Abstract
A 76-y-old Japanese man who had undergone gastrectomy 4.5 y earlier experienced 2 wk of sore throat, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. Endoscopy showed deep, craterlike, longitudinal ulcers in the lower and middle esophagus. Immunohistochemistry and blood tests were negative for herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus infections. The patient reported no other symptoms affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Although his symptoms ameliorated after initial hospitalization and treatment, they re-emerged a few days after being discharged. Fifty-one days after being first admitted, he complained of glossalgia. The serum zinc level was found to be 38 µg/dL, which was below the reference range; the patient was diagnosed with zinc deficiency. After oral zinc administration, the patient was relieved of the symptoms, and his pain was alleviated. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy after symptom relief showed improvement in the esophageal ulcers. He has continued taking zinc supplementations, and has not developed similar symptoms in the 5 y since being treated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of esophageal ulcers related to zinc deficiency.

Abstract
Silent gastric ulceration occurs without evidence of clinical signs and is common in horses. There is currently no a simple and effective method to diagnose this disease. Proteomics can be used to identify serum biomarkers, but the most abundant serum protein, albumin, could conceal candidate biomarkers. Therefore, it is recommended to remove albumin before a proteomic study; however, there is no specific albumin depletion kit or standard protocol available for horse samples. The objectives of this study were to optimise a protocol to remove equine serum albumin and to use albumin-depleted serum to identify the protein biomarkers for silent gastric ulceration. Gastroscopy was used to identify gastric ulceration, and serum was obtained from horses with either a healthy gastric mucosa or gastric ulceration. Serum albumin was removed using the trichloroacetic acid (TCA) protein precipitation method, and this protocol was optimised by varying the concentration of TCA, type of organic solvents, ratio of serum to protein precipitation solution, and incubation times. Electrophoresis and image analysis were used to compare the amounts of albumin, immunoglobulins G (IgG), and protein degradation before and after TCA precipitation. The best protocol was chosen to remove albumin for a proteomic study (electrophoresis and mass spectrometry). The results revealed that protocol 2 (ratio of serum to solution 1:5, 10% TCA in acetone, and 90 min incubation) was the most efficient protocol to remove albumin (98%) and IgG heavy (80%) and light (98%) chains without degrading other proteins. After electrophoresis and mass spectrometry analysis, KRT1, KRT6A and KRT18 were identified as potential markers for silent gastric ulceration.

Abstract
In this study, we sought to determine the distribution and expression of heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60) in the tissues of transported piglets. A total of 24 Chinese Erhualian piglets with an average body weight of 20 +/- 1 kg were assessed under both 2-h transported and normal housing conditions. Results of enzymatic analysis showed that the serum creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase concentrations were significantly increased in the 2-h transported piglets. Acute cellular lesions characterized by granular and vacuolar degeneration of the parenchyma cells in the tested heart, liver, and kidney were also confirmed by histopathological test after 2 h transportation. These results indicate that transport stress induces tissue damage to heart, liver, and kidney. Hsp60-positive immunostaining was consistently detected in the cytoplasm of myocardial cells, hepatocytes, renal tubular epithelial cells, and epithelial cells of fundic gland. However, results of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay indicated that Hsp60 expression was only significantly elevated in the stomach, with lower expression in the heart and a non-significant trend of increased liver and kidney expression of Hsp60. These results indicate that different tissues had different sensitivities to transport stress, possibly resulting in varying levels of cytoprotection by Hsp60 in the different tissues. The expression of Hsp60 following 2 h transportation coincided with deterioration of cardiac cytoprotection in the heart and protection in the stomach. However, the direct role of Hsp60 in cytoprotection of heart and stomach tissues needs further investigation.
