that animate transformations of this type.

Abstract
1-Phenylphosphol-2-ene 1-oxide is effectively resolved by L-menthyl bromoacetate to afford both SP and RP enantiomers of 1-phenylphosphol-2-ene 1-oxide on a multigram scale. The resolved 1-phenylphosphol-2-ene oxide has been found to undergo face-selective and endo-selective cycloadditions with a series of acyclic and cyclic dienes to produce enantiopure P-stereogenic C-P heterocycles of hexahydrophosphindole and hexahydrobenzophosphindole as well as phospha[5.2.1.02,6]decene and phospha[5.2.2.02,6]undecene structures. Conversions of these cycloadducts to the fully saturated heterocyclic systems as well as to their P (III), P = S, P = Se and P-BH3 derivatives have been demonstrated to occur with retention of configuration and preservation of configurational homogeneity at P. A perplexing case of stereomutation at P during reduction of a tricyclic β-hydroxy phosphine oxide by PhSiH3 at 80 °C has been recorded.

Abstract
Diphosphahexaarenes are highly stable π‐extended frameworks containing two six‐membered phosphorus heterocycles that have emerged recently. Herein, we present a detailed investigation on the post‐functionalization reactions of their phosphorus centers with special emphasis on the selectivity of the processes and the impact of the phosphorus functionalizations into the physicochemical properties. These studies reveal that indeed the phosphorus atoms of the diphosphahexaarenes are readily available to be functionalized with quaternizing and oxidizing agents as well as borane groups without compromising the stability of the system. In addition, the optoelectronic properties of the diphosphahexaarenes are impacted by the phosphorus post‐modifications.

A new fundamental type of conformational isomerism. Nat Chem 2018; 10:615-624. Abstract
Isomerism is a fundamental chemical concept, reflecting the fact that the arrangement of atoms in a molecular entity has a profound influence on its chemical and physical properties. Here we describe a previously unclassified fundamental form of conformational isomerism through four resolved stereoisomers of a transoid (BF)O(BF)-quinoxalinoporphyrin. These comprise two pairs of enantiomers that manifest structural relationships not describable within existing IUPAC nomenclature and terminology. They undergo thermal diastereomeric interconversion over a barrier of 104 ± 2 kJ mol-1, which we term 'akamptisomerization'. Feasible interconversion processes between conceivable synthesis products and reaction intermediates were mapped out by density functional theory calculations, identifying bond-angle inversion (BAI) at a singly bonded atom as the reaction mechanism. We also introduce the necessary BAI stereodescriptors parvo and amplo. Based on an extended polytope formalism of molecular structure and stereoisomerization, BAI-driven akamptisomerization is shown to be the final fundamental type of conformational isomerization.

Abstract
Merging the chemistry of transfer hydrogenation and carbonyl or imine addition, a broad new family of redox-neutral or reductive hydrohydroxyalkylations and hydroaminomethylations have been developed. In these processes, hydrogen redistribution between alcohols and π-unsaturated reactants is accompanied by C-C bond formation, enabling direct conversion of lower alcohols to higher alcohols. Similarly, hydrogen redistribution between amines to π-unsaturated reactants results in direct conversion of lower amines to higher amines. Alternatively, equivalent products of hydrohydroxyalkylation and hydroaminomethylation may be generated through the reaction of carbonyl compounds or imines with π-unsaturated reactants under the conditions of 2-propanol-mediated reductive coupling. Finally, using vicinally dioxygenated reactants, that is, diol, ketols, or diones, successive transfer hydrogenative coupling occurs to generate 2 C-C bonds, resulting in products of formal [4+2] cycloaddition.

Abstract
New unsymmetrically substituted ferrocenyl-phosphonium ionic liquids (ILs) [FcPR2R']NTf2 are synthesized by two or three step syntheses starting from ferrocene, Fc = (C5H5)Fe(C5H4); R = Me, (n)Bu, (n)Hex, Ph; R' = Me, (n)Pr, (n)Bu, Ph; NTf2 = N(SO2CF3)2. The selective synthesis of alkyl phosphines FcPR2via a Friedel-Crafts phosphorylation is highlighted as an alternative for the standard protocol commonly used for ferrocenyl arylphosphines involving lithiation of FcH followed by phosphorylation. The influence of the P-substituents on thermal stability, electrochemical potential, chemical shift, and UV-Vis absorption behavior of the ILs is studied. The phosphonium group acts both as an ionic tag and as an electron-withdrawing substituent directly bound at the Cp-ring position. Therefore the title compounds are attractive for further studies to use them as tunable redox mediators for (photo)electrochemical devices such as dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) or redox flow batteries.

Abstract
An efficient and general method for the preparation of achiral and chiral phosphonium salts is reported. This synthesis is based on the quaternization of phosphines and their derivatives with arynes generated in situ from 2-(trimethylsilyl)aryl triflates. This methodology is successfully applied to the synthesis of new valuable P-stereogenic phosphonium triflates.

Abstract
Residual stereoisomerism is a form of stereoisomerism scarcely considered so far for applicative purposes, though extremely interesting, since the production of stereoisomers does not involve classical rigid stereogenic elements. In three-bladed propeller-shaped molecules, a preferred stereomerization mechanism, related to the correlated rotation of the rings, allows the free interconversion of stereoisomers inside separated sets (the residual stereoisomers) that can interconvert through higher energy pathways. In light of possible future applications as chiral ligands for transition metals in stereoselective processes, some C(3)-symmetric phosphorus-centered propellers, which could exist as residual enantiomers, are synthesized and the possibility of resolving their racemates into residual antipodes is explored. While the tris(aryl)methanes are configurationally stable at room temperature, only selected tris(aryl)phosphane oxides display a configurational stability high enough to allow resolution by HPLC on a chiral stationary phase (CSP HPLC) at a semipreparative level at room temperature. Stability was evaluated through different techniques (circular dichroism (CD) signal decay, dynamic CSP HPLC (CSP DHPLC), dynamic NMR analysis (DNMR)) and the results compared and discussed. Phosphanes were found much less stable than the corresponding phosphane oxides, for which preliminary calculations suggest that the three-ring-flip enantiomerization mechanism (M(0)) would be easier than phosphorus pyramidal inversion. The parameters affecting the configurational stability of the residual enantiomers of C(3)-symmetric propellers are discussed.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] The synthesis of pure cis- and trans-3-methoxy-2,2,6-trimethyl-3-phenyl-1,3-oxaphosphorinanium tetrafluoroborate salts 3a and 3b, respectively, molecules designed to evaluate the effect of oxygen on the steric course of base-induced nucleophilic displacement of the methoxy group at phosphorus, was accomplished. It was found that these isomeric salts react with aqueous sodium hydroxide to produce the corresponding phosphine oxides 7a and 7b with complete retention of configuration at phosphorus.
