Abstract
The cellular and subcellular organization of thyroid follicular cells in peripubertal (6-month-old) male pigs treated with estradiol-dipropionate (Oe) plus progesterone (Pr) in combination on the first postnatal day was studied. A stereological method was used for morphometric determinations of the relative volume densities of the follicular epithelium, colloid and interstitium, and for establishing the epithelial height and index of activation rate. Statistically significant differences of the examined parameters between the control and Oe+Pr -treated groups were determined by Student's t-test. The subcellular organization of thyroid follicular cells was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). When compared with the control group, in the Oe+Pr -treated pigs, thyroid follicles possessed a noticeably higher follicular epithelium when compared with the control animals. The observed changes were quantified and comparison between the experimental groups showed that the height, volume density of follicular epithelium, and index of activation rate were significantly (P < 0.05) increased, whereas the relative volume density of the colloid was significantly (P < 0.05) decreased. At the subcellular level the thyroid follicular cells of Oe+Pr -treated pigs were characterized by increased number of polysomes and dense bodies and extensive endoplasmatic reticulum. It was concluded that a single neonatal treatment with female gonadal steroids exerted a prolonged effect on the pig's thyroid, characterized by increased biosynthesis and reabsorption of the colloid by the follicular cells.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of exogenous melatonin on the thyrocytes morphology in gamma-irradiated rats under condition where the pineal gland, as a main physiological source of endogenous melatonin, was removed. Three months after pinealectomy animals were divided into two groups: one group of animals was treated with 0.5 ml of vehicle (ethanol diluted in water) and other group was injected intraperitoneally 2 mg/kg of melatonin dissolved in 0.5 ml of vehicle daily during the period of fourteen days. After this treatment all the animals were irradiated with a single dose of 8 Gy gamma rays. Ionising radiation induced apoptosis, hydropic swelling or/and necrosis in both groups of animals, however these changes were less discerned in the thyrocytes of melatonin-treated animals. Our findings demonstrate that administration of exogenous melatonin prior to irradiation reduces radiation-induced thyrocytes damage.

Abstract
Objective of our study was to use morphophysiological criteria in order to determine the sensitivity of male rat thyroid gland to an extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) influence and the ability of the gland to repair after period of exposure. Animals were exposed to 50Hz, 50-500 microT ELF-EMF for 3 months when a part of them (group I) were sacrificed, while the rest of animals were subjected to recovery evaluation of the gland and sacrificed after 1 (group II), 2 (group III) and 3 (group IV) weeks. Histological and stereological analyses were performed on paraffin and semifine thyroid gland sections. Serum T3 and T4 were also determined. Histological and stereological analyses showed that the volume density of follicular epithelium and thyroid activation index decreased, while the volume density of colloid and capillary network increased in group I, II and III. The values of all these parameters in group IV were similar to corresponding controls. Serum T3 and T4 concentrations were significantly lower in all exposed animals, except in group I. Results of this study demonstrate that after significant morphophysiological changes caused by ELF-EMF exposure thyroid gland recovered morphologically, but not physiologically, during the investigated repair period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The permanent increase in the number of cases of different forms of thyroid pathology requires a deeper study of the thyroid structure and its morphogenetic processes. METHODS The thyroid glands of Wistar rats were used in a composite study that involved standard light microscopy, semithin sections, silver staining, immunohistochemistry, morphometry, three-dimensional analysis, and computer-assisted three-dimensional reconstruction. RESULTS The absolute majority of follicles have from one to seven interfollicular contacts (C) with other neighbouring follicles. The surface of C makes up 32% of the follicular basal surface. In the central zone of 1-micron-thick sections, the relative quantity of C per follicle (0.44 +/- 0.05) is 36% more than in the peripheral zone (0.28 +/- 0.07; P < 0.05). The analysis of serial sections shows that 134 follicles have 133 C. Only three follicles are separate; four form pair groups, and others form groups that include up to 92 follicles. Follicles form linear chains with numerous branches. A three-dimensional reconstruction demonstrates a spatial configuration of the parenchyma's elements. In C, the basement membrane is absent. Consequently, a group of interconnected follicles form a parenchymal compartment with a common basement membrane. We named these parenchymal compartments "epitheliomers." Both the formation of new follicles and follicular fusion take place within the boundaries of the epitheliomer without violating the integrity of the compartment. The fusion of follicles is brought on by the destruction of the epithelium of C. CONCLUSIONS The authors put forward a new "epitheliomeral" concept with regard to the structural organization of the thyroid gland.

Abstract
Results obtained by examining hypothalamic neurons producing precursors to neurohormones, and pituitary cells synthesizing peptide and glycoprotein families of hormones, and recent advances in comparative endocrinology, have been summarized and considered from the following viewpoints: species specificity in the organization and communication of the hypothalamic neurons with different brain areas lying inside the BBB and with CVOs; sensitivity of hypothalamic neurons and pituitary cells to the environmental stimuli; gonadal steroids as modulators of gene expression needed for neuronal differentiation and synaptogenesis; dose(s)-dependent pituitary cell proliferation and differentiation; an inverse relationship between PRL and GH synthesis and release and also between degree of hyperplasia and hypertrophy of PRL cells and retardation of GTH cell differentiation; and responsiveness of neurons producing CRH, and of neurons and pituitary cells synthesizing POMC hormones, to stress and glucocorticosteroids. These data show that growth of the animals may be stimulated, retarded, or inhibited; reproductive properties and behavior may be under hormonal control; and character of responsiveness in reaction to stress, and ability for adaptation and other related functions, may be controlled.

