Abstract
Adjusting the protecting group strategy, from an alkyl ether to a bidentate ketal at the carbohydrate backbone of uridine, facilitates a switchable diastereoselective α- or β-C4'/C5'-spirocyclopropanation. Using these spirocyclopropanated nucleosides as key intermediates, we synthesized a variety of C4'-methylated d-ribose and l-lyxose-configured uridine derivatives by a base-mediated ring-opening of the spirocyclopropanol moiety. Investigations of antiviral activity against the human respiratory syncytial virus were carried out for selected derivatives, showing moderate activity.

Abstract
Geometry optimizations at the B3LYP level of density functional theory (DFT) are reported for methyl 4-O-acetyl-3-azido- and 3-azido-4-O-methylsulfonyl-2,3,6-trideoxy-alpha,beta-d-threo- and -beta-d-erythro-hex-5-enopyranosides. The most stable conformers for each compound are presented, along with the corresponding enthalpies and Gibbs free energies. The influence of the exocyclic double bond on the chair conformation is discussed. Conformations of the 1-OMe, 3-N3, and 4-OAc groups were examined, and delocalization in the OAc and N3 groups was demonstrated. The contributions of particular conformers to the total number of structures found for each hex-5-enopyranoside were calculated. The theoretical results are compared with assignments based on 1H NMR studies.

Abstract
An efficient divergent synthesis of L-sugars and L-iminosugars from D-sugars is described. The important intermediate, delta-hydroxyalkoxamate, prepared from D-glucono-/galactono-1,5-lactone, was cyclized under Mitsunobu conditions to give the O-cyclized oxime compound and the N-cyclized lactam compound as mixtures. A more detailed investigation revealed that the appropriate protecting groups and solvents controlled the specificity for the O-/N-cyclization of the delta-hydroxyalkoxamate. Suitable protection at the 6-position of delta-hydroxyalkoxamate, derived from D-glucono-1,5-lactone, afforded the corresponding O-alkylation product alone. Thus we succeeded in applying this to the total synthesis of L-iduronic acid. In contrast, with both TBDMS as the protecting group and RCN as the solvent the efficient conversion of D-glucono/galactono-1,5-lactone into the corresponding L-iminosugars (L-idonolactam and L-altronolactam) was achieved.

Abstract
Methyl 3-azido-2,3-dideoxy-alpha-D-xylo-, -alpha-D-lyxo-, and -beta-D-xylo-hexopyranosides were converted into 4-O-acetyl-3-azido-6-iodo-2,3,6-trideoxy analogues via 6-O-p-tolylsulfonyl compounds. The elimination of hydrogen iodide from 6-iodo glycosides yielded methyl 4-O-acetyl-3-azido-2,3,6-trideoxy-beta-L-erythro-, -alpha-L-threo-, and -beta-L-threo-hex-5-enopyranosides. The configuration and conformation of all products are evaluated in depth on the basis of (1)H and (13)C NMR data. Factors determining conformational energy in 4-O-protected-3-azido-2,3,6,-trideoxy-hex-5-enopyranosides are discussed.

Abstract
The development of two novel ring conversions of sugar derivatives is described. The first is an efficient conversion of 5-enopyranosides and 6-O-acetyl-5-enopyranosides to the corresponding substituted cyclohexanones mediated by a catalytic amount of palladium dichloride. After a survey of various substrates, the reaction was confirmed to be general and useful. Syntheses of bioactive compounds utilizing this method were therefore investigated. Cyclophellitol, which is a potent beta-glucoidase inhibitor, and its diastereoisomer were efficiently synthesized. Furthermore, novel synthesis of all enantiomerically pure diastereoisomers of inositol starting with 6-O-acetyl-5-enopyranosides was investigated. Good accessibility of these enantiomerically pure inositol diastereoisomers results in the efficient syntheses of D-myo-inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate and D-myo-inositol 1,3,4,5-tetrakisphosphate. The second investigation involved novel and efficient conversion of D-glycono-1,5-lactones into the corresponding L-sugars. The important intermediate, delta-hydroxyalkoxamate, was provided by a practical alkoxyamination of D-glycono-1,5-lactones mediated by Me3Al. In contrast to the preparation of beta-lactam skeletons from beta-hydroxyalkoxamates, the cyclization of delta-hydroxyalkoxamates under Mitsunobu conditions resulted in O-alkylation rather than N-alkylation. It is noteworthy that delta-hydroxyalkoxamates derived from D-mannono-1,5-lactones afforded the O-alkylation product in 91% yield. No N-alkylation product was detected in this case. These O-cyclized oximes, in which the inversion of the configuration at C5 was secured, were efficiently converted into L-sugars.

Abstract
Synthesis of six inositol stereoisomers was successfully carried out via conduritol intermediates prepared from myo-inositol. Dihydroxylation and epoxidation followed by ring opening of the conduritol B, C and F derivatives gave epi-, allo-, muco-, neo-, DL-chiro- and scyllo-inositol. The cis-inositol derivative, which may not be prepared by this approach, was synthesized in 5 steps via 2-O-benzoyl-myo-inositol orthoformate as the key intermediate.
