Abstract
Estrus synchronization is important for improving sheep reproduction. To enhance sheep reproduction efficiency, this study investigated the impact of different durations (7 vs. 14 days) and fluorogestone acetate (FGA) doses in intravaginal sponges on estrus synchronization and early pregnancy detection in Ossimi sheep. Two hundred ewes were evenly divided into two groups, each receiving a full 40 mg or a halved 20 mg FGA sponge for their respective durations. The study aimed to optimize breeding efficiency by examining the effectiveness of these treatments in synchronizing estrous cycles and by evaluating the use of serum levels of pregnancy-associated glycoprotein 1 (PAG1) and progesterone (P4) as markers for early pregnancy identification. Prostaglandin F2α and equine chorionic gonadotropin were administered to enhance the synchronization process. Results highlighted that the 7-day treatment protocol significantly improved estrus, pregnancy, and lambing rates compared to the 14-day protocol. Furthermore, pregnant ewes demonstrated elevated levels of PAG1 and P4, with PAG1 levels particularly higher in ewes with multiple pregnancies. The findings underscore that the shorter duration of FGA treatment is more effective for reproductive management in Ossimi sheep without significantly affecting PAG1 levels based on the dose or duration of FGA. PAG1 also proved to be a reliable marker for early pregnancy detection, offering a promising approach to identifying fetal numbers early in pregnancy. This research suggests optimizing FGA sponge use could be cost-efficient for improving reproductive efficiency and early pregnancy management in sheep.

Abstract
Presently, there is an increased demand for livestock products all over the world
which has led to more devotion on improving livestock population. Although goats
have been bred for a long time in Korea, but there is not much research
conducted on traditional Korean black goat (Capra hircus
coreanae) compared to other livestock populations. Mutton
consumption has been dramatically changing from medicinal use to edible meat and
this trend directs the black goat populations declining and also mutton import
quantities are increasing consistently. The present study introduced a new
estrus synchronizing technique with subsequent artificial insemination (AI) for
Korean black goats to enable crossbreeding with non-native breeds for the small
or subsistent farmers. Our data highlighted that, the percentage of motile sperm
from the electro-ejaculated samples declined significantly after freezing and
melting. In addition, the sperm motility significantly declined with regard to
sperm incubation period (0, 5, 60, and 120 min at 37°C) and was
negatively correlated (64.2 ± 7.9%, 63.3 ± 5.8%, 49.9 ±
6.3%, and 35.9 ± 7.6%, respectively) in frozen-thawed sperm samples.
Moreover, the E2 levels were unchanged even 24 h after controlled internal drug
releas (CIDR) withdrawal. But, 48 h and 72 h after CIDR removal, E2 levels
increased significantly. These data helps us to consider the two time points for
AI; CIDR removal after 24 h, at which E2 decreases, and after 48 h, as the time
at which progesterone increases. Additionally, the AI after 48 h of CIDR removal
group exhibited significantly higher pregnancy and parturition rates (42.9%)
compared to AI after 24 h after CIDR removal 28.6% group. In conclusion, these
studies will propose an optimal estrus synchronisation process with subsequent
timing of AI and also will promote the Korean black goat breeding industry.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to develop and evaluate a sustained release vaginal progesterone (P4) capsule containing a mixture of
mucoadhesive polymer and silicone fluid. Goats were administered a gelatin capsule containing 0.4 g of P4 mixed in silicone fluid and either a
hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HM) or polyaclil starch (PA) base. The mean plasma P4 concentrations at 2 and 12 h after administration were
significantly higher in goats treated with PA capsules than in those with HM capsules. The plasma P4 concentrations in goats treated with HM capsules
increased and remained above 1.0 ng/ml for 96 h after administration, whereas the plasma P4 concentrations in goats treated with PA capsules remained
above 1.0 ng/ml for only 24 h after administration. In the next experiment, an HM capsule was attached to a silicone device and inserted in the vagina for 10
days. The plasma P4 concentration remained similar to that of the natural luteal phase for 9 days. These results suggest that a mixture of
mucoadhesive polymer and silicone fluid has the potential to be applied clinically as a sustained release base for estrus synchronization or hormonal
therapy.

