Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the activity, distribution, and colocalization of cathepsin K (catK) and matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) in both intact and eroded dentin in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eroded dentin was obtained by consecutive treatment with 5% citric acid (pH = 2.3) for 7 days, while intact dentin remained untreated. Pulverized dentin powder (1.0 g) was extracted from both intact and eroded dentin using 5 mL of 50 mM Tris-HCl buffer (0.2 g/1 mL, pH = 7.4) for 60 h to measure the activity of catK and MMPs spectrofluorometrically. In addition, three 200-μm-thick dentin slices were prepared from intact and eroded dentin for double-labeling immunofluorescence to evaluate the distribution and colocalization of catK and MMPs (MMP-2 and MMP-9). The distribution and colocalization of enzymes were analyzed using inverted confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), with colocalization rates quantified using Leica Application Suite Advanced Fluorescent (LAS AF) software. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the fluorescence data related to enzyme activity (α = 0.05). RESULTS The activity of catK and MMPs was significantly increased in eroded dentin compared with intact dentin. After erosive attacks, catK, MMP-2, and MMP-9 were prominently localized in the eroded regions. The colocalization rates of catK with MMP-2 and MMP-9 were 13- and 26-fold higher in eroded dentin, respectively, than in intact dentin. CONCLUSIONS Erosive attacks amplified the activity of catK and MMPs in dentin while also altering their distribution patterns. Colocalization between catK and MMPs increased following erosive attacks. CLINICAL RELEVANCE CatK, MMP-2, and MMP-9 likely play synergistic roles in the pathophysiology of dentin erosion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purposes of this in vitro study were to evaluate the tubule plugging efficiencies and effects on the surface roughness of dentin of different dentin desensitizing agents (DDAs; Teethmate Desensitizer, Kuraray; Gluma Desensitizer, Kulzer; Clinpro White Varnish, 3M ESPE; Enamelast, Ultradent) and the Er,Cr:YSGG laser (Biolase, Waterlase), both alone and in combination with DDAs, after application and after an erosion-abrasion cycle. METHODS AND MATERIALS For surface roughness examinations, superficial buccal dentin specimens were divided into 10 groups: the control, Teethmate Desensitizer, Gluma Desensitizer, Enamelast, Clipro White Varnish, Er,Cr:YSGG Laser, Teethmate Desensitizer-Laser, Gluma Desensitizer-Laser, and Enamelast-Laser, and Clinpro White Varnish-Laser groups. Profilometric analyses and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examinations were performed after applications and after a 5-day erosive-abrasive cycle. For the statistical analysis of surface roughness measurements, 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), 1-way ANOVA, and Tukey post hoc test were used. RESULTS Among the treatments, only DDAs alone did not cause increase in surface roughness after application. All of the laser applications increased the surface roughness of dentin, and after the erosion-abrasion cycle, all of the test groups had increased surface roughness. However, SEM images showed that morphological changes were less frequently observed in all of the experimental groups than in the control group. In addition, all of the laser-DDA combinations had stronger tubule occlusion effects than did DDAs alone, even after erosion-abrasion. CONCLUSIONS All of the test treatments showed protective effects on dentin surfaces against the negative effects of erosion-abrasion. The addition of the laser to DDA applications increased tubular plugging efficiencies of DDAs, and the tubule plugs of the combination treatments were resistant to the erosion-abrasion cycle.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of a glutaraldehyde-based desensitizer on the postoperative sensitivity (POS) in posterior resin composite restorations up to 12 months using a universal adhesive (Tetric N-Bond Universal) with selective enamel etching (SE) or an etch-and-rinse (ER) strategy. METHODS Class I and class II resin composite restorations (n = 220) at least 3 mm deep were inserted in 55 subjects. The universal adhesive was applied using the SE (self-etch strategy on dentin with selective enamel etching) or the ER strategy, with or without prior application of a glutaraldehyde-based desensitizer (Gluma Desensitizer - GL) to form groups SEGL and ERGL. A bulk-fill resin composite (Tetric NCeram Bulk Fill) was used for all restorations. Spontaneous POS was assessed 7 days after the restorative procedure using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). After 7, 14, and 30 days of completing each restoration, the subjects were reassessed to evaluate POS caused by stimulation with an air blast, horizontal and vertical percussion. In addition, marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, fracture, and recurrence of caries were evaluated using the FDI (World Dental Federation) criteria after 7 days and at 12 months. RESULTS No significant spontaneous or stimuli-induced POS was observed when restorations with or without GL were compared (p>0.05). A higher risk of spontaneous POS was observed within 7 days (40.0%; 95% CI 28.1 to 53.1), without statistically significant differences among groups. None of the participants reported POS at 12 months, however five restorations were considered clinically unsatisfactory (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The previous application of GL did not significantly reduce spontaneous or stimuli-induced POS in posterior resin composite restorations at any time, regardless of the adhesive strategy used. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The use of a glutaraldehyde-based desensitizing agent did not generate lower incidence of postoperative sensitivity in resin composite posterior restorations.

