Apparent fineness of stationary compound gratings

A lower bound on the number of mechanisms for discriminating fourth and higher order spatial correlations

Research on single striate cortical neurons has often concentrated on their responses to stimuli defined by two-point correlations. Texture discrimination studies using a relatively small palette of isotrigon textures have indicated that we are sensitive to third and higher-order spatial correlations. To further evaluate the underlying mechanisms of texture discrimination subjects discriminated random binary noise patterns from ten new isotrigon texture types. Factor analysis revealed that as few as three mechanisms may govern the detection of fourth and higher order image structure. This supports the findings of previous studies using different isotrigon textures. The computation of higher-order correlations by the brain is neurophysiologically plausible. The mechanisms identified in this study may represent some short range nonlinear combination of recursive and/or rectifying processes.

Spatial proximity rather than temporal frequency determines the wagon wheel illusion

A rotating disk composed of alternating light and dark segments may give rise to the wagon wheel illusion: a perceptual reversal in rotation direction. Continuously illuminated (eg in daylight) as well as discretely presented (eg stroboscopic or computer-animated) versions of the illusion exist; here, we investigated the discrete version. Prominence of the illusion is commonly believed to depend on temporal frequency of rotation, but frequency effects have been unsystematic across previous experiments. Here, illusion strength is shown instead to lawfully depend on an attraction function of angular displacement between successive frames (experiments 1 and 2). We studied the illusion across a wider range of this factor than previously and as a result obtained unusually strong effects (up to 100% reversal). In two further experiments we showed that this is because the effect of the attraction function on the wagon wheel illusion strength is modulated by a perceived increase in the number of spokes of the wheel, a phenomenon generally known as the frequency doubling illusion. These factors combine to offer a unifying explanation of the wagon wheel illusion, at least under discrete presentation and possibly under continuous presentation conditions as well.

Spatial structure of the frequency doubling illusion

We sought to determine (1) the perceived spatial frequency of flickering sinusoidal gratings as a function of temporal frequency at contrasts down to detection threshold levels, and (2) the influence of two different matching criteria on reported size matches to identify changes in the apparent spatial structure introduced by counterphase flicker. To determine if spatial structure was observable at detection threshold contrasts, we simultaneously measured contrast detection and orientation-identification thresholds of flickering gratings. We then measured the apparent size of flickering grating bars at sub-threshold to supra-threshold contrast levels using two matching criteria: (1) by adjusting the spatial frequency of a stationary comparison grating and (2) by adjusting the distance between two parallel thin lines. For all subjects, contrast detection and orientation-identification thresholds were similar, indicating that sufficient spatial structure is observable at detection threshold to make judgements of local spatially defined features. With increasing flicker rate, the apparent periodicity of low (0.25 and 0.50cpd) spatial frequency test gratings increased. At detection threshold contrast levels and below, all observers reported difficulty in performing the match and results were variable. Size matches using stationary gratings were consistently smaller than those made using the line targets, which is suggestive of distortion in perceived spatial structure at the nodal region of flickering gratings.

Frequency doubling illusion VEPs and automated perimetry in multiple sclerosis

We examined frequency doubling (FD) illusion based automated perimetry (FDT) and dichoptic FD multifocal visual evoked potentials (FDmfVEPs) in Normal and multiple sclerosis (MS) subjects. Contrast thresholds were determined at 17 visual field locations using an FDT perimeter. The stimuli presented to each location were 0.25 cpd gratings presented with rapid (25 Hz) counterphase flicker and thus displayed the spatial FD illusion. Dichoptic mfVEPs were recorded by concurrently stimulating eight regions/eye with FD stimuli presented at 95% contrast. Recordings were obtained from 27 Normal subjects, 26 MS patients who had experienced Optic Neuritis (MSON) and 24 MS patients without a history of ON (MSNON). The FDT thresholds showed enhanced contrast sensitivity for MSON patients (P < 0.0001) but not for MSNON patients. Response amplitudes for the central four regions of the mfVEP stimulus were reduced in both patient groups (P < 0.005). A classification model based upon the FDT thresholds performed at a specificity of 96% for a sensitivity of 97% in MSON patients, but the accuracy (simultaneously largest sensitivities and specificities) was poor (approximately 60%) in MSNON patients. Discriminant models based on the FDT thresholds and FDmfVEPs were able to diagnose more that 90% MSON patients but performed poorly for MSNON patients.

