Abstract
Past research indicates that observers rely strongly on flow-based and object-based motion information for determining egomotion or direction of heading. More recently, it has been shown that they also rely on displacement information that does not induce motion perception. As yet, little is known regarding the specific displacement cues that are used for heading estimation. In Experiment 1a, we show that the accuracy of heading estimates increases, as more displacement cues are available. In Experiments 1b and 2, we show that observers rely mostly on the displacement of objects and geometric cues for estimating heading. In Experiment 3, we show that the accuracy of detecting changes in heading when displacement cues are used is low. The results are interpreted in terms of two systems that may be available for estimating heading, one relying on movement information and providing navigational mechanisms, the other relying on displacement information and providing navigational planning and orienting mechanisms.

Abstract
To steer a course through the world, people are almost entirely dependent on visual information, of which a key component is optic flow. In many models of locomotion, heading is described as the fundamental control variable; however, it has also been shown that fixating points along or near one's future path could be the basis of an efficient control solution. Here, the authors aim to establish how well observers can pinpoint instantaneous heading and path, by measuring their accuracy when looking at these features while traveling along straight and curved paths. The results showed that observers could identify both heading and path accurately (approximately 3 degrees ) when traveling along straight paths, but on curved paths they were more accurate at identifying a point on their future path (approximately 5 degrees ) than indicating their instantaneous heading (approximately 13 degrees ). Furthermore, whereas participants could track changes in the tightness of their path, they were unable to accurately track the rate of change of heading. In light of these results, the authors suggest it is unlikely that heading is primarily used by the visual system to support active steering.

Abstract
Self-motion through a three-dimensional array of objects creates a radial flow pattern on the retina. We superimposed a simulated object moving in depth on such a flow pattern to investigate the effect of the flow pattern on judgments of both the time to collision (TTC) with an approaching object and the trajectory of that object. Our procedure allowed us to decouple the direction and speed of simulated self motion-in-depth (MID) from the direction and speed of simulated object MID. In Experiment 1 we found that objects with the same closing speed were perceived to have a higher closing speed when self-motion and object-motion were in the same direction and a lower closing speed when they were in the opposite direction. This effect saturated rapidly as the ratio between the speeds of self-motion and object-motion was increased. In Experiment 2 we found that the perceived direction of object-MID was shifted towards the focus of expansion of the flow pattern. In Experiments 3 and 4 we found that the erroneous biases in perceived speed and direction produced by simulated self-motion were significantly reduced when binocular information about MID was added. These findings suggest that the large body of research that has studied motion perception using stationary observers has limited applicability to situations in which both the observer and the object are moving.

Abstract
Egon Brunswik argued that psychological processes are adapted to environmental properties. He proposed the method of representative design to capture these processes and advocated that psychology be a science of organism-environment relations. Representative design involves randomly sampling stimuli from the environment or creating stimuli in which environmental properties are preserved. This departs from systematic design. The authors review the development of representative design, examine its use in judgment and decision-making research, and demonstrate the effect of design on research findings. They suggest that some of the practical difficulties associated with representative design may be overcome with modern technologies. The importance of representative design in psychology and the implications of this method for ecological approaches to cognition are discussed.

Abstract
When human observers move forward and rotate their eyes, a complex pattern of light flows across the retina. This pattern is referred to as retinal flow. A model has been proposed to explain how humans perceive their direction of self-movement (or heading) from (1) static depth, (2) direction of image motion, and (3) whether image velocity undergoes acceleration or deceleration (Wang & Cutting, 1999). However, findings from past research in which sparse or minimalist stimuli were used have suggested that not all of the information to which participants are sensitive is captured within the scope of this model. In particular it has been suggested that the magnitude or size of image velocity change may be of significance beyond simply whether image velocity could be categorized as speeding up (i.e., accelerating) or slowing down (i.e., decelerating). In two experiments, the influence of this factor on heading judgments under minimal conditions was investigated. Evidence was found in support of the idea that the rate of image velocity change can influence judgments of the direction of self-movement in minimalist conditions.

Abstract
Time to contact (TTC) is specified optically by tau, and studies suggest that observers are sensitive to this information. However, TTC judgements also are influenced by other sources of information, including pictorial depth cues. Therefore, it is useful to identify these sources of information and to determine whether and how their effects combine when multiple sources are available. We evaluated the effect of five depth cues on TTC judgements. Results indicate that relative size, height in field, occlusion, and motion parallax influence TTC judgements. When multiple cues are available, an integration (rather than selection) strategy is used. Finally, the combined effects of multiple cues are not always consistent with a strict additive model and may be task dependent.

