Zhang-Zhang Polynomials of Multiple Zigzag Chains Revisited: A Connection with the John-Sachs Theorem

Multiple zigzag chains Zm,n of length n and width m constitute an important class of regular graphene flakes of rectangular shape. The physical and chemical properties of these basic pericondensed benzenoids can be related to their various topological invariants, conveniently encoded as the coefficients of a combinatorial polynomial, usually referred to as the ZZ polynomial of multiple zigzag chains Zm,n. The current study reports a novel method for determination of these ZZ polynomials based on a hypothesized extension to John–Sachs theorem, used previously to enumerate Kekulé structures of various benzenoid hydrocarbons. We show that the ZZ polynomial of the Zm,n multiple zigzag chain can be conveniently expressed as a determinant of a Toeplitz (or almost Toeplitz) matrix of size m2×m2 consisting of simple hypergeometric polynomials. The presented analysis can be extended to generalized multiple zigzag chains Zkm,n, i.e., derivatives of Zm,n with a single attached polyacene chain of length k. All presented formulas are accompanied by formal proofs. The developed theoretical machinery is applied for predicting aromaticity distribution patterns in large and infinite multiple zigzag chains Zm,n and for computing the distribution of spin densities in biradical states of finite multiple zigzag chains Zm,n.

Using Clar sextets for two- and three-dimensional aromatic systems

After a brief history of the aromaticity concept, the use of Clar sextet circles is reviewed for explaining various aspects of planar aromatic systems (benzenoids, heterocycles) and of tridimensional carbon aggregates. When folding a graphene sheet for obtaining nanotubes, nanotori, or nanocones, the congruence of Clar sextet circles allows the classification of all such aggregates into two classes (congruent or incongruent) with marked differences in properties; this is in agreement with the well-known condition h - k ≡ 0 (mod 3), equivalent to congruence, in terms of the chiral vectors h and k for graphene sheets.

Clar theory for molecular benzenoids

Eric Clar's ideas concerning "aromatic sextets" are extended to a quantitative format in terms of a polynomial called the "Clar 2-nomial", along with related derivative quantities. The quantification is successfully tested to make correlations with a selection of numerical data, including resonance energies, bond lengths, and NICS ring-aromaticity values.

Numerical Kekulé structures of fullerenes and partitioning of pi-electrons to pentagonal and hexagonal rings

We calculated the partitioning of pi-electrons within individual pentagonal and hexagonal rings of fullerenes for a collection of fullerenes from C20 to C72 by constructing their Kekulé valence structures and averaging the pi-electron content of individual rings over all Kekulé valence structures. The resulting information is collected in Table 2, which when combined with the Schlegel diagram of fullerenes (illustrated in Figure 7) uniquely characterizes each of the 19 fullerenes considered. The results are interpreted as the basic information on the distributions (variation) of the local (ring) pi-electron density.

Partitioning of π-Electrons in Rings for Clar Structures of Benzenoid Hydrocarbons

Resonance structures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can be associated with numerical formulas by assigning pi-electrons of C=C double bonds to individual benzenoid rings. Each C=C double bond in a resonance structure assigns two pi-electrons to a ring in a fused-benzenoid system if it is not shared by adjacent rings and one pi-electron when it is common to two rings, obtaining thus a "local" characterization of rings in polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons. In the present contribution we extend this approach to the aromatic pi-sextet model of Clar, which offers an alternative description of benzenoid hydrocarbons. In this model local characteristics of individual benzenoid rings are based on partitioning of pi-electrons but only for those resonance structures (fewer in number) that contribute to Clar's formula of benzenoid hydrocarbons.
