Organoelement Chemistry of Main-Group Porphyrin Complexes

Investigation of the impact of A-site cation disorder on the structure, magnetic properties, and magnetic entropy change of trisubstituted divalent ions in La0.7(Ba,Ca,Sr)0.3MnO3 manganite

This study investigates the effect of A-site disorder, characterized by the average ionic radius (〈rA〉) and the cation mismatch (σ2), on the structural, magnetic, critical behavior, and magnetic entropy changes in La0.7(Ba,Ca,Sr)0.3MnO3 manganites with trisubstituted Ba, Ca, and Sr. The sol-gel method was used to prepare polycrystalline samples. All series of compounds crystallize in rhombohedral symmetry with the R3̄c space group. A linear relationship between lattice parameters, unit cell volume, and 〈rA〉 was observed. This reveals an unusual behavior in the correlation between 〈rA〉 and σ2 concerning magnetic properties, which is attributed to the complex simultaneous trisubstitution of divalent ions. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were utilized to validate the chemical composition of compounds. All the samples crystallized in rhombohedral symmetry, and the lattice parameters increased continuously with increasing 〈rA〉. A-site disorder causes distortions in the Mn-O bond length and Mn-O-Mn bond angle in the MnO6 octahedral structure, which influences the double-exchange interaction and electronic bandwidth (W). The Curie temperature (TC) increases linearly with increasing W. The critical behavior around TC for all the samples was investigated by determining the values of the critical exponents (β, γ, and δ) using the modified Arrott plot (MAP) method. The estimated critical exponents show that the unconventional model establishes a short-range ferromagnetic order. The maximum magnetic entropy change (-ΔSM) was obtained with the lowest 〈rA〉 and σ2 value. The analysis of the critical behavior and universal curve indicates a second-order phase transition (SOPT) nature for all samples.

C-H Bond Activation by an Antimony(V) Oxo Intermediate Accessed through Electrochemical Oxidation of Antimony(III) Tetrakis(thiocyano)corrole

A new class of antimony(III) corroles has been described. The photophysical properties of these newly synthesized tetrakis(thiocyano)corrolatoantimony(III) derivatives having four SCN groups on the bipyrrole unit of corrole are drastically altered compared to their β-unsubstituted corrolatoantimony(III) analogues. The UV-vis and emission spectra of tetrakis(thiocyano)corrolatoantimony(III) derivatives are significantly red-shifted (roughly 30-40 nm) in comparison with their β-unsubstituted corrolatoantimony(III) derivatives. The Q bands are significantly strengthened. The intensity of the most prominent Q band is roughly 70% that of the Soret band and absorbs strongly at the far-red region, i.e., at 700-720 nm. These molecules emit light in the near-infrared region (700-900 nm). Tetrakis(thiocyano)corrolatoantimony(III) undergoes electrochemical anodic oxidation to form SbV═O species, which facilitates electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the activation of benzylic C-H to produce benzoic acid selectively. Under optimized conditions, SbIII-corrole@NF (NF = nickel foam) required an overpotential of 380 mV to reach a 50 mA cm-2 current density, comparable with those of other transition-metal-based complexes. On the other hand, replacing the anodic OER with benzyl alcohol oxidation lowered the required potential by 150 mV (at 300 mA cm-2) to improve the energy efficiency of the electrochemical process.

Metallotexaphyrins as MRI-Active Catalytic Antioxidants for Neurodegenerative Disease: A Study on Alzheimer's Disease

The complex etiology of neurodegeneration continues to stifle efforts to develop effective therapeutics. New agents elucidating key pathways causing neurodegeneration might serve to increase our understanding and potentially lead to improved treatments. Here, we demonstrate that a water-soluble manganese(II) texaphyrin (MMn) is a suitable magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent for detecting larger amyloid beta constructs. The imaging potential of MMn was inferred on the basis of in vitro studies and in vivo detection in Alzheimer's disease C. elegans models via MRI and ICP-MS. In vitro antioxidant- and cellular-based assays provide support for the notion that this porphyrin analog shows promise as a therapeutic agent able to mitigate the oxidative and nitrative toxic effects considered causal in neurodegeneration. The present report marks the first elaboration of an MRI-active metalloantioxidant that confers diagnostic and therapeutic benefit in Alzheimer's disease models without conjugation of a radioisotope, targeting moiety, or therapeutic payload.

Tin(IV)-Porphyrin Tetracarbonyl Cobaltate: An Efficient Catalyst for the Carbonylation of Epoxides

Cationic tin(IV) porphyrins with tetracarbonyl cobaltates were synthesized, exhibiting bifunctional catalytic reactivity. The Lewis acidic tin-porphyrin center activated epoxides; concurrently, cobalt carbonyl anions efficiently opened epoxides and delivered carbonyl moieties. Thus, a series of β-lactones with a high synthetic value were obtained. This catalytic system showed excellent efficiency exceeding a turnover number of one thousand with a broad substrate scope. In addition, the presented tin porphyrin-based catalyst exhibited exclusive chemoselectivity to terminal epoxides over internal ones. The selective carbonylation of di-epoxides demonstrated the usefulness of these catalysts in the synthesis of complex molecular structures.