Abstract
This in vitro study examined the sealing ability of different desensitizing agents under a chemo-mechanical stress condition. For the study, a total of 144 extracted, caries-free human third molars were used to produce 1 mm-thick dentin discs. The specimens were divided randomly into four groups: Superseal (SS), Gluma (GL), Gluma Self-etch (GS), and Tooth Coat (TC). For each group, the permeability was measured before and after applying the desensitizer, after being exposed to Coca Cola for 5 minutes, and after 3150 strokes of a brushing abrasion. The decrease in permeability after the erosive and abrasive stress was analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test. As a result, the dentin permeability decreased significantly for all desensitizers immediately after application (p < 0.05). SS and GS showed a significant difference in permeability reduction observed immediately after application and after acid action with Coca Cola (p < 0.05). After brushing abrasion, the permeability reduction decreased significantly for all desensitizers tested in this study (p < 0.05). TC showed the largest decrease in dentinal permeability compared to that of the other desensitizers and the differences were significant after brushing abrasion (p < 0.05). All tested desensitizers were effective in reducing dentin permeability. The behavioral characteristics under erosive and abrasive stress varied according to the products used. TC exhibited excellent sealing ability among the other desensitizers.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of SnCl2/AmF pretreatment on short- and long-term bond strength of resin composite to eroded dentin mediated by two self-etch, MDP-containing adhesive systems. 184 dentin specimens were produced from extracted human molars. Half the specimens (n = 92) were artificially eroded, and half were left untreated. For both substrates, half the specimens were pretreated with SnCl2/AmF, and half were left untreated. The specimens were treated with Clearfil SE Bond or Scotchbond Universal prior to application of resin composite. Microtensile bond strength (μTBS) was measured after 24 h or 1 year. Failure mode was detected and EDX was performed. μTBS results were statistically analyzed (α = 0.05). μTBS was significantly influenced by the dentin substrate (eroded < noneroded dentin) and storage time (24 h > 1 year; p < 0.0001) but not by pretreatment with SnCl2/AmF or adhesive system. The predominant failure mode was adhesive failure at the dentin-adhesive interface. The content of Sn was generally below detection limit. Pretreatment with SnCl2/AmF did not influence short- and long-term bond strength to eroded dentin. Bond strength was reduced after storage for one year, was lower to eroded dentin than to noneroded dentin, and was similar for the two adhesive systems.