Abstract
In Jordan, the Arabian Oryx (Oryx leucoryx) is considered among the most important wild ungulates. The Arabian Oryx is listed as vulnerable species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Based on author's knowledge, estrus synchronization in the Arabian Oryx has never been investigated. Therefore, the current study aimed to validate a Controlled Internal Drug Release (CIDR) estrus synchronization technique for the first time in 7 Arabian Oryx females. Prior to CIDR application, animals were subjected to transabdominal ultrasonic examination twice, two weeks apart to exclude pregnancies. A single CIDR was inserted (Day 0) for a period of 7 days. At the time of CIDR removal (Day 7), animals were administered a single injection of prostaglandin F2α (PF2α) and equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG). Blood samples were collected from all animals before, during and after CIDR removal for progesterone (P4) analysis. Animals were monitored for estrus behavior for 8 days starting 24 h after CIDR removal. All animals were considered to be anestrous at the start of the study as defined by having blood progesterone <1 ng/ml prior to insertion of the CIDR. All animals displayed estrous behavior between Day 1-3 after CIDR removal and the average interval from CIDR removal to estrus and length of estrus were 53.71 ± 5.59 h and 55.43 ± 6.19 h, respectively. On Day 14 (6 days after CIDR removal) P4 concentrations rose above 1 ng/ml indicated ovulation. It is possible to synchronize estrus in Arabian Oryx using CIDRs. The success of CIDR estrous synchronization in female Arabian Oryx, as described in the current study, opens new perspectives towards the possible application of assisted reproductive techniques for the propagation and conservation englishEnglishof this vulnerable species.

Abstract
This study reported the effects of prostaglandin (PGF2a) administration 10 days apart on reproductive parameters of cyclic artificial inseminated (AI) nulliparous Alpine (n=9) and Saanen (n=9) goats. Animals received two doses of 22.5mg PGF2a 10 days apart. After 1st and 2nd PGF2a administrations, estrus was monitored at 12 h intervals, with a buck teaser. Plasma progesterone concentration (ng/mL) was determined from blood sampled on day 0 (1st PGF2a) and the following 5, 10 (2nd PGF2a), 15, 20, 25 and 30 days. After the onset of the second estrus, females were transrectally (5 MHz probe) scanned at 4 hour intervals until at least 8h after ovulation. Pregnancy was checked through transrectal ultrasound on days 20, 25, 30, 35 and 90 after insemination. All parameters studied did not differ between breeds (P>0.05). Estrous response and interval to estrus, respectively, after 1st (78.9% and 50.6±17.2h) and 2nd PGF2a (88.9% and 50.0±14.8h) administration did not differ (P>0.05). Overall animals ovulating (100.0%), interval to ovulation after 2nd PGF2a (64.5±19.5h) and after estrous onset (18.0±9.1h), ovulation rate (1.3±0.5), diameter of ovulatory follicle (8.1±1.1mm) were recorded. Embryo loss occurred before day 30 of pregnancy. Estrus can be efficiently synchronized in nulliparous Alpine and Saanen goats with two doses of prostaglandin 10 days apart.

Abstract
The aim of this investigation was to optimize fixed-time insemination in goats by clustering ovulations in prostaglandin F(2α)-synchronized goats either with gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) or human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The underlying intention was to reduce the incidence of short cycles by providing a more sustained stimulation of the corpus luteum by substituting the commonly used GnRH with longer-acting hCG. It was conjectured that this might render the corpus luteum less prone to premature regression. Sixty pluriparous does were administered 5 mg of the prostaglandin F(2α) preparation dinoprost (Dinolytic; Pharmacia and Upjohn, Erlangen, Germany) during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle. Twenty of these does were administered 0.004 mg of the GnRH analog buserelin (Receptal; Intervet, Unterschleissheim, Germany) 48 hours later; another 20 does received 500 IU hCG (Chorulon; Intervet, Unterschleissheim, Germany) instead. Sixteen hours later the does were inseminated with frozen-thawed semen. The remaining 20 does served as controls and were inseminated 16-18 h after the onset of detected estrus. All 60 treated goats displayed estrous symptoms, the time of onset being similar for all groups (42.6, 37.6, and 40.5 hours after treatment for GnRH-treated, hCG-treated, and control does, respectively). The duration of estrus in the GnRH-treated group was 10 h less than in the other groups (45.1 vs. 56.4 and 54.4 h, P < 0.05). The number of ovulations (assessed by ultrasound monitoring) did not differ among groups (2.4, 2.1, and 2.5, P > 0.05). Monitoring of serum progesterone revealed that the incidence of corpus luteum insufficiency was significantly higher in GnRH- and hCG-treated does than in the control group (40% and 35% vs. 5%, P < 0.05). The pregnancy rate was 50% in the GnRH and 35% in the hCG group as compared with 60% in the controls. Corresponding kidding rates were 40%, 35%, and 60% (P > 0.05). When disregarding does with corpus luteum insufficiency, pregnancy rates would have been 83%, 54%, and 63%, and kidding rates 67%, 54%, and 63%, respectively. The average number of kids born was 1.88, 1.71, and 1.83, respectively (P > 0.05). It may be concluded that fixed time insemination of cycling does treated with prostaglandin F(2α) during the luteal phase, followed by ovulation induction with GnRH or hCG, would be an effective management tool if it were possible to control the high incidence of corpus luteum insufficiency. The attempt to achieve this by substituting GnRH with hCG, was not met with success. Until a solution for the problem has been found, it is advisable to inseminate prostaglandin-synchronized does 16-18 hours after the onset of detected estrus.