Contrast response of temporally sparse dichoptic multifocal visual evoked potentials

Temporally sparse stimuli have been found to produce larger multifocal visual evoked potentials than rapid contrast-reversal stimuli. We compared the contrast-response functions of conventional contrast-reversing (CR) stimuli and three grades of temporally sparse stimuli, examining both the changes in response amplitude and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). All stimuli were presented dichoptically to normal adult human subjects. One stimulus variant, the slowest pattern pulse, had interleaved monocular and binocular stimuli. Response amplitudes and SNRs were similar for all stimuli at contrast 0.4 but grew faster with increasing contrast for the sparser stimuli. The best sparse stimulus provided an SNR improvement that corresponded to a recording time improvement of 2.6 times relative to that required for contrast reversing stimuli. Multiple regression of log-transformed response metrics characterized the contrast-response functions by fitting power-law relationships. The exponents for the two sparsest stimuli were significantly larger (P < 0.001) than for the CR stimuli, as were the mean response amplitudes and signal-to-noise ratios for these stimuli. The contrast-dependent response enhancement is discussed with respect to the possible influences of rapid retinal contrast gain control, or intracortical and cortico-geniculate feedback.

Effect of spatial waveform on apparent spatial frequency

We examined the effect of spatial waveform on the perceived spatial frequency of a grating target. The luminance profile of 0.5 c/ degrees sinusoidal gratings was modified by either compressive or expansive power functions, and was presented alternately with a true sinusoidal grating. Subjects matched the apparent spatial frequency of the two gratings using a method of adjustment. Both compressive and expansive power functions lowered the perceived spatial frequency of the grating, irrespective of the stimulus contrast. Rectified sine wave gratings were also found to reduce apparent spatial frequency. The magnitude of the spatial frequency shifts with spatial waveform diminished with successive matches, which may represent a change in matching strategy employed by observers. Calculations and a further experiment suggest that judgements of spatial frequency may in part be determined by the separation between edges in a grating.

Comparison of three tests using the frequency doubling illusion to diagnose glaucoma

PURPOSE

The introduction of the FDT perimeter prompted the comparison of three tests employing frequency doubling (FD) stimuli. These measures compared different visual field locations and contrast ranges. Frequency of seeing curves were examined for the method most similar to FDT.

METHODS

For 146 eyes the following were obtained: (i) contrast matches to two suprathreshold FD stimuli (normal subjects, ocular hypertensve suspects, primary open angle glaucoma subjects); (ii) two alternative forced choice (2AFC) thresholds for horizontally versus vertically orientated FD gratings: and (iii) contrast thresholds determined by method of adjustment (MOA) for five different stimulus types.

RESULTS

A model based on the worst of the MOA hemifield thresholds performed best. The suprathreshold contrast matching tests performed worst. Frequency of seeing curves were fitted for the 146 eyes of the 2AFC tests. Although the MOA thresholds were higher than the 2AFC thresholds (for normals mean +/- SE, 8.47 +/- 0.43 dL, P < 0.0000), the best diagnostic concordance was at lower limens (75% or 80% correct) of the fitted frequency of seeing curves.

CONCLUSIONS

There was good diagnostic concordance between the MOA and 2AFC methods although the thresholds were 1.8-fold different on a log-scale. This suggests that the same neural mechanism mediates both thresholds for rapidly flickering, spatially coarse, patterns.

Discriminating isotrigon textures [corrected]

Higher order spatial correlations can capture edge and object relationships. Isotrigon textures are useful for studying our sensitivity to these correlations. We determined human discrimination performance for 18 isotrigon texture types and compared it with outputs from statistical discriminant models. Some of the models employed versions of the Allan Variance in receptive field outputs. Physiologically plausible mechanisms for such calculations are presented. Two discriminant models emulated human performance well, one based upon a global variance measure, and the other based upon a localised variance with an orientation bias. The 18 texture types were also shown to contain characteristic mini-textures.

Isolating the M(y)-cell response in dyslexia using the spatial frequency doubling illusion

The contribution of M(y)-cell activity within a framework of a magnocellular-deficit theory of dyslexia is currently unknown. Twenty-one dyslexic readers and 19 control readers were compared on their threshold detection for the frequency doubling illusion - an index of M(y)-cell activity, coherent motion, and a visual acuity task. The dyslexic group performed more poorly on detection of the frequency doubling illusion and coherent motion compared to the control group, but both groups performed comparably on the visual acuity task. The results from this study indicate that if a magno deficit exists in dyslexia, it may originate at a retinal level at least partly mediated by M(y)-cell abnormalities.

Testing for glaucoma with the spatial frequency doubling illusion

We examined the performance of tests for glaucoma based on the spatial frequency doubling (FD) illusion. Contrast thresholds for seeing the FD illusion in four large visual field regions were measured from 340 subjects who were tested up to seven times over 2 years. Median sensitivities of 91% at specificities of 95% were obtained. Test-retest variability for the worst hemifield thresholds averaged 2.22 db +/- 0.09 S.E. for all tested groups, and significant progression was observed for glaucoma suspects over the seven visits, indicating that tests based on the FD illusion can detect diffuse early glaucomatous loss.
