Spatial frequency discrimination: a comparison of achromatic and chromatic conditions

Validation of the open biological negative image set for a Portuguese population: Comparing Japanese and Portuguese samples and an exploration of low-order visual properties of the stimuli

Recently, Shirai and Watanabe Royal Society Open Science, 9(1), 211128 (2022) developed OBNIS (Open Biological Negative Image Set), a comprehensive database containing images (primarily animals but also fruits, mushrooms, and vegetables) that visually elicit disgust, fear, or neither. OBNIS was initially validated for a Japanese population. In this article, we validated the color version of OBNIS for a Portuguese population. In study 1, the methodology of the original article was used. This allowed direct comparisons between the Portuguese and Japanese populations. Aside from a few emotional classification mismatches between disgust, fear, or neither-related images, we found that arousal and valence relate distinctively in both populations. In contrast to the Japanese sample, the Portuguese reported increased arousal for more positive valenced stimuli, suggesting that OBNIS images elicit positive emotions in the Portuguese population. These results showed important cross-cultural differences regarding OBNIS. In study 2, a methodological change was introduced: instead of the three classification options used originally (fear, disgust, or neither), six basic emotions were used (fear, disgust, sadness, surprise, anger, happiness), and a "neither" option, to confirm whether some of the originally "neither-related" images are associated with positive emotions (happiness). Additionally, the low-order visual properties of images (luminosity, contrast, chromatic complexity, and spatial frequency distribution) were explored due to their important role in emotion-related research. A fourth image group associated with happiness was found in the Portuguese sample. Moreover, image groups present differences regarding the low-order visual characteristics, which are correlated with arousal and valence ratings, highlighting the importance of controlling such characteristics in emotion-related research.

Columnar organization of mid-spectral and end-spectral hue preferences in human visual cortex

Multiple color-selective areas have been described in visual cortex, in both humans and non-human primates. In macaques, hue-selective columns have been reported in several areas. In V2, it has been proposed that such hue-selective columns are mapped so as to mirror the order of wavelength through the visible spectrum, within thin-type stripes. Other studies have suggested a neural segregation of mid-spectral vs. end-spectral hue preferences (e.g. red and blue vs. green and yellow), within thin- and thick-type stripes, respectively. This latter segregation could reduce the spatial 'blur' due to chromatic aberration in the encoding of fine spatial details in the thick-type stripes. To distinguish between these and related models, we tested the organization of hue preferences in human visual cortex using fMRI at high spatial resolution. We used a high field (7T) scanner in humans (n = 7), measuring responses to four independent hues, including end-spectral (i.e. red-gray and blue-gray) and mid-spectral (i.e. green-gray and yellow-gray) isoluminant gratings, and also relative to achromatic luminance-varying (control) stimuli. In each subject, thin- and thick-type columns in V2 and V3 were localized using an independent set of stimuli and scans. We found distinct hue-selective differences along the dimension of mid-vs. end-spectral hues, in striate and early extrastriate visual cortex. First, as reported previously in macaques, V1 responded more strongly to end-spectral hues, compared to mid-spectral hues. Second, the color-selective thin-type stripes in V2 and V3 showed a greater response to end- and mid-spectral hues, relative to luminance-varying gratings. Third, thick-type stripes in V2/V3 showed a significantly stronger response to mid-spectral (compared to end-spectral) hues. Fourth, in the higher-tier color-selective area in occipital temporal cortex (n = 4), responses to all four hues were statistically equivalent to each other. These results suggest that early visual cortex segregates the processing of mid-vs. end-spectral hues, perhaps to counter the challenging optical constraint of chromatic aberration.