Abstract
Two experiments were carried out on Ionica dairy goats in order to test the efficiency of: (1) short term-5-day combined progestogen-PGF2α-GnRH treatments on induction/synchronization of oestrus and fertility after natural mating in lactating goats and during the transition period (Experiment 1); (2) short term-9-day FGA-PGF2α-eCG treatments on synchronizing oestrus and ovulation (Experiment 2.1) and artificial insemination (AI) fixed time system in synchronized does (Experiment 2.2), during the breeding season. In Experiment 1, four treatment groups (N=24) were considered: (1) FPe-11d - control, FGA intravaginal sponges (11 days)+PGF2α (9th d)+eCG (11th d); (2) FPe-5d, FGA (5 days)+PGF2α (5th d)+eCG (5th d); (3) PFe-5d, PGF2α (D0)+FGA (5 days)+eCG (5th d); (4) GPe-5d, GnRH (D0)+PGF2α (5th d)+eCG (5th d). Goats were checked for oestrus and naturally mated. The occurrence of oestrus was 75.0, 78.3, 86.4, and 58.3% for groups 1-4, respectively, with significant differences (P<0.05) between groups 3 and 4. Interval to oestrus was earlier (P<0.05) in GPE-5d than in FPe-11d control group. There were no differences between the groups (P>0.05) in fertility or in prolificacy. In Experiment 2.1, 22 goats were subdivided into two treatment groups (N=11): (T1) FPe-11d (control), FGA (11 days)+PGF2α (9th d)+eCG (11th d); (T2) FPe-9d, FGA (9 days)+PGF2α (7th d)+eCG (9th d). Oestrus and ovulation times were monitored every 4h; ovulation rate was also determined. The induction of oestrus ranged from 91 to 100% and all goats ovulated. Intervals to oestrus, from the onset of oestrus to ovulation, from sponge removal to ovulation, and ovulation rates were 28.2±4.9 and 26.0±4.0h, 25.3±9.2 and 28.9±7.4h, 53.5±7.6 and 54.9±7.1h, 3.7±1.6 and 2.4±1.4 corpora lutea (P<0.05) for T1 and T2, respectively. In T2 a great abnormal ovulatory response was observed. In Experiment 2.2, 48 goats were synchronized with FPe-9d treatment and subjected to AI, performed 50h after s.r. with frozen semen, and subdivided into 2 AI system groups (N=24): T3, exocervical AI (100×10(6)Spz/doe); T4, intrauterine AI (20×10(6)Spz/doe). Fertility rate was higher (P<0.05) in T4. It seems that short term-5-day combined progestogen-PGF2α-GnRH-eCG treatments need to be investigated for AI fixed time.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare ovarian response and embryo yield of Day 0 protocol in Angora goats (AG) and indigenous Kilis goats (KG) in the non-breeding season. A total of 16 Angora goats (AG group) and 11 Kilis goats (KG group) were used in this study. In the synchronization process, after controlled internal drug release withdrawal, when estrus signs were observed, natural mating was performed. Ovarian response was determined by synchronized laparotomy 6 days after natural mating, and number of corpora lutea (CL) was recorded. Embryos were collected and morphologically evaluated by stereomicroscope. Synchronization rates did not differ between AG (88%, 14/16) and KG group (91%, 10/11). In AG and KG groups, the proportion of CL on the right (44% and 53%, respectively) and left (56% and 47%, respectively) ovaries were similar. The CL number per animal did not differ significantly between the two breeds and was determined as 4.4 ± 0.90 in AG group and 6.4 ± 1.44 in KG group. Transferable embryo yields were significantly higher in AG group (31/42, 74%) compared to KG group (16/46, 35%) in the non-breeding season (P < 0.01). In conclusion, it is suggested that the day 0 protocol can be used for goat superovulation in the non-breeding season; however, transferable embryo yields are affected by the breed.