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of benzalkonium chloride (BAC) modification of two adhesive systems on long-term bond strength to normal and artificially eroded dentin. A total of 128 extracted human molars were sectioned and the buccal and oral surfaces of each molar were ground until the dentin. One half was left untreated (normal dentin) while the other half underwent artificial erosion. Resin composite was bonded to the buccal or oral surface following treatment with Adper Scotchbond 1XT or OptiBond FL without or with 1% BAC incorporation. Shear bond strength (SBS) was measured after 24 h (100% humidity, 37°C) or 1 year (tap water, 37°C). SBS results were statistically analyzed (α = 0.05). SBS was significantly lower to artificially eroded dentin than to normal dentin (p < 0.001). Storage for 1 year had no effect on SBS to normal dentin but led to a significant decrease in SBS to artificially eroded dentin (p < 0.001). BAC incorporation decreased the 24 h SBS to normal dentin (p = 0.018), increased the 24 h SBS to eroded dentin (p = 0.001), and had no effect on the 1-year SBS for either substrate. Consequently, BAC incorporation did not improve bond durability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate dentin protection of different desensitizing varnishes (light- and self-curing) during acid action/abrasion stress and thermocyclic loading in vitro. METHODS Dentin discs of 2 mm thickness were cut from 120 human molars, embedded, and polished. Specimens were randomized into five groups (n=24): A, negative control; B, Gluma Desensitizer; C, Cervitec plus (self-curing); D, Seal&Protect; and E, Admira Protect (light-curing). In groups B-E, varnish was applied on two-thirds of the dentin surface, and one-third acted as internal control. Stress cycle (2 cycles/day) for specimens were as follows: 1, acid action (pH: 2.9: five minutes); 2, remineralization (synthetic saliva: 60 minutes); 3, brushing (100 strokes); 4, thermocycling (five cycles); and 5, remineralization (synthetic saliva: six hours) for each group (n=12) for 30 (15 days) or 60 times (30 days). Specimens were analyzed using an incident light microscope. Substance loss was measured in micrometers. Statistical analysis was performed with the multiple contrast test (p<0.05). RESULTS Groups B and C had a significantly lower dentin loss than A (p<0.01). After 30 days, group A showed the highest dentin loss (p<0.01), whereas the other groups lacked a significant difference regarding their substance loss (dentin and/or varnish; p>0.05). Varnish layer loss was shown for groups D and E with a remaining protective layer; groups A-C showed dentin removal. CONCLUSION All four varnishes are protective compared with an untreated control. Light-curing varnishes might provide higher dentin protection than self-curing materials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The duration of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), the frequency of reflux, the pH and type of acid, and the quality and quantity of saliva affect the severity of dental erosion due to GERD. OBJECTIVE To summarize the diagnostic protocol and treatment of dental erosion due to GERD. METHODS A Medline literature search was performed to identify articles associated with a dental approach to GERD. RESULTS The dental professional must carry out a diagnostic protocol, which includes collecting data on the patient's medical and dietary history, occupational/recreational history, dental history, and oral hygiene methods. Intraoral, head and neck, and salivary function examinations should be performed to expose the dental implications of GERD symptoms. CONCLUSION Diagnosing the cause of erosive tooth wear can help prevent further damage. Patients must be informed about how to prevent GERD.