Abstract
Gustave Caillebotte was a painter, a collector of some of his colleagues' most renowned works, and a major force in the creation of the late 19th century French Impressionist canon. Six studies are presented as a naturalistic investigation of the effects of mere exposure to images in his collection and to those matched to them. The probabilities of cultural exposure to the 132 stimulus images were indexed by the frequencies of their separate appearances in Cornell University library books--a total of 4,232 times in 980 different books. Across the studies, adult preferences were correlated with differences in image frequencies, but not with recognition, complexity, or prototypicality judgments; children's preferences were not correlated with frequency. Prior cultural exposure also interacted with experimental exposure in predictable ways. The results suggest that mere exposure helps to maintain an artistic canon.

Abstract
Computer-generated sequences simulated observer movement toward 10 randomly placed poles, 1 moving and 9 stationary. When observers judged their direction of movement, or heading, they used 3 related invariants: The (a) convergence and (b) decelerating divergence of any 2 poles specified that heading was to the outside of the nearer pole, and the (c) crossover of 2 poles specified that heading was to the outside of the farther pole. With all poles stationary, the field of 45 pairwise movements yielded a coherent specification of heading. With I pole moving with respect to the others, however, the field could yield an incoherent heading solution. Such incoherence was readily detectable; similar pole motion leading to coherent flow, however, was less readily detectable.

Abstract
In two experiments, viewers judged heading from displays simulating locomotion through tree-filled environments, with gaze off to the side. They marked their heading with a mouse-controlled probe at three different depths. When simulated eye or head rotation generally exceeded 0.5 deg/sec, there was reliable curvature in perceived paths toward the fixated object. This curvature, however, was slight even with rotation rates as great as 2.6 deg/sec. Best-fit paths to circular arcs had radii of 1.8 km or greater. In a third experiment, pedestrians walked with matched gaze to the side. Measured curvature in the direction of gaze corresponded to a circular radius of about 1.3 km. Thus, at minimum, vision scientists need not worry about perceived path curvature in this situation; real path curvatures are about the same. However, at present, we can make no claim that the same mechanisms necessarily govern the two results.

Abstract
Rushton et al (1998 Current Biology 8 1191 - 1194) recently showed that walkers wearing displacing prisms follow curved trajectories determined by the perceived direction of their target. This suggests that optic flow is not important in guidance, since flow cues are unaffected by the prism and should allow a straight, direct trajectory. We replicated Rushton et al's result but also tried to rule out an important artifact associated with the prism. Prisms restrict the field of view and, particularly, access to the foreground optic flow that is likely to be important in providing guidance cues. We found that performance did not improve when walkers directed their gaze to include the foreground flow, suggesting that Rushton et al's results were not due to this artifact. On the other hand, performance did reliably improve when subjects reduced their viewing height by crawling towards the target. This improvement may be due to coarsening of the visual texture or to increased salience of alignment and motion-parallax cues. Whatever its cause, the improvement demonstrates that guidance is not determined only by perceived target direction and that, under some conditions, flow may be important.

Abstract
Steering toward a target can be controlled by equalizing the time-to-closure of the angle between the target and the direction of locomotion and the time-to-passage of the observer by the target. Two experiments required observers to steer through a computer-simulated environment toward a target depicted as either a floating cross that did not optically expand, a floating sphere that optically expanded or a grounded post that optically expanded. Experiment 1 revealed better performance in the post and sphere conditions, suggesting that steering is influenced by local optical expansion but not by perceived spatial target location or distance. Experiment 2 revealed differences in steering behavior between target types that suggested observers attempted to equalize time-to-closure and time-to-passage.

Abstract
A study of eye movements during simulated travel toward a grove of four stationary trees revealed that observers looked most at pairs of trees that converged or decelerated apart. Such pairs specify that one's direction of travel, called heading, is to the outside of the near member of the pair. Observers looked at these trees more than those that accelerated apart; such pairs do not offer trustworthy heading information. Observers also looked at gaps between trees less often when they converged or diverged apart, and heading can never be between such pairs. Heading responses were in accord with eye movements. In general, if observers responded accurately, they had looked at trees that converged or decelerated apart; if they were inaccurate, they had not. Results support the notion that observers seek out their heading through eye movements, saccading to and fixating on the most informative locations in the field of view.

Abstract
Observers made systematic heading judgments in two experiments simulating their translation through an environment with only two trees. When those trees converged or decelerated apart, observers tended to follow the invariant information and make heading judgments outside the near member of the pair. When those trees accelerated apart, however, observers tended to follow the heuristic information and make judgments outside the far member, although this result was tempered by the angular separation between the trees and their relative acceleration. The simultaneous existence and use of invariants and heuristics are discussed in terms of different metatheoretical approaches to perception.