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to determine the possible effects of progestagen oestrous synchronization on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression during sheep luteogenesis and the peri-implantation period and the relationship with luteal function. At days 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 21 of pregnancy, the ovaries from 30 progestagen treated and 30 ewes cycling after cloprostenol injection were evaluated by ultrasonography and, thereafter, collected and processed for immunohistochemical evaluation of VEGF; blood samples were drawn for evaluating plasma progesterone. The progestagen-treated group showed smaller corpora lutea than cloprostenol-treated and lower progesterone secretion. The expression of VEGF in the luteal cells increased with time in the cloprostenol group, but not in the progestagen-treated group, which even showed a decrease between days 11 and 13. In progestagen-treated sheep, VEGF expression in granulosa-derived parenchymal lobule capillaries was correlated with the size of the luteal tissue, larger corpora lutea had higher expression, and tended to have a higher progesterone secretion. In conclusion, the current study indicates the existence of deleterious effects from exogenous progestagen treatments on progesterone secretion from induced corpora lutea, which correlate with alterations in the expression of VEGF in the luteal tissue and, this, presumably in the processes of neoangiogenesis and luteogenesis.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare the efficiency of oestrus induction protocols on Kilis dairy goats kept on a goat farm situated close to Kilis, Turkey. Eighty goats were assigned randomly into four groups of 20 animals each in a factorial arrangement: (i) untreated control (CON), (ii) melatonin implant (MEL), (iii) CIDR-G (CIDR) and (iv) melatonin implant plus CIDR-G (MC). Experiments were performed in mid-anoestrus season under natural photoperiod environment. The differences among treatment groups in oestrus response were significant. Oestrus response was higher in the MC group than in other groups (p < 0.05). A significant difference was observed in the time interval from cessation of treatment to the onset of oestrus among treatments. The CIDR-G treatment reduced intervals from buck introduction to oestrus. The time to onset of oestrus in both the MC and CIDR groups was significantly shorter, compared with the MEL and CON groups (p < 0.05). The number of does kidding and fertility were not different among treatment groups (p > 0.05). Fecundity was similar among goats in all groups. Prolificacy and twining rates showed similar trends as fecundity rates, with no differences (p > 0.05) between treatments. The results of this study showed that oestrus in Kilis does can be effectively induced by using melatonin and CIDR combined treatment, and fertility will not be adversely affected. However, this treatment did not improve fecundity, prolificacy and twining rates.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to investigate whether the use of intravaginal sponge for estrous synchronization of goats causes oxidative stress, and to examine the effect of administering vitamin E during preovulatory period on reproductive performance of estrous synchronized goats. Estrus was synchronized in 36 non-lactating adult does using intravaginal sponges containing 30 mg of fluorogestane acetate (FGA) for 14 days. All females received 500 IU of eCG at the sponge withdrawal. The goats were allocated at random to two groups balanced for breed, age and body weight. Treatment group (n=18) received 200mg of vitamin E i.m. at the time of sponge removal and again at the time of second artificial insemination. The other 18 goats (control) were administered 1 ml of physiological saline instead of vitamin E on each of these two occasions. All does in estrus was intracervically inseminated at 12 and 24h after the onset of estrus. Blood samples were collected every 72h during the experimental period for evaluation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and vitamin E concentrations. Serum MDA level increased and vitamin E concentration decreased during the period of vaginal sponge application. Following the sponge removal, MDA level declined rapidly to below basal level in the treatment group but remained high in the control group. Conversely, vitamin E concentration increased in the treatment group after the sponge withdrawal and remained at a low level in the control group. No statistically significant differences (P>0.05) were observed between groups in terms of estrous response, conception rate, gestation length or kidding rate. However, the number of multiple births (70.0% versus 50.0%) and prolificacy rate (2.40+/-0.37 versus 1.63+/-0.26 kids per kidding) were significantly higher (P<0.05) for the treatment group than those of the control group. The results indicate that the use of intravaginal sponges for estrous synchronization of goats causes an increase in level of oxidative stress. However, the vitamin E treatment during preovulatory period can prevent the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and it may improve the multiple birth rates and the number of kids born in estrous synchronized goats.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different doses dexamethasone and progestagen-PMSG on fertility and prolificacy in Kivircik ewes during the breeding season. For the experiment, 100 ewes were divided into four groups, with 25 females in each group. Groups were fluorgestone acetate (FGA, 30 mg), administered via intravaginal sponges. Experimental groups 2, 3 and 4 mL dexamethasone injection were given 72 h before mating season. The fertility rates control, 2, 3 and 4 mL were 88.0, 92.0, 100.0 and 100.0%, respectively (p<0.05). The prolificacy rates for the same groups were 122.7, 130.4, 144.0 and 156.0%, respectively (p<0.01). The injections dexamethasone significantly increased lamb birth weight and daily weight gain for 60 days (p<0.05).