Abstract
Background Surface sealants have been successfully used in the prevention of erosive tooth wear. However, when multiple tooth surfaces should be sealed, the light-curing procedure is very time-consuming. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether reduced light-curing time (while maintaining similar energy density) has an influence on resin-based surface sealant cytotoxicity. Methods Bovine dentine discs were treated as follows: group 1: untreated, groups 2–5: Seal&Protect and groups 6–9: experimental sealer. Groups 2 and 6 were light-cured (VALO LED light-curing device) for 40 s (1000 mW/cm2), groups 3 and 7 for 10 s (1000 mW/cm2), groups 4 and 8 for 7 s (1400 mW/cm2) and groups 5 and 9 for 3 s (3200 mW/cm2). Later, materials were extracted in culture medium for 24 h, and released lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity as a measure of cytotoxicity was determined photometrically after cells (dental pulp cells and gingival fibroblasts) were exposed to the extracts for 24 h. Three independent experiments, for both sample preparation and cytotoxicity testing, were performed. Results Overall, lowest cytotoxicity was observed for the unsealed control group. No significant influence of light-curing settings on the cytotoxicity was observed (p = 0.537 and 0.838 for pulp cells and gingival fibroblasts, respectively). No significant difference in the cytotoxicity of the two sealants was observed after light-curing with same light-curing settings (group 2 vs. 6, 3 vs. 7, 4 vs. 8 and 5 vs. 9: p > 0.05, respectively). Conclusions Shortening the light-curing time, while maintaining constant energy density, resulted in no higher cytotoxicity of the investigated sealants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To test the durability of sealants applied for prevention of erosive dentine mineral loss under erosive/abrasive conditions. METHODS Forty-eight bovine dentine samples doped with (32)P were randomly allocated to four groups (1-4). All samples performed a de- and remineralizations pre-cycling (6 × 1 min erosion in HCl: pH 3.0, mean time and overnight immersion in artificial saliva) for 1 day. Sealing was done as follows; (1) unsealed, (2) Seal & Protect, (3) K-0184 (experimental sealer) and (4) OptiBond FL. After sealing, samples were immersed in HCl for 3 h (baseline measurement). Then, the following erosive/abrasive and remineralisations cycling was performed for 8 days: 3 h/day erosion with HCl, 600 brushing strokes/day and storage in artificial saliva for the rest of the day. Sealer permeability was evaluated by assignation of (32)P in the acid used for the erosive attacks. RESULTS At baseline, the significantly highest dentine loss was observed for the unsealed control group, while the mineral loss was not statistically significantly different between the sealed groups 2 and 3. At all days of the erosive/abrasive and remineralizations cycling and cumulatively the significantly highest mineral loss was observed for group 1, while the significantly lowest mineral loss was observed for the samples sealed with Seal & Protect (group 2) and K-0184 (group 3). In all groups, no significant increase in the (32)P release was observed. CONCLUSION Surface sealants are able to reduce the erosive dentine mineral loss and maintain this erosion-preventing efficacy over the whole duration (simulating 8 month in-vivo) of the erosive/abrasive cycling.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To give an overview of the impact of erosive conditions on the behavior of tooth-colored restoratives and performance of dental adhesives. METHODS Acid-induced erosive lesions of enamel and dentin often need restorative procedures for rehabilitation. Nowadays, mostly tooth-colored restoratives (ceramics or resin composites), which are adhesively fixed to the dental substrate are used for this purpose. In some cases it might be necessary to seal the exposed dentin before achieving this goal in order to combat hypersensitivities and to protect those teeth from further erosive and abrasive loss. Moreover, it is conceivable that patients will fall back into their old "erosive behavior" after the application of restoratives. The following overview describes in how far intra-oral erosive conditions might affect the integrity of restorative materials, such as composite resins and ceramics, or of dentin sealants. Additionally, the use of erosively altered enamel and dentin as substrate for adhesive technologies is elucidated. RESULTS In the literature, information of the behavior of tooth-colored restoratives under still persisting erosive conditions are limited and mostly based on in vitro-studies. There is information that the adhesion of dental adhesives to eroded dentin is compromised as compared to regular dentin. The impact of erosive conditions relevant for the oral cavity on ceramics and resin composites seems to be rather low, although only few clinical studies are available. SIGNIFICANCE The review showed that erosive conditions might have only little impact on behavior of tooth-colored restorative materials, such as