Abstract
Autonomic innervation of the adrenal cortex has been demonstrated in several species. Detailed ultrastructural studies on the innervation of the zona fasciculata of the normal human adrenal cortex are lacking. We report herein our observations on the pattern of innervation of the cells of the zona fasciculata of the normal adult human cortex at both the light and electron microscope levels. Postganglionic unmyelinated fibers were observed to descend from a dense capsular meshwork and to be distributed as delicate branches among the columns of endocrine cells. Immunoperoxidase staining confirmed the presence of nerve fibers in the zona fasciculata in a distribution similar to that observed after staining with silver impregnation methods. Ultrastructural findings lent further support to these observations by the demonstration of bundles of unmyelinated fibers with focal enlargements containing terminal boutons with both clear and dense core vesicles in close approximation with the endocrine cells.

Abstract
The thyroid follicles of adult male Wistar rats were examined at six evenly spaced times over 24 hr with a morphometric technique. Follicular structures were subjected to distinct variations during 24 hr, with respect to volume and numerical densities of follicles in the thyroid gland, and diameters, volumes, cell numbers, and luminal surface areas of individual follicles. Variations in follicular structures were divided into two phases: a large follicular phase at 1200, 1600, and 2000 hr and a small follicular phase at the other times. Although volume densities of follicles in the gland varied with a small amplitude, diameters, volumes, and cell numbers of individual follicles exhibited distinct fluctuations during 24 hr. Numerical densities of follicles in the gland changed distinctly during the small follicular phase as well. Degenerating follicular cells appeared in the follicular lumen especially at 1600 hr. No mitotic follicular cells were found throughout the experiment. Furthermore, one to three follicular cells of two adjacent follicles were often in contact with each other at 0400, 0800, and 1200 hr, and these follicles were lined by the common basement membranes. These results suggest that the variations in follicular structures during the small follicular phase occur in the form of follicle separation and fusion. Moreover, the morphological and morphometric variations in follicles reflect those in subcellular structures of follicular cells previously reported by us.

Abstract
Changes in thyroid structure induced by a decrease in TSH or iodide-dependent stimulation were quantified by stereological analysis of light micrographs. Studies were carried out on intact (R5) and hypophysectomized (R5H) rats receiving 5 micrograms iodide, and on intact rats (R5O) receiving 50 micrograms iodide daily. For R5H- and R5O-thyroids, the mean parameters of the epithelial cells, height, volume and lateral membrane area, were smaller than those of R5-thyroids. An inverse shift was observed for the apical membrane area, whereas the peripheral membrane area was unchanged. The number of epithelial cells was similar in each of the three groups; however, the number of follicles was greater in R5-thyroids, suggesting that follicular fusion occurs in R5O- and R5H-thyroids. This was confirmed by direct observation. The present results demonstrate that in adult rats a lack of TSH or an increased iodide diet (insufficient to produce a physiopathological state) induce follicle fusion probably by means of cellular reorganization. This increase in follicle size could be involved in the regulation of thyroid iodine turnover.

Abstract
Antibodies made against thyroglobulin (TG) were used in an immunocytochemical study for the light and electron microscopic localization of TG in the thyroid gland of the anadromous sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus, during its upstream migration. TG was found in the follicular lumen and in some colloid droplets within the follicular cells. Except for an immunoreactive product observed in a small portion of the interstitial connective tissue, the location of TG in the lamprey was similar to that in the thyroid of the rat.

Abstract
The present study was undertaken to seek ultrastructural changes in the thyroid gland of the spontaneously hypertensive rat which would contribute to the understanding of previously reported abnormalities in thyroid function. Light and electron microscopic observations and measurements of plasma T3 and systolic blood pressure were recorded from a colony of Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) and of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). The systolic blood pressure of SHR was significantly higher than that of WKY but the plasma T3 levels of the two groups did not differ significantly. After administration of propylthiouracil (PTU), serum T3 levels and systolic pressure of both groups decreased. The size of the thyroid follicles in SHR was highly variable throughout the gland, and the colloid contained unevenly dense areas and cell debris. The follicular cells contained slightly dilated rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and numerous pleomorphic bodies of uneven density. After treatment with PTU, the vessels between the follicles of SHR did not become as dilated as those in WKY but the fine structure of follicular cells in SHR was similar to that of WKY and was characteristic of the typical thyroid response to PTU administration. We suggest that the thyroid in SHR does not respond adequately to the elevated TSH levels reported to be present in these animals, although it can respond to the highly elevated TSH levels which occur with PTU administration. This impairment most probably involves defects in synthesis and/or secretion of thyroid hormones in response to TSH stimulation.