Main-Group-Element Isophlorin Complexes Revisited: The Question of a Subvalent Central Atom

A careful density functional theory reexamination of the geometric and electronic structures of reduced main-group porphyrin complexes E(Por)L₂ (E = Si or Ge; L = pyridine or tetrahydrofuran), B₂(Por), and C₂(Por) has confirmed these as pure isophlorin derivatives with normal-valent coordinated central atoms. Only axially unligated Ge(Por) and the dications [B₂(Por)]²⁺ and [C₂(Por)]²⁺ feature aromatic porphyrin ligands. The calculations faithfully reproduce the strong bond-length alternation along the outer rim of the macrocycle in the reduced complexes, consistent with antiaromatic character, as well as much stronger ruffling in the reduced group 14 complexes relative to their nonreduced counterparts such as E(Por)X₂ (E = Si or Ge; X = F or Cl). The latter is thought to reflect the lower barrier to nonplanar deformation for the antiaromatic systems. In addition, unlike B₂(Por) and its dication, which are planar, C₂(Por) and its dication are predicted to be strongly ruffled, reflecting the smaller size of the central C₂ unit. The calculations also predict characteristically low ionization potentials and singlet-triplet gaps for the antiaromatic complexes. A brief exploratory study of the as-yet-unknown group 15 complexes E(TPP)(Ph)(py), where E = P and As, also indicated an antiaromatic isophlorin macrocycle coordinated to a pentavalent group 15 center.

Diboron Porphyrins: The Raman Signature of the In-Plane Tetragonal Elongation of the Macrocycle

We describe an unusual in-plane type of porphyrin core distortion, tetragonal elongation (TE), observed experimentally in diboron porphyrins. The vibrational spectra of several of these complexes exhibit shifts that we have assigned to this TE distortion by comparing experimental spectra with DFT computational findings. The influence of TE in porphyrin systems was isolated using DFT analysis of the well-known model compounds Ni(II)porphine and Zn(II)porphine, with the macrocycle ring constrained to eliminate the influence of out-of-plane (OOP) distortions. A significant down-shift in frequencies was observed for porphyrin normal vibrational modes, particularly the in-plane A_1g/B_1g modes that are dominated by contributions from stretching and bending of C_α-C_m coordinates. In contrast, TE had little effect on the v(Pyr_halfring) and δ(Pyr_def) modes, though the lowered symmetry of the system resulted in significant splitting of the B_2u and B_3u modes. The impact of the TE distortion upon the diboron porphyrin vibrational spectrum was probed experimentally using Raman spectroscopy of B₂O₂(BCl₃)₂(TTP), B₂OF₂(TTP), and B₂OPhOH₂(TTP) (TTP = 5,10,15,20-(tetra- p-tolyl)porphyrin). Comparing the experimentally obtained spectral signatures to the computational findings allowed us to assign the large shifts observed for the v₂ and v₃ modes to the TE distortion in diboron porphyrins.

A new fundamental type of conformational isomerism

Isomerism is a fundamental chemical concept, reflecting the fact that the arrangement of atoms in a molecular entity has a profound influence on its chemical and physical properties. Here we describe a previously unclassified fundamental form of conformational isomerism through four resolved stereoisomers of a transoid (BF)O(BF)-quinoxalinoporphyrin. These comprise two pairs of enantiomers that manifest structural relationships not describable within existing IUPAC nomenclature and terminology. They undergo thermal diastereomeric interconversion over a barrier of 104 ± 2 kJ mol^-1, which we term 'akamptisomerization'. Feasible interconversion processes between conceivable synthesis products and reaction intermediates were mapped out by density functional theory calculations, identifying bond-angle inversion (BAI) at a singly bonded atom as the reaction mechanism. We also introduce the necessary BAI stereodescriptors parvo and amplo. Based on an extended polytope formalism of molecular structure and stereoisomerization, BAI-driven akamptisomerization is shown to be the final fundamental type of conformational isomerization.