composites and ceramics. Dentin sealants also seem to be rather resistant against erosive conditions and might therefore serve as an intermediary treatment option for exposed dentin surfaces. The adhesion of dentin adhesives to eroded dentin might be increased by mechanical pre-treatment of the substrate, but needs further investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of three different interventions (non-desensitising toothpaste, desensitising toothpaste and professionally applied dentine bonding agent) in reducing dentinal hypersensitivity over a 2-week, 3-month and 6-month-period in a dental practice setting. METHODS This was a randomised controlled, single-blind; parallel-group trial conducted in general dental practice by a single general dental practitioner. Seventy-five subjects were randomly allocated to three groups; non-desensitising toothpaste (NDT), desensitising toothpaste (DT) and professionally applied desensitising agent (DA). Dentinal hypersensitivity was measured using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) to record the response from a standardised short blast of air from a triple syringe. Dentinal hypersensitivity was recorded at baseline, two weeks, three months and six months for all groups. RESULTS Dentinal hypersensitivity reduced significantly (p<0.0001) in both groups DT and DA, in addition the reduction in sensitivity was sustained and continued to improve over a 6-month-period. The greatest reduction in dentinal hypersensitivity was recorded in group DA. CONCLUSIONS The results from this study suggest that application of dentine bonding agents, to teeth diagnosed with dentine hypersensitivity provides the greatest improvement in dentine hypersensitivity at 2 weeks and 6 months. This reduction in dentine hypersensitivity is greater than that achieved by the desensitising toothpaste tested and a non-desensitising toothpaste.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Phosphoric acid-Bioglass 45S5 paste can create an interaction layer formed of calcium-phosphate crystals on the dentin surface. In this study, the efficiency of decreasing the dentin permeability exerted by the interaction layer formed between bioglass and dentin was compared to a resin-containing oxalate desensitizing agent (MS Coat One) and a resin-free oxalate desensitizing agent (Super Seal). METHODS Dentin permeability was measured before/after a brushing abrasion challenge, followed by examining the top and the fractured dentin surfaces with a field emission scanning electron microscope. Moreover, the chemical nature of the compounds formed on top of the dentin surface was examined using the field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDS), and the crystalline structures of the dentinal surfaces were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). RESULTS The results showed that application of 45S5 bioglass paste to dentin was able to occlude patent dentinal tubule orifices with a layer of calcium-phosphate crystals, while the oxalate containing agents were able to form small crystals which were found in dentinal tubule orifices and scattered along the superficial parts of the dentinal tubule lumen. The brushing-abrasion challenge significantly increased the permeability of dentin treated by Super Seal and MS Coat One, while these challenges had no significant effect on the dentin permeability of specimens treated with 45S5 bioglass paste. SIGNIFICANCE The new technique provided better durability than two products available on the market. Moreover, our previous research showed the biocompatibility of using this technique on dental pulp cells, suggesting that this technique can aid in treating dentin hypersensitivity cases.

Abstract
Objectives. To investigate if reducing the light-curing time (while maintaining similar energy density) of resin-based surface sealants influences their erosion-preventive potential and mechanical stability after thermomechanical loading. Methods. Dentine samples were treated as follows: group 1—untreated, groups 2–4—Seal&Protect, groups 5–7—experimental sealer, and groups 8–10—Syntac Classic system. Groups 2, 5 and 8 were light-cured for 10 s (1000 mW/cm2), groups 3, 6 and 9 for 7 s (1400 mW/cm2), and groups 4, 7, and 10 for 3 s (3200 mW/cm2). After water storage (7 d), first measurement was performed to evaluate baseline permeability of the sealants. After a thermomechanical loading (5000 cycles, 50/5°C, 12000 brushing strokes) a second evaluation of permeability was conducted (measurement 2). Permeability was tested by storing the samples in HCl (pH 2.3; 24 h) and measuring the dentine calcium release by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results. For the first and second measurements, no influence of light-exposure time on permeability was observed (ANOVA: P > 0.05). No significant difference in the stability of the respective sealants was observed when light-cured for different durations. Conclusion. Shortening the light-curing time, while maintaining energy density constant, has no influence on permeability and stability of the investigated sealants.

