Abstract
The palladium-catalyzed coupling of an aziridinylzinc chloride intermediate with alkenyl and aryl halides has been demonstrated. The method provides products with retention of aziridine stereochemistry. The utility of the coupling procedure is illustrated in the synthesis of structures related to l-furanomycin.

Abstract
Alpha,alpha-disubstituted aziridines can be produced in good yields by selective lithiation of N-tert-butylsulfonyl-2-phenylaziridine (n-BuLi/TMEDA, Et(2)O) at the benzylic position and subsequent trapping with a range of electrophiles. Repetition of the lithiation/electrophilic trapping sequence provides a stereocontrolled route to trisubstituted aziridines. Using (R)-N-tert-butylsulfonyl-2-phenylaziridine, the alpha,alpha-disubstituted aziridines can be produced as single enantiomers (er >98:2), indicating that the intermediate organolithium is configurationally stable. Efficient aziridine ring-opening reactions leading to 1,2-diamines and 1,4-diamines are also reported.

Abstract
In 18 out of 20 examples of the organolithium-mediated conversion of beta-alkoxy aziridines into substituted allylic sulfonamides, use of a Bus (Bus = t-BuSO2) substituent on the nitrogen gave higher yields compared to the analogous N-Ts compounds. The success with the N-Bus aziridines facilitated the development of a new route to the spirocyclic core of the histrionicotoxins and completion of a formal synthesis of (+/-)-perhydrohistrionicotoxin.

Abstract
The regioselective lithiation of terminal oxazolinylaziridines has been investigated. The steric hindrance of the nitrogen substituent in 1-trityl-2-oxazolinylaziridine 3a, combined with the coordinating ability of the oxazolinyl group, causes beta-lithiation, whereas a completely regioselective alpha-lithiation is observed with the much less sterically demanding 1-benzyl-2-oxazolinylaziridine 3c and a competition between alpha- and beta-lithiation occurs with 1-cumyl-2-oxazolinylaziridine 3b in which the N-substituent has a steric hindrance in between the trityl and the benzyl groups. The application of the lithiation-trapping sequence for the preparation of enantioenriched 2,3-cis-disubstituted oxazolinylaziridines and aziridino-gamma-lactones is also reported.

Abstract
The sequential one-pot double dearomatization of bis(N-benzyl-P,P-diphenylphosphinamides) via anionic cyclization is described for the first time. Protonation and alkylation of the dearomatized dianions provide bis(tetrahydro-2,1-benzazaphospholes) in good yield and with very high regio- and stereocontrol. Acid-catalyzed methanolysis of the bisheterocycles affords bis(methyl gamma-aminophosphinates) stereospecifically. The doubly phosphorylated systems proved to be active against a series of cancer cell lines.

Abstract
[structure: see text]. The lithiation reaction of cis- and trans-N-alkyl-2,3-diphenylaziridines has been investigated. While cis-diphenylaziridines do not undergo any lithiation upon treatment with organolithiums, the lithiation reaction of the trans counterparts is completely alpha-regioselective and the stereochemical course of the lithiation-trapping sequence is solvent dependent: inversion of configuration in coordinating solvents (THF or toluene/crown ether) and retention in hexane, ether, or toluene. The preparation of stereodefined functionalized N-alkyl-2,3-diphenylaziridines is described.

Abstract
The ortho lithiation-trapping sequence of phenylaziridines is described. This methodology, which counts on the ability of the aziridino group to act as a directed metalation group (DMG), provides an easy access to functionalized arylaziridines as well as to phthalans and phthalides. The importance of the aziridine N-substituent in this DoM reaction is stressed as well. [reaction: see text]

Abstract
The mechanism of the anionic dearomatisation of phosphinamide derivatives has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The potential-energy surface of model reactions was studied at the Becke3LYP/6-31+G* level of theory, and according to this study, a pre-reactive complex is formed between the alkyllithium and the phosphinamide. This complex evolves preferentially through NC(alpha)-metalation of the phosphinamide. The intramolecular nucleophilic addition of the carbanion to the ortho position of the aromatic ring leads to the dearomatised products, in a reaction that has been shown to be under thermodynamic control. Coordinating co-solvents, such as hexamethyl phosphoramide (HMPA) or N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-propylene urea (DMPU), appear to influence the reaction by favouring the formation of solvent-separated ion pairs. The cyclisation reaction of allylphosphinamide derivatives was also studied. It was found that both the alpha- and gamma-attack of the allyl anion can take place, however the formation of the seven-membered ring products derived from the gamma-attack are clearly favoured.

Abstract
The mechanism of the anionic cyclization dearomatizing reaction of N-benzyl-N-methyldiphenylphosphinamide (1) upon treatment with s-BuLi in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at -90 degrees C has been analyzed by deuterium-labeling and natural abundance multinuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H, (2)H, (7)Li, (13)C, (31)P) studies. In the absence of coordinating cosolvents such as hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA), eight major anionic species were identified, which allowed us to unravel the pathway of the metalation reaction. In agreement with the complex-induced proximity effect (CIPE) mechanism, the sequence of transformations emerging from this study involves the coordination of the lithium base to the P=O group of 1 to give four dimeric precomplexes whose NMR data are consistent with structures Va/Vb and VIIIa/VIIIb. The diastereomers Va/Vb are the precursors of the monomeric benzylic anion II, whereas the VIIIa/VIIIb diastereomers are assumed to undergo ortho deprotonation leading to anions I. Translocation from the ortho anion to the benzylic one is not observed. Intramolecular conjugate addition of anion II to the P-phenyl rings happens in a reversible way, affording the monomeric dearomatized anions III, IV, VI, and VII. The reaction progresses to yield a mixture containing only the species I, III, and IV. HMPA acts as a catalyst for the ortho-to-benzylic translocation and anionic cyclization reactions. Two-dimensional (2D) (7)Li,(31)P[(1)H] shift correlations and (7)Li[(31)P] NMR spectra proved to be crucial for the structural assignment of the anionic species. These techniques also demonstrated the diastereotopicity of the two achiral ligands involved in a dimer with s-BuLi (Vb) owing to the slow configuration inversion of the carbanion center.
