The role of musculoskeletal mechanics in motor coordination

Muscle proprioceptors in adult rat: mechanosensory signaling and synapse distribution in spinal cord

The characteristic signaling and intraspinal projections of muscle proprioceptors best described in the cat are often generalized across mammalian species. However, species-dependent adaptations within this system seem necessary to accommodate asymmetric scaling of length, velocity, and force information required by the physics of movement. In the present study we report mechanosensory responses and intraspinal destinations of three classes of muscle proprioceptors. Proprioceptors from triceps surae muscles in adult female Wistar rats anesthetized with isoflurane were physiologically classified as muscle spindle group Ia or II or as tendon organ group Ib afferents, studied for their firing responses to passive-muscle stretch, and in some cases labeled and imaged for axon projections and varicosities in spinal segments. Afferent projections and the laminar distributions of provisional synapses in rats closely resembled those found in the cat. Afferent signaling of muscle kinematics was also similar to reports in the cat, but rat Ib afferents fired robustly during passive-muscle stretch and Ia afferents displayed an exaggerated dynamic response, even after locomotor scaling was accounted for. These differences in mechanosensory signaling by muscle proprioceptors may represent adaptations for movement control in different animal species.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Muscle sensory neurons signal information necessary for controlling limb movements. The information encoded and transmitted by muscle proprioceptors to networks in the spinal cord is known in detail only for the cat, but differences in size and behavior of other species challenge the presumed generalizability. This report presents the first findings detailing specializations in mechanosensory signaling and intraspinal targets for functionally identified subtypes of muscle proprioceptors in the rat.

The role of neuromuscular properties in determining the end-point of a movement

How does the activation of several muscles combine to produce reliable multijoint movements? To study this question, we stimulated up to six sites in muscles, nerves, and the spinal cord. Flexion and extension of the hip, knee, and ankle were elicited in anesthetized and decerebrate cats. The movements occurred largely in the sagittal plane against a constant spring load and covered most of the passive range of motion of the cat's limb. The movements of the end-point (foot) were compared with predictions based on vectorial summation of end-point movements elicited by stimulating single electrodes. The lengths of the movements produced by stimulating more than one site exceeded what was expected from linear summation for small movements (<3 cm) and showed a less than linear summation for large movements (>11 cm). The data were compared with muscle and limb models. Since the deviations from linearity were predictable as a function of distance, adjustments might easily be learned by trial and error. The summation was less complete for spinal stimulation, compared to nerve and muscle stimulation, so spinal circuits do not appear to compensate for the nonlinearities. Movements were elicited from positions of the limb not only in a neutral position, but also in front and behind the neutral position. A degree of convergence was seen, even with stimulation of some individual muscles, but the convergence increased as more muscles were stimulated and more joints were actively involved. This suggests that convergence to an equilibrium-point arises at least partly from muscle properties. In conclusion, there are deviations from linear vectorial summation, and these deviations increase when more muscles are stimulated. The convergence to an equilibrium-point may simplify the computations needed to produce movements involving many muscles.

Distribution of heterogenic reflexes among the quadriceps and triceps surae muscles of the cat hind limb

Neural signals from proprioceptors in muscles provide length and force-related linkages among muscles of the limbs. The functions of this network of heterogenic reflexes remain unclear. New data are reported here on the distribution and magnitudes of neural feedback among quadriceps and triceps surae muscles in the decerebrate cat. The purpose of this paper was to distinguish whether inhibitory-force feedback is directed against muscles by virtue of the motor-unit composition or articulation of the muscle. These studies were carried out using controlled stretches and measurements of the resulting force responses of individual quadriceps and triceps surae muscles. Responses were evoked over a wide range of background force levels. In agreement with earlier electrophysiological studies, excitatory length feedback strongly linked the vastus muscles, but excitatory reflexes between each vastus and rectus femoris muscles were weak. We also observed a substantial excitatory linkage from the vastus muscles to the soleus muscle. In contrast, force-related inhibition was absent in the heterogenic reflexes among the vastus muscles but strong and bidirectional between each vastus muscle and the rectus femoris muscle and between triceps surae and quadriceps muscles. We conclude that short-latency feedback in the hindlimb is organized according to muscle articulation. Length feedback within muscle groups regulates joint stiffness while interjoint length feedback may compensate for the effects of nonuniform inertial properties of the limb. Force feedback is organized to regulate coupling between joints and, along with length feedback, determine the mechanical properties of the endpoint.

