Reaction Mechanism of Li and Mg Carbenoid Cyclopropanations: Metal-π and σ Interactions

The mechanism of the reaction of lithium and magnesium carbenoids with ethylene to give cyclopropane has been explained in detail in all the steps at the G4 level of theory. We explored the lithium and magnesium interaction toward π_C=C and σ_C-C bonds in the reactants and the products. We have also investigated the reaction path by means of the force profile formalism in order to highlight the electronic and the structural rearrangements along the potential energy surface of the cyclopropanation. The results indicate that all of the reactions are stepwise, exoenergetic, with low barriers. All our findings were confirmed by dynamic simulations for chlorometal carbenoids. Furthermore, from the intrinsic reaction coordinate procedure, we were able to find out the intermediates that can take place when the reaction is descending from the transition state to the products or reactants. The reaction force analysis at B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) indicates that the energy barriers are mostly due to structural rearrangements which are produced by the approach of the carbenoid to ethylene. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules and electron localization function analyses indicate that products, reactants, and intermediates form complexes stabilized by attractive forces between Li/Mg and single/double bonds.

Global Reaction Route Mapping on Potential Energy Surfaces of Formaldehyde, Formic Acid, and Their Metal-Substituted Analogues

Global reaction route mapping of equilibrium structures, transition structures, and their connections on potential energy surface (PES) has been done for MCHO (M = H, Li, Na, Al, Cu) and HCO2M (M = H, Li). A one-after-another technique based on the scaled hypersphere search method has been successfully applied to exploring unknown chemical structures, transition structures, and reaction pathways for organometallic systems. Upon metal substitution, considerable changes of stable structures, reaction pathways, and relative heights of transition structures have been discovered, though some features are similar among the analogues. Al and Cu atoms were found to behave as very strong scissors to cut the CO double bond in MCHO. Energy profiles of the CO insertion into Li-H and Li-CH3 bonds were found to be very similar, especially around the structures where the Li atom is not directly connected with the methyl group, which indicates little effects of alkyl substitution on the reaction route topology.

Structure, Bonding, and Solvation of Lithium Vinylcarbenoids

[reaction: see text] Molecular modeling was used to determine the structure of lithium vinylcarbenoids in the gas phase and in THF solution. Solvent effects were modeled by microsolvation with explicit THF ligands on each of the lithium atoms. The carbenoid geometries are dependent on the heteroatom and on solvation. The calculations predict 1-chlorovinyllithium and 1-bromovinyllithium to be a mixture of monomer and dimer at 200 K and mostly monomer at higher temperatures, whereas the 1-fluoro-, 1-methoxy-, and 1-dimethylaminovinyllithium are predicted to be dimeric in solution.
