Abstract
A simple, mild and efficient scope pathway for a selective catalytic chlorination of terpenic olefins is investigated in the presence of a highly efficient chlorination agent and a readily available Lewis acid catalyst. The sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) used in the present work as an easy handling, sustainable and cost-effective chlorine donor due to its high free available chlorine (FAC), exhibits a high efficiency for selective catalytic chlorination. Herein, we report for the first-time the FeCl2/NaDCC combination system for the selective catalytic chlorination towards new functionalized terpenic olefins. In order to examine the general features of this catalytic reaction, the effects of pH, solvent, dilution, chlorination agent nature, stoichiometry and reaction kinetics are optimized using carvone as a model substrate. Among the studied parameters, catalyst stoichiometry was found to be determinant for highly controllable chlorination selectivity towards new allylic and vinylic chlorides. Indeed, the oxidation state, ligand and metal effects of the catalyst are examined using various Lewis acids, where the chlorinated ones (MClx), such as FeCl2, FeCl3 and SnCl2, exhibit a comprehensive approach for a controllable chlorination reaction. In addition, the homogeneous catalytic system shows good reusability with significant catalytic conversion depending on the FAC content in the reaction medium. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions with shorter reaction time and high selectivity towards new high added value allylic and vinylic chlorinated derivatives of naturally occurring terpenic olefins in good to excellent yields.

Abstract
Ethylene is a gaseous hydrocarbon molecule known as a plant hormone that promotes fruit ripening and senescence. Efficiently controlling ethylene is a central key to maintaining the quality of agricultural products. The current study uncovered a synthetic method for 1-(2,2-dimethylpropyl)-cyclopropene (1-DCP) as a cyclopropene derivative to inhibit ethylene action in fruit ripening and senescence. We synthesized 1-DCP using α-diisobutylene through a two-step process, including allylic chlorination by hypochlorite and HCl, followed by α-elimination of the allylic chloride using a strong base, lithium diethylamide. GC-MS and NMR analyses demonstrated that 1-DCP was synthesized efficiently with 35% yield and 95% purity. When treated as an aqueous emulsion on plants, including persimmon and banana fruits, 1 mM 1-DCP showed effective inhibition of ethylene action by delaying the flesh softening and peel degreening, which are representative phenomena of fruit ripening and senescence induced by ethylene. Our data demonstrated that 1-DCP could be synthesized and used as a sprayable ethylene antagonist for pre- or post-harvest growth regulation in plants and fruits.

Abstract
A mild and convenient method for the allylic chlorination of naturally occurring terpenic olefins was investigated in the presence of different supported and non-supported Lewis acid catalysts. The reaction has been tested on carvone as a model substrate in the presence of sodium hypochlorite as chlorine donor. The scope and limitations of transition metal-based Lewis acid catalysts, stoichiometry, and substrate structure were evaluated. Among the iron precursors used, FeCl3 and FeCl2 provide the promise of a general approach to allylic or vinylic chlorination reaction. Various terpenic olefins were examined in the presence of FeCl3/NaOCl combination system. The catalytic chlorination proceeds under mild conditions with short reaction time and shows a high selectivity affording the corresponding chlorides in good to excellent yields.

Abstract
Efforts are described towards the total synthesis of the bacterial macrolide rhizoxin F, which is a potent tubulin assembly and cancer cell growth inhibitor. A significant amount of work was expanded on the construction of the rhizoxin core macrocycle by ring-closing olefin metathesis (RCM) between C(9) and C(10), either directly or by using relay substrates, but in no case was ring-closure achieved. Macrocycle formation was possible by ring-closing alkyne metathesis (RCAM) at the C(9)/C(10) site. The requisite diyne was obtained from advanced intermediates that had been prepared as part of the synthesis of the RCM substrates. While the direct conversion of the triple bond formed in the ring-closing step into the C(9)-C(10) E double bond of the rhizoxin macrocycle proved to be elusive, the corresponding Z isomer was accessible with high selectivity by reductive decomplexation of the biscobalt hexacarbonyl complex of the triple bond with ethylpiperidinium hypophosphite. Radical-induced double bond isomerization, full elaboration of the C(15) side chain, and directed epoxidation of the C(11)-C(12) double bond completed the total synthesis of rhizoxin F.

Abstract
A short total synthesis of the novel unnatural parthenolide diastereomer (±)-4,5-dia-parthenolide was accomplished in 13 steps and an overall yield of 1.75% starting from commercially available (E,E)-farnesol. The challenging isopropenyl side chain oxidation was regioselectively achieved via a newly developed stepwise dihydroxylation procedure, employing a Bartlett-Smith iodocarbonate cyclization followed by iodide substitution and catalytic transesterification.

Abstract
During the course of our research to find novel mode of action antibacterials, we discovered a series of hydroxyl tricyclic compounds that showed good potency against Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. These compounds inhibit bacterial type IIA topoisomerases. Herein we will discuss structure-activity relationships in this series and report advanced studies on compound 1 (GSK966587) which demonstrates good PK and in vivo efficacy properties. X-ray crystallographic studies were used to provide insight into the structural basis for the difference in antibacterial potency between enantiomers.

Abstract
Judicious choice of cation allows the selective cyclization of substituted gamma-hydroxynitriles to trans- or cis-decalins and trans- or cis-bicyclo[5.4.0]undecanes. The stereoselectivities are consistent with deprotonations generating two distinctly different metalated nitriles: an internally coordinated nitrile anion with BuLi, and a C-magnesiated nitrile with i-PrMgCl. Employing cations to control the geometry of metalated nitriles permits stereodivergent cyclizations with complete control over the stereochemistry of the quaternary, nitrile-bearing carbon.
