Abstract
Easy-to-handle N-hydroxyacridinecarbimidoyl chloride hydrochlorides were synthesized as convenient nitrile oxide precursors in the preparation of 3-(acridin-9/2-yl)isoxazole derivatives via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with terminal alkynes, 1,1-dichloroethene, and acrylonitrile. Azirines with an acridin-9/2-yl substituent attached directly or via the 1,2,3-triazole linker to the azirine C2 were also synthesized. The three-membered rings of the acridine-azirine hybrids were found to be resistant to irradiation in the UV/visible boundary region, despite their long-wave absorption at 320-420 nm, indicating that the acridine moiety cannot be used as an antenna to transfer light energy to generate nitrile ylides from azirines for photoclick cycloaddition. The acridine-isoxazole hybrids linked at the C9-C3 or C2-C3 atoms under blue light irradiation underwent the addition of such hydrogen donor solvents, such as, toluene, o-xylene, mesitylene, 4-chlorotoluene, THF, 1,4-dioxane, or methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), to the acridine system to give the corresponding 9-substituted acridanes in good yields. The synthesized acridine-azirine, acridine-isoxazole, and acridane-isoxazole hybrids exhibited cytotoxicity toward both all tested cancer cell lines (HCT 116, MCF7, and A704) and normal cells (WI-26 VA4).

Abstract
Nitrene-transfer reactions are powerful synthetic tools for the direct incorporation of nitrogen atoms into organic molecules. The discovery of novel nitrene-transfer reactions has been dominantly supported not only by improvements in transition-metal catalysts but also by the employment of novel precursors of nitrenoids. Since pioneering work involving the use of organic azides and iminoiodinanes as practical synthetic tools for nitrogen-containing compounds was reported, a new approach using various N-heterocycles containing strain energy or a weak bond has emerged. In this review, we briefly summarize the history of nitrene-transfer chemistry from the viewpoint of its precursors. In particular, the use of N-heterocycles such as 2H-azirines, 1,4,2-dioxazol-5-ones, 1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-ones, isoxazol-5(4H)-ones, and isoxazoles is comprehensively described, showing the recent remarkable progress in this chemistry.

Abstract
A synthesis of 2-diazoacetyl-2 H-azirines was developed starting from 2 H-azirine-2-carbonyl chlorides, generated by Fe(II)-catalyzed isomerization of 5-chloroisoxazoles. 2-Diazoacetyl-2 H-azirines easily undergo reactions characteristic of α-diazo ketones with preservation of the azirine ring. Reactions with hydrohalogenic, carboxylic, and p-toluenesulfonic acids provide novel 1-(3-aryl-2 H-azirin-2-yl)-2-halo- and 2-(R-oxy)ethan-1-ones in good yields. The synthesized 2 H-azirines can offer many possibilities for chemical manipulation in heterocyclic synthesis, due to the presence of highly reactive azirine and the exocyclic C(O)-CHN2 or C(O)-CH2X functionalities, which can show orthogonal or domino reactivity. The synthetic usefulness of the developed building blocks was demonstrated by the preparation of new types of heterocyclic dyads (azirine-oxazole, azirine-pyrazoline, azirine-thiazole, azirine-oxirane, pyrrole-oxazole) as well as an azirine chalcone analogue, 2-azidoacetyl-2 H-azirine, and 2-diazoacetylaziridine derivatives.

Abstract
The first synthesis of pyrroles by Fe(II)-catalyzed isomerization of 4-vinylisoxazoles is reported. 5-Alkoxy, amino, and N,N-dialkylamino-3-aryl/alkyl-4-(2-R-vinyl)isoxazoles afford 2-aryl/alkyl-5-aryl/alkyl/methoxycarbonyl-1H-pyrrol-3-carboxylic acid derivatives typically under mild conditions with cheap and available FeCl2·4H2O as a catalyst. The isomerization of 5-alkoxy/amino-3-arylisoxazoles, bearing unsaturated carbo and heterocyclic substituents at the position 4, gives the corresponding fused pyrrolecarboxylic acid derivatives in high yields. DFT calculations were used to elucidate a probable mechanism of the isomerization and explain the influence of steric congestion of the vinyl moiety on the isomerization pathway.