Abstract
Objectives This study aims to evaluate the influence of different surface preparation techniques on long-term bonding effectiveness to eroded dentin. Materials and methods Dentin specimens were eroded by pH cycling or were left untreated as control, respectively. Five different “preparation” techniques were applied: (1) cleaning with pumice, (2) air abrasion, (3) silicon polisher, (4) proxo-shape, and (5) diamond bur. The three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive OptiBond FL (O-FL; Kerr) and the mild two-step self-etch adhesive Clearfil SE Bond (C-SE; Kuraray) were evaluated. Micro-tensile bond strength was measured after water storage for 24 h and 1 year. Fracture analysis was performed by stereomicroscopy and SEM. Interfaces were characterized by TEM. Differences were statistically analyzed with a linear mixed effects model (α = 0.05). Results Erosion reduced bond strength in all groups, but this effect was less prominent when eroded dentin was prepared by diamond bur. Storage lowered bond strength in almost all groups significantly, but this ageing effect was more prominent for the eroded surfaces than for non-eroded controls. Whereas after 1-year control specimens revealed superior bond strength with the three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (O-FL), the mild two-step self-etch adhesive (C-SE) revealed a better 1-year bond strength to eroded dentin. The interface at eroded dentin appeared very prone to degradation as was shown by the increased amount of adhesive failures and by the silver infiltration detected by TEM. Conclusions and clinical relevance Although a minimally invasive approach should clinically always be strived for, superficial preparation (or minimal roughening) with a diamond bur is recommendable for long-term bonding to eroded dentin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES 45S5 bioglass mixed with 50% phosphoric acid has been suggested to treat dentine hypersensitivity and incipient enamel caries. This study is going to evaluate the biocompatibility of using the aforementioned technique with the rat pulpal cells. METHODS The relative cytotoxicity of 45S5 bioglass on rat dental pulp cells was compared to the cytotoxicity of a temporary filling material (Caviton; GC, Japan), Type 1 glass ionomer cement (Fuji I; GC, Tokyo, Japan) and commercial desensitising agent (SuperSeal; Phoenix Dental, Fenton, MI, USA) using a transwell insert model. Cell viability was measured by means of a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The number of viable cell counts were compared using one way ANOVA (p<0.05). The morphological alterations of the pulp cells were observed directly by phase contrast microscope. RESULTS The results of this study indicated that cell viability recorded by the 45S5 bioglass paste group did not differ significantly from those of the Caviton, glass ionomer or superseal, moreover pulpal cells microscopic analysis revealed that 45S5 bioglass elicited minimal toxic effect. CONCLUSIONS 45S5 bioglass paste can serve as a biocompatible material that can potentially be used safely on dentine.

Abstract
Bioglass 45S5 is a bioactive glass that can create a layer of calcium-phosphate crystals on mineralized hard tissues. In this study, 45S5 bioglass was mixed with phosphoric acid and irradiated with CO2 laser and examined as a possible aid in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity. The dentinal surface modified by the aforementioned technique was chemically and micro-morphologically examined with a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscope (EDS), and the crystalline structures of the examined dentinal surfaces were examined by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Moreover, the mechanical properties of the newly formed layer were examined by nanoindentation. The results showed that 45S5 bioglass could occlude the dentinal tubule orifices with calcium-phosphate crystals. The application of CO2 laser potentially improved the mechanical organization of these crystals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine whether a dentine bonding agent (DBA) had an effect in reducing fluid filtration under cemented provisional crowns. METHODS Crown preparations on 34 premolars, randomly allocated to two equal-sized test and control groups, were assessed for dentine permeability by a fluid filtration technique. In the test group, prepared crowns were acid-etched and then treated with a DBA (Prime & Bond NT). In the control group, no such DBA was applied. Provisional crowns were cemented on both groups of teeth using non-eugenol zinc oxide cement. Fluid filtration rates were measured repeatedly after crown preparation, at cementation, 1 h, 1 day, 1 week and 3 weeks following crown cementation for both groups. Filtration rates were also measured after acid-etching and dentine bonding for the test group. RESULTS There was insufficient evidence to suggest any statistically significant differences either between the two groups or, on average, across the five time points in each group in terms of the relative percentage of fluid filtration. CONCLUSION The DBA used did not seal dentinal tubules any more than did the smear layer and provisional crowns luted with a non-eugenol ZnO cement.