Boron calixphyrin complexes: exploring the coordination chemistry of a BODIPY/porphyrin hybrid

Boron complexes of calix[4]phyrins (1.1.1.1) were prepared by reacting the free-base ligands with BF₃·Et₂O. The reaction conditions can be efficiently tailored to produce mono- or di-boron calixphyrins. Mono-BF₂ calixphyrins with boron coordinating to either the dipyrrin, BF₂[H(Calix)], or dipyrromethane, BF₂[H(Calix)] and BF₂[H₂(Calix)]⁺, bonding sites were isolated. The dipyrromethane isomer, BF₂[H(Calix)], isomerises into BF₂[H(Calix)] which kinetic studies and DFT calculations indicate is an intramolecular process. Two isomers of B₂OF₂(Calix) were isolated, one isomer bonding via the dipyrrin sites with the FBOBF moiety in cisoid geometry, and the second isomer bonding via the dipyrromethane sites with the FBOBF moiety in transoid geometry. Although the cisoid/dipyrrin isomer was calculated to be most energetically favourable for B₂OF₂(Calix), the isolation of the transoid/dipyrromethane isomer is postulated to occur via the presumed intermediate (BF₂)₂(Calix), for which DFT indicated a preference for transoid/dipyrromethane geometry.

Electronic Structure of Corrole Derivatives: Insights from Molecular Structures, Spectroscopy, Electrochemistry, and Quantum Chemical Calculations

Presented herein is a comprehensive account of the electronic structure of corrole derivatives. Our knowledge in this area derives from a broad range of methods, including UV-vis-NIR absorption and MCD spectroscopies, single-crystal X-ray structure determination, vibrational spectroscopy, NMR and EPR spectroscopies, electrochemistry, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations, the latter including both density functional theory and ab initio multiconfigurational methods. The review is organized according to the Periodic Table, describing free-base and main-group element corrole derivatives, then transition-metal corroles, and finally f-block element corroles. Like porphyrins, corrole derivatives with a redox-inactive coordinated atom follow the Gouterman four-orbital model. A key difference from porphyrins is the much wider prevalence of noninnocent electronic structures as well as full-fledged corrole^•2- radicals among corrole derivatives. The most common orbital pathways mediating ligand noninnocence in transition-metal corroles are the metal(d_z2)-corrole("a_2u") interaction (most commonly observed in Mn and Fe corroles) and the metal(d_x2-y2)-corrole(a_2u) interaction in coinage metal corroles. Less commonly encountered is the metal(d_π)-corrole("a_1u") interaction, a unique feature of formal d⁵ metallocorroles. Corrole derivatives exhibit a rich array of optical properties, including substituent-sensitive Soret maxima indicative of ligand noninnocence, strong fluorescence in the case of lighter main-group element complexes, and room-temperature near-IR phosphorescence in the case of several 5d metal complexes. The review concludes with an attempt at identifying gaps in our current knowledge and potential future directions of electronic-structural research on corrole derivatives.

Recent developments in the coordination chemistry of porphyrin complexes containing non-metallic and semi-metallic elements

Recent advances in the chemistry of main group porphyrin complexes are surveyed. New, unprecedented structural types for porphyrin complexes which have been revealed from the recent reports of boron and tellurium porphyrins are described. Advances in the preparation and reactivity of Group 14 (silicon and tin) and Group 15 porphyrin complexes are discussed. A systematic variation in the out-of-plane distortion (ruffling) of light element Group 14 and 15 porphyrin complexes has become apparent now that a significant number of structurally characterized examples are at hand.

Diboryl and Diboranyl Porphyrin Complexes: Synthesis, Structural Motifs, and Redox Chemistry: Diborenyl Porphyrin or Diboranyl Isophlorin?

The syntheses of diboryl porphyrin complexes [(BX2)2(ttp)] (ttp: dianion of tetra-p-tolylporphyrin) and the B-B single-bond diboranyl complexes [(BX)2(ttp)] (X=F, Cl, Br, I) are given. The former are prepared from the reactions of BX3 (X=F, Cl) with [Li2(ttp)] and the latter from B(2)Cl(4) (X=Cl), the reaction of SbF3 with [(BCl)2(ttp)] (for X=F), and, in the cases of X=Br or I, in a remarkable reductive coupling reaction resulting directly from the reaction of BBr3 or BI3 with [Li2(ttp)]. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the thermochemical parameters for the reductive coupling reactions (and those calculated for related dipyrromethene complexes) indicate that a combination of the reducing ability of bromide and iodide ions combined with the constrained environment of the porphyrin ligand contribute to the driving force. The reductive coupling is also observed in the reaction of [(BCl2)2(ttp)] with nBuLi to give [(BnBu)2(ttp)], which was characterised crystallographically. The reaction of [(BCl)2(ttp)] with catechol gives a boron catecholato porphyrin complex, [B2(O(2)C(6)H(4))(ttp)]. Chloride abstraction from [(BCl)2(ttp)] gives the planar dication [B2(ttp)]2+, whereas chemical reduction of [(BCl)2(ttp)] by using magnesium anthracenide gives a neutral complex, [B(2)(ttp)], in which the TTP ligand has been reduced by two electrons to give an unusual example of an isophlorin complex. The cationic and neutral complexes [B2(ttp)]2+ and [B2(ttp)] were characterised through a combination of spectroscopic data that is supported by DFT calculations on the porphine analogues.