Theoretical Implications on Visual (Color) Representation and Cytochrome Oxidase Blobs

The rich concentration of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase (CO) blobs in the V1 (striate) primate visual cortex has never been explained. Although the distribution of CO blobs provided a persuasive example of columnar structure in the V1, there are contradictions about the existence of hypercolumns. Since photoreceptors and other retinal cells process and convey basically external visible photonic signals, it suggests that one of the most important tasks of early visual areas is to represent these external visible color photonic signals during visual perception. This representation may occur essentially in CO-rich blobs of the V1. Here we suggest that the representation of external visible photon signals (i.e. visual representation) can be the most energetic allocation process in the brain, which is reasonably performed by the highest density neuron al V1 areas and mitochondrial-rich cytochrome oxidases. It is also raised that the functional unit for phosphene induction can be linked to small clusters of Co —rich blobs in V1. We present some implications about distinction between the physics of visible photons/ light and its subjective experiences. We also discuss that amodal and modal visual completions are possible due to the visual perception induced visualization when the brain tries to interpret the unseen parts of objects or represent features of perceived objects that are not actually visible. It is raised that continuously produced intrinsic bioluminescent photons from retinal lipid peroxidation may have functional role in initial development of retinogeniculate pathways as well as initial appearance topographic organizations of V1 before birth. Finally, the metaphysical framework is the extended version of dual-aspect monism (DAMv) that has the least number of problems compared to all other frameworks and hence it is better than the materialism that is currently dominant in science.

Contrast detection learning improves visual contrast sensitivity of cat

Psychological studies on human subjects show that contrast detection learning promote learner's sensitivity to visual stimulus contrast. The underlying neural mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, three cats (Felis catus) were trained to perform monocularly a contrast detection task by two-alternative forced choice method. The perceptual ability of each cat improved remarkably with learning as indicated by a significantly increased contrast sensitivity to visual stimuli. The learning effect displayed an evident specificity to the eye employed for learning but could partially transfer to the na?ve eye, prompting the possibility that contrast detection learning might cause neural plasticity before and after the information from both eyes are merged in the visual pathway. Further, the contrast sensitivity improvement was evident basically around the spatial frequency (SF) used for learning, which suggested that contrast detection learning effect showed, to some extent, a SF specificity. This study indicates that cat exhibits a property of contrast detection learning similar to human subjects and can be used as an animal model for subsequent investigations on the neural correlates that mediate learning-induced contrast sensitivity improvement in humans.

Spatial frequencies or emotional effects?

The influence of the emotional attributes of a visual scene on early perception processes remains a key question in contemporary affective neurosciences. The International Affective Picture System (IAPS; Lang et al., 2005) was developed to provide a set of standardized stimuli for experimental investigations of emotional processes. These stimuli have been widely used in brain activity investigations to study the influence of valence and/or arousal on visual processing. However, visual perception is strongly influenced by the physical properties of the images shown, especially their spatial frequency content, an aspect that has been unexpectedly neglected at large. In this study, we examine the complete set of IAPS with a discrete wavelet transform to highlight relations between the energy in different spatial frequencies and the emotional features of the pictures. Our results showed that these associations are weak when the complete dataset is considered, but for selected subsets of pictures, clear differences are present in both affective and spatial frequency content. The IAPS remains a powerful tool to explore emotional processing, but we strongly suggest that researchers use subsets of images that are controlled for the energy of their spatial frequencies when investigating emotional influence on visual processing.

Appearance of enhanced tissue features in narrow-band endoscopic imaging

This study was performed to examine the usefulness of medical endoscopic imaging utilizing narrow-band illumination. The contrast between the vascular pattern and the adjacent mucosa of the underside of the human tongue was measured using five narrow-band illuminations and three broadband illuminations. The results demonstrate that the pathological features of a vascular pattern are dependent on the center wavelength and the bandwidth of illumination. By utilizing narrow-band illumination of 415+/-30 nm, the contrast of the capillary pattern in the superficial layer was markedly improved. This is an important benefit that is difficult to obtain with ordinary broadband illumination. The appearances of capillary patterns on color images were evaluated for three sets of filters. The narrow, band imaging (NBI) filter set (415+/-30 nm, 445+/-30 nm, 500+/-30 nm) was selected to achieve the preferred appearance of the vascular patterns for clinical tests. The results of clinical tests in colonoscopy and esophagoscopy indicated that NBI will be useful as a supporting method for observation of the endoscopic findings of early cancer.