Abstract
The study reports on differences in the dynamics of growth and functionality of preovulatory follicles in response to oestrous synchronization, either by the administration of two doses of prostaglandin or by an intravaginal progestagen sponge, in goats. The progestagen-treated group (n = 8) showed more follicles of preovulatory size (> or =5.5 mm) than the cloprostenol group (n = 8) during the follicular phase (4.5 +/- 0.6 vs 1.9 +/- 0.2, p < 0.01). The diameters of the largest follicles (LF1, LF2 and LF3) were also larger in the progestagen group (LF1, 7.8 +/- 0.3 vs 7.0 +/- 0.2 mm, p < 0.05; LF2, 6.7 +/- 0.2 vs 5.6 +/- 0.2 mm, p < 0.01; LF3, 5.5 +/- 0.3 vs 4.2 +/- 0.2 mm, p < 0.01). The study of the preovulatory follicles showed that 27.2% (3/11) of the follicles were in the static phase in the cloprostenol group, whilst 71.4% (10/14) were static in progestagen group (p < 0.05). Higher plasma oestradiol levels were recorded in the progestagen-treated goats during the 48 h prior to cloprostenol injection or progestagen withdrawal (4.2 +/- 0.4 vs 3.0 +/- 0.2 pg/ml, p < 0.05). In conclusion, goats with oestrus synchronized by progestagen showed a higher number of preovulatory-sized follicles, but a decreased oestradiol secretion when compared with does with oestrus synchronized by using prostaglandin analogues. These would support the development of alternative protocols for assisted reproduction.

Abstract
A trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of FGA (Fluorogestone acetate) and CIDR (Controlled internal drug release) on the induction of estrus and pregnancy and fecundity rates of the Sanjabi and Lori sheep. A total of 360 Sanjabi and Lori sheep were randomly grouped into two treatments with intravaginal devices inserted for 13 days: Group FGA (40 mg FGA, n = 180) and Group CIDR (n = 180). All ewes received an i.m. injection of 400 IU eCG (equine chorionic gonadotrophin) at devices removal. Estrous was assessed by exposing all ewes to vasectomized rams at 12 h intervals. Cervical artificial insemination was performed 12 h after estrus onset. The overall estrus response was 72.5%. The source of progestin did not influence the efficiency of estrus response but a significant difference (p<0.05) was found between the breed groups (Lori: 88.6%, Sanjabi: 58.3%). Among the sheep that received either CIDR or FGA, estrus response was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the Lori (CIDR: 82.2%, FGA: 91.1%) than in the Sanjabi (CIDR: 64.4%, FGA: 52.2%) breed. The lambing and fecundity rates for all groups were 60.2% and 1.2 +/- 0.03, respectively. No significant differences in term of the lambing and fecundity rates were recorded between CIDR and FGA groups and among Lori and Sanjabi breed. The results of this study indicate the source of progestin or sheep breed did not influence the pregnancy and fecundity rates. The sheep breed influences the estrous response rate while the source of progestin did not affect the estrous response.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of administering increasing doses of royal jelly (RJ) on reproductive parameters in ewes. Additionally, this study compared using RJ vs. equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) in estrous cycle control. In May (transitional period between anestrous and the breeding season) 37 multiparous, winter-lambing Awassi ewes 3-6 years of age (average body weight of 53+/-1.2 kg) were fitted with intravaginal flourogestone acetate-impregnated sponges (FGA, 40 mg) for 12 days. Ewes were randomly assigned into five treatment groups to receive no RJ (CON, n=7), 250 mg RJ/d (RJ250, n=8), 500 mg RJ/d (RJ500, n=8), 750 mg RJ/d (RJ750, n=7), or 600IU eCG (eCG, n=7). Royal jelly was administrated orally on daily basis when sponges were in place while eCG was administered on the day of sponge withdrawal (d 0). Behavioral estrus was checked using fertile Awassi rams at 6h intervals for 5 days beginning on d 1. Interval from d 0 to onset of estrus was shorter (P<0.05) in eCG than in CON and RJ250 groups. No differences in the onset of estrus were detected among the RJ-treated groups. The intervals from d 0 to first progesterone rise were shorter (P<0.05) in the eCG-treated compared with RJ-treated and control ewes (100+/-15.3, 138.4+/-14, 135.7+/-15, 155.6+/-15, 154.4+/-15.1h in eCG, CON, RJ250, RJ500, and RJ750, groups, respectively). The overall pregnancy rate from mating at induced estrus was 75.7% (28/37). Of these ewes, 23/37 (64.8%) lambed within 155 days following d 0. Lambing rate was higher (P<0.05) in the RJ500 group compared with controls. Lambing rate from mating at induced estrus was 2/7 (28.5%), 4/8 (50%), 8/8 (100%), 4/7 (57%), and 5/7 (71%) in CON, RJ250, RJ500, RJ750, and eCG groups, respectively. Results of the present study demonstrate that eCG but not RJ was effective in improving estrus expression in ewes during the transition between the non-breeding and breeding seasons. Royal jelly may be effective in improving pregnancy and lambing rates but further studies are required to confirm such findings.

