Fate of 45Ca-labeled calcium hydroxide in a root canal filling paste embedded in rat subcutaneous tissues

In Search of a Novel Substitute: Clinical and Radiological Success of Lesion Sterilization and Tissue Repair with Modified 3Mix-MP Antibiotic Paste and Conventional Pulpectomy for Primary Molars with Pulp Involvement with 18 Months Follow-up

Objectives:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic success of zinc oxide (ZnO)-ozonated oil, modified 3Mix antibiotic paste, and vitapex in the treatment of primary molars requiring pulpectomy.

Methods:

Sixty-four primary molars of forty-three healthy children aged between 4 and 8 years with primary molars requiring root canal procedure were treated with ZnO-ozonated oil, modified 3Mix-MP antibiotic paste, and vitapex. Clinical follow up was done at 1, 6,12 months and 18 months while radiographical follow-up was done at 6,12 and 18 months, respectively.

Results:

The results showed that the clinical success rates of ZnO-ozonated oil, modified 3Mix-MP paste and vitapex were 95.5%,89.5% and 100% respectively and radiographical success rates were 94.4%,80.95% and 100% respectively after 18 months period of observation.

Conclusion:

The overall success rates of ZnO-ozonated oil, vitapex and modified 3Mix antibiotic paste were comparable.

Calcium hydroxide-based root canal sealers: a review

The aim of this review was to consider laboratory experiments and clinical studies of calcium hydroxide-based root canal sealers. An extensive search of the endodontic literature was made to identify publications related to calcium hydroxide-based root canal sealers. The articles were assessed for the outcome of laboratory and clinical studies on their biological properties and physical characteristics. Comparative studies with other sealers were also considered. Several studies were evaluated covering different properties of calcium hydroxide-based sealers including physical properties, biocompatibility, leakage, adhesion, solubility, antibacterial properties, and periapical healing effect. Calcium hydroxide-based root canal sealers have a variety of physical and biological properties. Comparative studies reveal their mild cytotoxicity, but their antibacterial effects are variable. Further research is required to establish the tissue healing properties of calcium hydroxide in root canal sealers.

Calcium hydroxide pastes: classification and clinical indications

REVIEW ARTICLE: Calcium hydroxide has been used in endodontology for many years. The aim of this paper is to review the various formulations of calcium hydroxide that have been described, with specific reference to the vehicle used to carry the compound. The requirements for a vehicle are described, and ex vivo and in vivo studies reviewed. Vehicles can be classified into aqueous, viscous and oily, the clinical properties of calcium hydroxide changing depending on the vehicle. The review also describes the use of various active components that have been added to calcium hydroxide, including antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agents. This review will help clinicians to make informed judgements about which formulations of calcium hydroxide should be used for specific endodontic procedures.

Apexification: case report

Apexification is a process/procedure well recognized and accepted by clinicians and researchers alike. Calcium hydroxide is most commonly used to induce an apical hard tissue barrier which may be composed of different tissues but its mechanism of action is still unknown. The epithelial cell rests of Malassez have been implicated in apexification although case reports exist which apparently dispute this. The following case report demonstrates an unusual case of apexification following root filling, surgery and retreatment where the role of the epithelial cell rests of Malassez is discussed.

Continuously infused calcium hydroxide: its influence on hard tissue repair

To study the ability of calcium hydroxide to promote hard tissue repair, Alza Alzet Osmotic Pumps, implanted in Sprague-Dawley rats, were used to deliver either calcium hydroxide and glycerol, barium hydroxide and glycerol, tetracycline and glycerol, or glycerol only to a standardized round bur defect in a rat femur. The pumps infused one of the reagents into the defects continuously over a 4-wk experimental period. The effects of each reagent on the healing of the bony defects were compared by histological evaluation. The Alza Osmotic Pump proved to be an effective method to deliver an agent to an experimental site. Our preliminary findings from a limited sample size indicated that calcium hydroxide contributed to a more complete osseous repair than either barium hydroxide or tetracycline. Barium hydroxide with a sustained pH equivalent to calcium hydroxide showed no greater healing than the controls. Tetracycline results were also similar to controls.

Calcium hydroxide in restorative dentistry

This paper reviews the various calcium hydroxide preparations available for use in restorative dentistry and their constituents. The significance of individual constituents in relation to the properties of such materials and their mode of therapeutic action with respect to the dentine pulpal response and antibacterial activity is discussed. Applications of calcium hydroxide in restorative dentistry are also reviewed.

Effects of the penetration of a root canal filling material into the mandibular canal. 1. Tissue reaction to the material

The root canal filling paste Vitapex (Neo Dental Chemical Products Co., Tokyo), made of calcium hydroxide and iodoform with the addition of silicone oil, was experimentally introduced into the mandibular canals of 29 dogs. Tissue reactions to the paste were examined by radiography, histopathology, and electron microscopy. These examinations revealed that the paste was phagocytosed by macrophages and, in general, was gradually resorbed over time. The paste was also found to cause heterotopic calcification and/or ossification within the area of original penetration.

Apical closure of mature molar roots with the use of calcium hydroxide

Calcium hydroxide may induce apical root closure in affected mature teeth as well as in immature teeth. Once an apical hard tissue barrier is formed, a permanent root canal filling can be safely condensed. Two cases are described in which calcium hydroxide induced apical root closure in mature molar teeth where the apical constriction was lost because of chronic inflammatory process.