Abstract
Cyclopenta[b]-pyrrole-2-phosphine oxides 4a and -phosphonates 4b,c are generated by the addition of cyclic enolates derived from ethyl 2-oxo-cyclopentanecarboxylate 2 to phosphorated 2H-azirines 1. However, the addition of enolate derived from acyclic 2-oxo-butanoate 10 to 2H-azirine phosphine oxide 1 led to vinylogous N-acyl-α-aminoalkyl phosphine oxides 12, involving the carbonyl group and the Cα of the keto ester 10. Ring closure of vinylogous derivative 12 in the presence of base afforded pyrrole-2-phosphine oxide 11. The addition of enolates derived from indenone-carboxylate 15 to 2H-azirines 1 led to the formation of functionalized N-substituted 1H-benzo[d]azepine derivatives 17.

These compounds were obtained as single isomers, except in one case. X-ray crystal structures were determined for three derivatives, establishing that the non-classical Wittig reaction leads to the selective synthesis of haloazidoalkenes with (Z)-configuration. The thermolysis of the haloazidoalkenes afforded new 2-halo-2-(tetrazol-5-yl)-2H-azirines in high yields. Thus, the reported synthetic methodologies gave access to important building blocks in organic synthesis, vinyl tetrazoles and 2-halo-2-(tetrazol-5-yl)-2H-azirine derivatives.

Abstract
Strained azirinium ylides derived from 2H-azirines and α-diazoketones under Rh(II)-catalysis can undergo either irreversible ring opening across the N–C2 bond to 2-azabuta-1,3-dienes that further cyclize to 2H-1,4-oxazines or reversibly undergo a 1,5-cyclization to dihydroazireno[2,1-b]oxazoles. Dihydroazireno[2,1-b]oxazoles derived from 3-aryl-2H-azirines and 3-diazoacetylacetone or ethyl diazoacetoacetate are able to cycloadd to acetyl(methyl)ketene generated from 3-diazoacetylacetone under Rh(II) catalysis to give 4,6-dioxa-1-azabicyclo[3.2.1]oct-2-ene and/or 5,7-dioxa-1-azabicyclo[4.3.1]deca-3,8-diene-2-one derivatives. According to DFT calculations (B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p)), the cycloaddition can involve two modes of nucleophilic attack of the dihydroazireno[2,1-b]oxazole intermediate on acetyl(methyl)ketene followed by aziridine ring opening into atropoisomeric oxazolium betaines and cyclization. Azirinium ylides generated from 2,3-di- and 2,2,3-triaryl-substituted azirines give rise to only 2-azabuta-1,3-dienes and/or 2H-1,4-oxazines.

Abstract
3-Aryl-2H-azirines react with acylketenes, generated by thermolysis of 5-arylfuran-2,3-diones, to give bridged 5,7-dioxa-1-azabicyclo[4.4.1]undeca-3,8-diene-2,10-diones and/or ortho-fused 6,6a,12,12a-tetrahydrobis[1,3]oxazino[3,2-a:3',2'-d]pyrazine-4,10-diones. The latter compounds, with a new heterocyclic skeleton, are the result of the coupling of two molecules of azirine and two molecules of acylketene and can be prepared only from 3-aryl-2H-azirines having no electron-withdrawing groups in the aryl substituent. Calculations at the DFT B3LYP/6-31G(d) level for the various routes of bis[1,3]oxazino[3,2-a:3',2'-d]pyrazine skeleton formation revealed a new domino reaction of 3-aryl-2H-azirines occurring in the presence of furandiones: acid-catalyzed dimerization to dihydropyrazine followed by consecutive cycloaddition of the latter to two molecules of acylketenes.

Abstract
The photodenitrogenation of vinyl azides to 2H-azirines by using a photoflow reactor is reported and compared with thermal formation of 2H-azirines. Photochemically, the ring of the 2H-azirines was opened to yield the nitrile ylides, which underwent a [3 + 2]-cycloaddition with 1,3-dipolarophiles. When diisopropyl azodicarboxylate serves as the dipolarophile, 1,3,4-triazoles become directly accessible starting from the corresponding vinyl azide.

Abstract
A simple and efficient selective synthesis of 1H-pyrrole-2-phosphine oxides 3 and -phosphonates 7 by addition of enolates derived from acetyl acetates to 2H-azirinylphosphine oxide 1 and -phosphonate 6 is reported. Nucleophilic addition of enolates derived from diethyl malonate to 2H-azirines 1 and 6 led to the formation of functionalized 2-hydroxy-1H-pyrrole-5-phosphine oxide 9 and -phosphonate 10, while vinylogous α-aminoalkylphosphine oxides 14 and -phosphonate 15 may be obtained from azirines and the enolate derived from diethyl 2-phenylmalonate. Ring closure of vinylogous derivatives 14 and 15 in the presence of base led to the formation of 1,5-dihydro-3-pyrrolin-2-ones containing a phosphine oxide 17 or a phosphonate group 18.
