Simulation analysis of receptive-field size of retinal horizontal cells by ionic current model

The size of the receptive field of retinal horizontal cells changes with the state of dark/light adaptation. We have used a mathematical model to determine how changes in the membrane conductance affect the receptive-field properties of horizontal cells. We first modeled the nonlinear membrane properties of horizontal cells based on ionic current mechanisms. The dissociated horizontal cell model reproduced the voltage–current (V–I) relationships for various extracellular glutamate concentrations measured in electrophysiological studies. Second, a network horizontal cell model was also described, and it reproduced theV–Irelationship observedin vivo. The network model showed a bell-shaped relationship between the receptive-field size and constant glutamate concentration. The simulated results suggest that the calcium current is a candidate for the bell-shaped length constant relationship.

Storage for free: a surprising property of a simple gain-control model of motion aftereffects

If a motion aftereffect (MAE) for given adaptation conditions has a duration T s, and the eyes are closed after adaptation during a waiting period tw=T s before testing, an unexpected MAE of a 'residual' duration TrT s is experienced. This effect is called 'storage' and it is often quantified by a storage factor sigma=TrT/T, which can reach values up to about 0.7-0.8. The phenomenon and its name have invited explanations in terms of inhibition of recovery during darkness. We present a model based on the opposite idea, that an effective test stimulus quickens recovery relative to darkness or other ineffective test stimuli. The model is worked out in mathematical detail and proves to explain 'storage' data from the literature, on the static MAE (sMAE: an MAE experienced for static test stimuli). We also present results of a psychophysical experiment with moving random pixel arrays, quantifying storage phenomena both for the sMAE and the dynamic MAE (dMAE: an MAE experienced for a random dynamic noise test stimulus). Storage factors for the dMAE are lower than for the sMAE. Our model also gives an excellent description of these new data on storage of the dMAE. The term 'storage' might therefore be a misnomer. If an effective test stimulus influences all direction tuned motion sensors indiscriminately and thus speeds up equalization of gains, one gets the storage phenomenon for free.

Light adaptation and color opponency of horizontal cells in the turtle retina

Chromaticity-type (C-type) horizontal cells of the turtle retina receive antagonistic inputs from cones of different spectral types, and therefore their response to background illumination is expected to reflect light adaptation of the cones and the interactions between their antagonistic inputs. Our goal was to study the behavior of C-type horizontal cells during background illumination and to evaluate the role of wavelength in background adaptation. The photoresponses of C-type horizontal cells were recorded intracellularly in the everted eyecup preparation of the turtleMauremys caspicaduring chromatic background illuminations. The voltage range of operation was either reduced or augmented, depending upon the wavelengths of the background and of the light stimuli, while the sensitivity to light was decreased by any background. The response–intensity curves were shifted to brighter intensities and became steeper as the background lights were made brighter regardless of wavelength. Comparing the effects of cone iso-luminant backgrounds on the Red/Green C-type horizontal cells indicated that background desensitization in these cells could not solely reflect background adaptation of cones but also depend upon response compression/expansion and changes in synaptic transmission. This leads to wavelength dependency of background adaptation in C-type horizontal cells, that is expressed as increased light sensitivity (smaller threshold elevation) and improved suprathreshold contrast detection when the wavelengths of the background and light stimuli were chosen to exert opponent effects on membrane potential.

Lower-level visual processing and models of light adaptation

Before there was a formal discipline of psychology, there were attempts to understand the relationship between visual perception and retinal physiology. Today, there is still uncertainty about the extent to which even very basic behavioral data (called here candidates for lower-level processing) can be predicted based upon retinal processing. Here, a general framework is proposed for developing models of lower-level processing. It is argued that our knowledge of ganglion cell function and retinal mechanisms has advanced to the point where a model of lower-level processing should include a testable model of ganglion cell function. This model of ganglion cell function, combined with minimal assumptions about the role of the visual cortex, forms a model of lower-level processing. Basic behavioral and physiological descriptions of light adaptation are reviewed, and recent attempts to model lower-level processing are discussed.

Spatial and temporal properties of cat horizontal cells after prolonged dark adaptation

We studied the change of spatial and temporal response properties for cat horizontal (H-) cells during prolonged dark adaptation. H-cell responses were recorded intracellularly in the optically intact, in vivo eye. Spatial and temporal properties were first measured for light-adapted H-cells, followed by a period of dark adaptation, after which the same measurements were repeated. During dark adaptation threshold sensitivity was measured at regular intervals. Stable, long lasting recordings allowed us to measure changes of sensitivity and receptive field characteristics for adaptation periods up to 45 min. Although cat H-cells showed no signs of dark suppression or light sensitization, they remained insensitive in the scotopic range, even after prolonged dark adaptation. Absolute thresholds were in the low mesopic range. The sensitization was brought about by a shift from cone to rod input, and by substantial increases of both spatial and temporal integration upon dark adaptation. The length constant in the light-adapted state was on average about 4 deg. After dark adaptation it was up to a factor of three larger, with a median ratio of 1.85. Response delays, latencies and durations for (equal amplitude) threshold flash responses substantially increased during dark adaptation.
