Correlation functions and power spectra of Doppler response signals in ultrasonic medical applications

Ultrasound Doppler methods are widely used in clinical practice as prospective investigational tool to study the vascular system and soft biological tissues. Meanwhile, the most general relationship between the power Doppler spectra, spectral characteristics of the scattering fluctuations and the probing ultrasound field parameters for some clinical implementations are still unexplored. Based upon the continuum model of scattering inhomogeneities, a set of the closed-form expressions for the correlation functions and the spectra of Doppler response of soft tissues and blood have been derived. The influence of the correlation among inhomogeneities and the diffusion processes on the Doppler power spectra formed by stationary flows have been examined. Computer simulations of Doppler spectra were performed for different values of correlation radius and diffusion coefficient. With simulation results the effects of the correlation among inhomogeneities and the diffusion processes on the spectral width and mean frequency are established and discussed in respect to turbulent flows. Closed-form expressions for correlation functions and Doppler spectra for the vibrational sonoelastography technique for visualizing malignant tumors in tissues have been derived. Based on the peculiarities of the obtained Doppler spectra, it is shown that the differentiation of soft tissues with respect to the amplitude value of constrained oscillations is feasible. The expressions were derived for the cases of non-stationary accelerated blood movement. It has been found that the frequency dependence reveals solely at a finite time of observation and depends on the initial phase of the accelerated movement.

Sample volume shape for pulsed-flow velocity estimation using a linear array

Various definitions of the sample volume (SV) shape have been proposed, but they are mostly based on transducers with axisymmetrical geometry. We have defined the SV as that spatial region in which scatterers contribute a component to the total gated received-signal energy above a defined threshold. This definition is consistent with modern pulsed transducer arrays and accounts for the need to impose a signal/noise threshold. Based on this definition, SVs for a typical linear phased-array transducer were simulated using custom-designed software. The effects of different transmit pulses, receive gates, apertures, SV depths and lateral foci were studied using a one-dimensional (1-D) beam-forming array, with a fixed lens in the elevation direction. Based on a simplified method of analysis, the features of the beam-steered SV are qualitatively similar to those of the nonsteered SV, when compared at the same beam-flow angle. These studies have helped provide a clearer understanding of the manner in which the SV energy distribution is affected by various parameters. The results can have potentially significant implications in the use of ultrasound (US) for blood velocity estimation, specifically with respect to locating the SV within the blood vessel and the origin of the velocity spectrum.

Performance testing of medical echo/Doppler equipment

This paper describes the methods applied in a software package developed by the authors for use in a performance testing protocol for medical ultrasound equipment. The history of performance testing of medical ultrasound equipment is briefly reviewed. This paper is confined to the testing of performance of usage aspects, i.e. imaging performance and Doppler velocity estimation performance. Simple test objects are used which have a long life expectancy. The tests performed both in fundamental and in (tissue) harmonic modes when applicable are spatial resolution, contrast sensitivity, and clutter. The concept of a computational observer is used to define the lesion signal-to-noise ratio and the tissue-to-clutter ratio. Further imaging performance features are penetration depth, slice thickness and geometric conformity of display. Pulsed Doppler velocity measurement features tested are: sensitivity, depth and 3D size of the sample volume, velocity measurement, channel separation. The whole performance measurement protocol as well as the quantitative measurements in the digitized images are implemented in software, together with the graphs and data obtained from the measurements.