Abstract
The effect of day of induced luteolysis on follicle dynamics, oestrus behaviour and ovulatory response in goats was studied by administering cloprostenol on Day 5 (n=10), Day 11 (n=10), or Day 16 (n=10) after detection of oestrus. Stage of the luteal phase affected the interval from cloprostenol injection to onset of oestrus, with behavioural oestrus being observed earlier in goats treated early in the luteal phase (43.4+/-3.2 h on Day 5 versus 57.0+/-2.6 h on Day 11 and 56.7+/-2.7 h on Day 16, P<0.01). The group treated on Day 5 also tended to have a higher proportion of does which exhibited oestrus behaviour (P=0.07) and ovulation (P=0.06). In all the cycles, at least one of the ovulatory follicles arose from antral follicles present in the ovary at cloprostenol injection. In 66.7% of monovular cycles, the ovulatory follicle was the largest follicle on the day of luteolysis. In 33.3% of polyovulatory cycles, one of the ovulatory follicles was the largest one present when cloprostenol was administered. In 80% of polyovulatory cycles, the second ovulatory follicle was present on the day of luteolysis; but in the three remaining cycles, the second ovulatory follicle emerged later. This shows that the largest follicle may not exert dominance over other follicles in the goat. Evaluation of follicular dynamics in different phases of luteal activity in current experiment showed an attenuation of dominance in the mid-luteal period. In does treated early or late in the luteal phase, the number of new growing follicles decreased with time (P<0.01 and 0.05, respectively), the mean number of follicles reaching 4-5mm in size also decreased (P<0.001 and 0.01, respectively) and the number of regressing follicles increased (P<0.05). These effects did not reach statistical significance in does treated in the mid-luteal phase.

Abstract
Ovarian follicular dynamics and fertility are unaffected by the presence or absence of a corpus luteum during synchronization of estrus with progestins in goats. On day 5 of the estrous cycle (estrus= day 0), a gestagen-containing sponge was inserted in the vagina for 11 days. To remove corpora lutea, one group of goats (CL-, n=41) received 7.5 mg of luprostiol on days 7 and 8 of the estrous cycle. The second group of goats retained the CL (CL+, n=38). Growth and development of follicles > or =4 mm in diameter were measured daily from onset of estrus to 2 days after subsequent ovulation in seven goats from each group, using rectal ultrasonography. Estrus was detected by the use of a reproductively sterilized buck and estrous does were subsequently mated. The number of waves of follicular development (CL- =3.57+/-0.2 versus CL+ =3.14+/-0.14; P>0.05) did not differ between groups. The second wave of follicular development was present at the time of progesterone decline in the CL- group and neither its duration (CL- =4.8+/-0.4 versus CL+=5.6+/-0.7 days; P>0.05) nor the day of commencement of the third wave of follicular development (CL -=11.6+/-0.7 versus CL+=11.8+/-0.6; P>0.05) were altered by the concentration of endogenous progesterone. The pregnancy rate was similar between the two groups. (CL-=68.29% versus CL+=65.79%; P>0.05). Thus, in goats, ovarian follicular dynamics and fertility were not altered by the presence or absence of a corpus luteum during estrous synchronization.