Intrinsic properties and reflex compensation in reinnervated triceps surae muscles of the cat: effect of activation level

The manner in which activation levels influence intrinsic muscular properties and contributions of the stretch reflex were studied in homogeneous soleus (SOL) and heterogeneous gastrocnemius (G) muscles in the decerebrate cat. Intrinsic mechanical properties were represented by the initial stiffness of the muscle, measured prior to reflex action, and by the tendency of the muscle to yield during stretch in the absence of the stretch reflex. Stiffness regulation by the stretch reflex was evaluated by measuring the extent to which reflex action reduces yielding and the extent to which stiffness depends on background force. Intrinsic mechanical properties were measured in muscles deprived of effective autogenic reflexes using the method of muscular reinnervation. Reinnervated muscles were recruited to force levels comparable to those achieved during natural locomotion. As force declined during crossed-extension reflexes in reinnervated and intact muscles, initial stiffness declined according to similar convex trajectories. The data did not support the hypothesis that, for a given force level, initial stiffness is greatest in populations of predominantly type I motor units. Incremental stiffness (Deltaf/Deltal) of both G and SOL increased in the presence of the stretch reflex. Yielding of SOL (ratio of incremental to initial stiffness) substantially decreased in the presence of the stretch reflex over the full range of forces. In reflexive G, yielding significantly decreased for low to intermediate forces, whereas at higher forces, yielding was similar irrespective of the presence or absence of the stretch reflex. The stretch reflex regulates stiffness in both homogeneous and heterogeneous muscles.

Intrinsic properties and reflex compensation in reinnervated triceps surae muscles of the cat: effect of movement history

Effects of prior motion on ramp stretch responses of reflexive and areflexive muscles were measured in decerebrate cats. Soleus and gastrocnemius muscles were rendered areflexive by reinnervation a minimum of 9 mo before the terminal experiments. The introduction of a shortening phase prior to the ramp stretch increased the normalized initial stiffness of muscles and decreased the tendency to yield of the reinnervated muscles as compared with the case in which muscles contracted isometrically prior to stretch. Yielding was compensated by reflex action for all amplitudes of prior shortening in soleus and gastrocnemius muscles. The comparison of responses of untreated and reinnervated muscles indicated that the contribution of reflex action progressively declined with the amplitude of prior shortening as the extent of yielding diminished. In soleus muscle, during a variable delay period of isometric contraction interposed between shortening and lengthening force generation, initial stiffness and yielding returned to levels seen with isometric contractile history. However, these attributes recovered at different rates, suggesting that distinct processes are responsible for initial stiffness and yielding. Yielding was compensated for by reflex action regardless of the length of the interposed delay or of the amplitude of the prior shortening. These and previous findings indicate that the stretch reflex regulates muscular stiffness for a wide range of conditions. This regulation apparently arises from complementary mechanical properties of intrafusal and extrafusal muscle.

Musculoskeletal mechanics: a foundation of motor physiology

The design of the musculoskeletal system has always been a major consideration in the interpretation of experiments on the motor system. However, as motor physiology progresses toward a more comprehensive picture of motor behaviour, the study of the musculoskeletal system has of necessity, and of interest, come to depend more and more on the quantitative methods of biomechanics. Biomechanical studies have led to new hypotheses about the design of the motor system and biomechanical considerations have provided important tests of existing hypotheses concerning the neural control of movement. These hypotheses include global issues such as redundancy and encoded variables as well as specific hypotheses such as Stiffness Regulation, Selective Recruitment and the concept of Flexor Reflex Afferents.

Dynamic knee stability: current theory and implications for clinicians and scientists

We will discuss the mechanisms by which dynamic knee stability may be achieved and relate this to issues that interest clinicians and scientists concerned with dynamic knee stability. Emphasis is placed on the neurophysiologic evidence and theory related to neuromuscular control. Specific topics discussed include the ensemble firing of peripheral mechanoreceptors, the potential for muscle stiffness modulation via force and length feedback, postural control synergies, motor programs, and the neural control of gait. Factors related to answering the difficult question of whether or not knee ligament injuries can be prevented during athletic activities are discussed. Prevention programs that train athletes to perform their sport skills in a safe fashion are put forth as the most promising prospect for injury prevention. Methods of assessing neuromuscular function are reviewed critically and the need for future research in this area is emphasized. We conclude with a brief review of the literature regarding neuromuscular training programs.

How animals move: an integrative view

Recent advances in integrative studies of locomotion have revealed several general principles. Energy storage and exchange mechanisms discovered in walking and running bipeds apply to multilegged locomotion and even to flying and swimming. Nonpropulsive lateral forces can be sizable, but they may benefit stability, maneuverability, or other criteria that become apparent in natural environments. Locomotor control systems combine rapid mechanical preflexes with multimodal sensory feedback and feedforward commands. Muscles have a surprising variety of functions in locomotion, serving as motors, brakes, springs, and struts. Integrative approaches reveal not only how each component within a locomotor system operates but how they function as a collective whole.
