Skin and Soft Tissue Lesions in a District Hospital in Central Nigeria: A Histopathological Study

Introduction. Skin and soft tissue diseases form a large and heterogeneous group of mesenchymal extraskeletal and dermatologic lesions in humans. Diseases of the skin and soft tissue can develop virtually anywhere in the body, extremities, the trunk, the retroperitoneum, the head, and the neck. Our study aims to review skin and soft tissue specimens from our centre describing the histopathological patterns.

Benign tumours of the hand are a common disease, usually corresponding to nodes. Other etiologies are less common. Lipomas of the hand are a rare feature, especially in the fingers. We present four cases of digital lipomas and a review of surgery of lipomas over the past ten years, and of the literature.

Localized depigmentation after steroid injection of a ganglion cyst on the hand

Presented is the case of a man who had localized depigmentation after local injection of triamcinolone diacetate. Search of the literature indicates that this is a rare complication of such therapy. Localized depigmentation may have important cultural implications for dark-skinned patients. There is some experimental evidence that less-potent and shorter-acting steroid preparations have a lower likelihood for depigmenting side effects, and such agents may be more appropriate when injecting subcutaneous structures to prevent this complication.