Abstract
Non-carious destruction of teeth has been observed in archaeological material from various parts of the world and clearly pre-dates the first appearance of dental caries. Attrition, abrasion and erosion are also described in the classic text of Pindborg on the pathology of the dental hard tissues. Whilst the dental profession, at least in affluent parts of the world, was engaged in diagnosing, treating and later preventing dental caries these other causes of tooth destruction were largely ignored.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to determine whether conventional black tea and a herbal tea were capable of eroding dental enamel. A further aim was to investigate whether herbal tea of the type tested eroded dental hard tissues to a greater or lesser extent than conventional black tea. METHODS Three groups of 21 teeth were exposed to a conventional black tea Typhoo (Group A), a herbal tea Twinings Blackcurrant, Ginsing and Vanilla (Group B) and water, which acted as a control (Group C). Sequential profilometric tracings of the specimens were taken, superimposed and the degree of enamel loss calculated as the area of disparity between the tracings before and after exposure. RESULTS Conventional black tea and herbal tea, of the type tested, both resulted in tooth surface loss. Tooth surface loss, which resulted from exposure to herbal tea (mean 0.05mm(2), s.d. 0.02), however, was significantly greater (P=0.00) than that which resulted from exposure to conventional black tea (mean 0.01mm(2), s.d. 0.00) and water (mean 0.00mm(2), s.d. 0.00). CONCLUSIONS It was concluded that herbal tea and conventional black tea of the type tested result in erosion of dental enamel. The erosive effect of the herbal tea of the type tested was five times more severe than that of the conventional black tea tested. The cumulative effects of regular consumption of herbal tea of the type tested are likely, therefore, to be of clinical significance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined the in vitro caries inhibiting potential of fluoridated and non-fluoridated rewetting agents that are applied to acid-etched enamel and dentine before the use of a water-free, dentine adhesive. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twelve caries-free premolars were divided into three groups of four teeth each. 2 x 3 x 1.5 mm cavities were prepared on the mesial and distal surfaces of each tooth, with half of the cavosurface margin in enamel and half in root dentine. In Group I (control), One-Step (Bisco, Schaumburg, USA) was applied without etching or rewetting agents. In Group II, cavities were acid-etched, rinsed, dried, and rewetted with Aqua-Prep (Bisco), a non-fluoridated rewetting agent, and then bonded with One-Step. Treatment for Group III was similar to Group II, except that Aqua-Prep F (Bisco), a fluoridated rewetting agent was used. Bonded cavities were restored with a non-fluoride-containing flowable composite (AEliteFlo, Bisco). Artificial carious lesions were induced in these specimens, from which multiple 100+/-20 microm thick longitudinal sections were prepared, yielding 16 specimens per group for evaluation with polarised light microscopy (PLM) and microradiography (MRG). Representative sections were processed for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examination and scanning transmission electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray (STEM/EDX) analyses. RESULTS The differences in demineralisation of dentine among the groups were not statistically significant for 'relative' lesion depth (p > 0.05, ANOVA, Student-Neuman-Keuls test), but highly significant for 'relative' lesion area (p < 0.001). Wall lesions were consistently present in Group I, while inhibition zones were invariably observed in Group III. 87.5% of Group II specimens exhibited neither wall lesion nor inhibition zone. TEM showed that remnant dentine apatite crystallites within the inhibition zones in Group III were larger and denser than those present within the corresponding wall lesions. STEM/EDX analyses confirmed the presence of calcium, phosphorus and fluorine in these plate-like crystallites. CONCLUSION When used with a water-free, single-bottle dentine adhesive, a non-fluoridated rewetting agent is able to reduce, but cannot completely prevent recurrent caries. The use of a fluoridated rewetting agent is useful under the situation when microleakage occurs, by providing the additional benefit of fluoride-induced demineralisation inhibition.
