Abstract
Glycoluril-based molecular clips incorporating tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) sidewalls have been synthesized through different strategies with the aim of investigating the effect of electrochemical and spatial properties for binding neutral accepting guests. We have in particular focused our study on the spacer extension in order to tune the intramolecular TTF···TTF distance within the clip and, consequently, the redox behavior of the receptor. Carried out at different concentrations in solution, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical experiments provide evidence of mixed-valence and/or π-dimer intermolecular interactions between TTF units from two closed clips. The stepwise oxidation of each molecular clip involves an electrochemical mechanism with three one-electron processes and two charge-coupled chemical reactions, a scheme which is supported by electrochemical simulations. The fine-tunable π-donating ability of the TTF units and the cavity size allow to control binding interaction towards a strong electron acceptor such as tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) or a weaker electron acceptor such as 1,3-dinitrobenzene (m-DNB).

Abstract
The synthesis of bis-TTF 1 and tris-TTF 2, linked by an ethenyl spacer, is described using new useful Wittig-type reagents with the introduction of phosphonate functionality on 1,3-dithiole and TTF frameworks. Electrochemical and spectroscopic studies show intramolecular electronic interactions between conjugated TTF units.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of new modified tetrathiafulvalenes (TTF), the S-position isomers of BEDT-TTF and EDT-TTF, are described. The synthetic strategy presented in this work is based on an efficient and unprecedented two-step sequence for the conversion of a vicinal bis(hydroxymethyl) functionality into a disulfide ring. Different routes are discussed in terms of efficiency for the synthesis of the symmetric S-position isomer of BEDT-TTF and that of EDT-TTF. Their electrochemical properties are combined with data obtained from UV/Vis spectroscopy and orbital calculations, and the electronic influence of peripheral sulfur atoms on the neutral and oxidized species is discussed. The introduction of these outer sulfur atoms at the periphery of the TTF core gives rise to specific intermolecular S...S interactions in the corresponding organic materials. Crystallographic studies of radical cation salts synthesized upon electrocrystallization clearly showed that the network obtained is dictated by the outer sulfur atoms, which are responsible for a characteristic and unprecedented "windmill" array.

Abstract
The synthesis of new S(2)O(4)-crown annelated tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives substituted with one terminal thiol group is described. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of these compounds have been assembled on gold and platinum surfaces, the latter substrate giving improved quality films. SAMs of TTF derivative 16b are the most stable of those we have studied. Electrochemical data for SAMs of 5a, 5b, 8, 16a, and 16b in acetonitrile reveal two reversible one-electron waves, typical of the TTF system; the current increased linearly with scan rate, indicating a surface wave response. SAMs of 8, 16a, and 16b exhibited an electrochemical response in aqueous electrolytes, which was observed between 50 and 100 cycles. Moreover, if the potential scanned was limited to the first TTF oxidation, the cyclic voltammetry response was observed for at least 1000 cycles. Metal complexation by the crown ionophore of the SAMs in acetonitrile has been monitored by a positive shift in the first oxidation potential of the TTF unit (maximum DeltaE(1)(1/2) = 80 mV for Ag(+)). We also report the X-ray crystal structure of TTF-crown derivative 21 bearing two hydroxymethyl substituents, synthesized during the course of this work. The structure is characterized by infinite chains of molecules linked by strong intrachain hydrogen bonds between the terminal hydroxy groups.
