Influence of the luminance and opponent chromatic channels on stereopsis with random-dot stereograms

Binocular luster elicited by isoluminant chromatic stimuli relies on mechanisms similar to those in the achromatic case

The phenomenon of binocular luster can be evoked by simple dichoptic center-surround stimuli showing a luminance contrast difference between the eyes. Previous findings support the idea that this phenomenon is mediated by a low-level conflict mechanism that integrates the monocular signals from different types of contrast detector cells. Also, isoluminant stimuli with different chromatic contrasts between eyes can trigger sensations of luster. Here, we investigate whether the lustrous impression in such purely chromatic stimuli depends on interocular contrast differences and in particular on interocular contrast polarity pairings in a similar way as in the achromatic case. In our experiments, we measured the magnitude of the lustrous response using a series of isoluminant dichoptic center-ring-surround stimuli with varying ring width whose chromatic properties were varied along the red-green and blue-yellow cardinal directions. The trends in the data were very similar to those of our former study with achromatic stimuli, indicating similar mechanisms in both cases. The empirical luster data could also be predicted fairly well by a chromatic version of our interocular conflict model (with overall R2 values between 0.577 and 0.639), for which two different receptive field models were used, simulating the behavior of color-sensitive double-opponent cells in V1.

Upper disparity limit after LASIK

We evaluate the effect of the emmetropization technique LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) on stereoscopic vision. For this, we used a mirror stereoscope to measure the upper disparity limit D(max) before (with best correction) and after LASIK for 30 patients. The results show that the upper disparity limit declines from 41.1 min of arc on average to 31.3 min of arc after LASIK, being significant in 83% of the patients. This deterioration is significantly correlated with an increase in the postsurgical interocular differences in higher-order aberrations, corneal asphericity, and presurgical anisometropia. New ablation algorithms should minimize interocular differences in order to improve binocular visual performance.

Binocular interactions in random chromatic changes at isoluminance

To examine the type of chromatic interactions at isoluminance in the phenomenon of binocular vision, I have determined simple visual reaction times (VRT) under three observational conditions (monocular left, monocular right, and binocular) for different chromatic stimuli along random color axes at isoluminance (simultaneous L-, M-, and S-cone variations). Upper and lower boundaries of probability summation as well as the binocular capacity coefficient were estimated with observed distributions of reaction times. The results were not consistent with the notion of independent chromatic channels between eyes, suggesting the existence of excitatory and inhibitory binocular interactions at suprathreshold isoluminance conditions.

Simple device for quantifying the influence of halos after lasik surgery

We present a simple device (called a halometer) to detect and quantify the phenomenon of halos after certain surgical procedures, such as refractive surgery. The task of the subject consists basically of discriminating, after dark adaptation, a small light source around a central high-luminance stimulus. The device, which is connected to a computer, provides a disturbance index to measure the effect of halos on the observer's vision. Tested with normal subjects and patients after LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) surgery, this apparatus proved sufficiently sensitive to quantify the halos in subjects who had undergone surgery.

Conditions under which stereopsis and motion perception are blind

We describe modified random-dot stereograms in which the corresponding elements differ from non-corresponding elements in colour, size, and luminance. Despite these visible differences between the elements, depth perception collapses when the spatially integrated luminous flux is similar for the corresponding and non-corresponding elements. Our results suggest that a low-pass spatial filter precedes the mechanism that recognises disparity. A similar phenomenon is observed for the perception of coherent motion in random-dot kinematograms. Our modified stereograms and kinematograms may find other uses when experimenters wish to study the contribution of colour to visual processes and require a method of eliminating edge artifacts.

Maximum disparity with acuvue bifocal contact lenses with changes in illumination

PURPOSE

To assess the visual performance of Acuvue bifocal contact lenses at different illumination levels using a stereoscopic parameter, the maximum disparity. We compare the results with those for progressive spectacle lenses.

METHODS

We used a modified Wheatstone stereoscope and random-dot stereograms (RDS) as tests. The maximum disparity was measured for each observer at different luminance levels.

RESULTS

Maximum disparities did not show statistically significant differences for a wide range of luminance levels with contact lenses. The maximum disparities found when some contact-lens users wore progressive spectacle lenses were similar.

CONCLUSIONS

The results show that the Acuvue bifocal lenses offer good performance for a near visual task, in this case the maximum disparity, for changes in illumination and are similar to that with progressive spectacle lenses.

Impact of induced aniseikonia on stereopsis with random-dot stereogram

In this work, we evaluate the impact of induced aniseikonia on stereopsis. For this, we determined the disparity range (maximum disparity), a parameter related to the size of the physical region that can be perceived stereoscopically. A significant decline in the disparity range was detected with aniseikonia induced by size lenses of 3% for five of the seven observers tested; 5% was necessary for the other two observers. The data indicate the influence of aniseikonia in stereopsis and the need to minimize such impact. These results may be useful in surgical processes such as the correction of pseudophakic patients and refractive surgery in which aniseikonia can be induced to alter the binocular function of the patient.

Binocular summation of chromatic changes as measured by visual reaction time

We determined visual reaction times to monocular and binocular changes in the luminance of isochromatic stimuli and to monocular and binocular changes in the color of isoluminant stimuli. Two isoluminant color changes were tested: chromatic variations along the red-green axis of Boynton's (1986) two-stage color vision model and chromatic variations along the yellow-blue axis of the same model. The results indicate a greater degree of binocular summation for luminance change than for color change. This result was largely independent of the motor component of reaction time.

Changes in stereoscopic depth perception caused by decentration of spectacle lenses

The effect that decentered spectacle (ophthalmic) lenses exert on depth perception has been studied, evaluating stereopsis through the disparity range (maximum horizontal disparity) for random-dot stereograms (RDS). The results show that variations in fusional convergence due to increments of decentration can diminish the stereopsis in observers, reducing the region within which stereoscopic correspondence can take place. Decreases in disparity ranges were found for vertical and horizontal prismatic effects, although the prismatic effect necessary for this was less in the vertical case. A decreased disparity range has also been confirmed with figural-stimuli stereograms and using prisms for generating the prismatic effects.

Associated phoria in relation to stereopsis with random-dot stereograms

In the present work, we use random-dot stereograms to test a possible relationship between associated phoria and stereopsis. We determined, using a modified constant-stimulus method, the disparity range that indicates the maximum range at which stereoscopic correspondence can be achieved. A total of 27 observers took part in the experiment. The value of the disparity range as a function of the associated phoria (measured with a Mallet unit) seems to indicate that greater associated phoria (fixation disparity) correlates with a deterioration in stereoscopic vision, reducing the disparity range and therefore the space region in which stereoscopic vision can be attained.
