Liquid crystalline biopolymers: A new arena for liquid crystal Research

Liquid Crystal Behavior of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Dispersed in Biological Hyaluronic Acid Solutions

We report the spontaneous liquid crystal phase separation of nanotubes (single-walled carbon nanotubes, SWNTs) stabilized in aqueous biological (hyaluronic acid, HA) solutions. Sonication of SWNTs in solutions of HA produced well-dispersed single-phase isotropic dispersions which, over time, phase separated into dispersions containing birefringent nematic domains in equilibrium with an isotropic phase. The time required for phase separation to occur was shown to depend on the concentration of SWNT and HA, with the attractive interactions between the SWNT and HA shifting the onset of the phase separation toward lower concentration. This phase separation is accompanied by an increase in the dispersion viscosity with this increase qualitatively matching the degree of phase separation. The formation of ordered phases in biological media can offer wide opportunities for processing conducting biomaterials with aligned and oriented domains.

Emulsified microemulsions and oil-containing liquid crystalline phases

Self-assembled nanostructures, such as inverted type mesophases of the cubic or hexagonal geometry or reverse microemulsion phases, can be dispersed using a polymeric stabilizer, such as the PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymer Pluronic F127. The particles, which are described in the present study, are based on monolinolein (MLO)-water mixtures. When adding tetradecane (TC) to the MLO-water-F127 system at constant temperature, the internal nanostructure of the kinetically stabilized particles transforms from a Pn3m (cubosomes) to a H2 (hexosomes) and to a water-in-oil (W/O, L2) microemulsion phase (emulsified microemulsion (EME)). To our knowledge, this is the first time that the formation of stable emulsified microemulsion (EME) systems has been described and proven to exist even at room temperature. The same structural transitions can also be induced by increasing temperature at constant tetradecane content. The internal nanostructure of the emulsified particles is probed using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). At each investigated composition and temperature, the internal structure of the dispersions is observed to be identical to the corresponding structure of the nondispersed, fully hydrated bulk phase. This is clear evidence for the fact that the self-assembled inner particle nanostructure is preserved during the dispersion procedure. In addition, the internal structure of the particles is in thermodynamic equilibrium with the surrounding water phase. The internal structure of the dispersed, kinetically stabilized particles is a "real" and stable self-assembled nanostructure. To emphasize this fact, we denoted this new family of colloidal particles (cubosomes, hexosomes, and EMEs) as "ISASOMES" (internally self-assembled particles or "somes").

Entropy-induced microphase separation in hard diblock copolymers

Whereas entropy can induce phase behavior that is as rich as seen in energetic systems, microphase separation remains a very rare phenomenon in entropic systems. In this paper, we present a density functional approach to study the possibility of entropy-driven microphase separation in diblock copolymers. Our model system consists of copolymers composed of freely jointed slender hard rods. The two types of monomeric segments have comparable lengths, but a significantly different diameter, the latter difference providing the driving force for the phase separation. At the same time this system can also exhibit liquid crystalline phases. We treat this system in the appropriate generalization of the Onsager approximation to chain-like particles. Using a linear stability (bifurcation) analysis, we analytically determine the onset of the microseparated and the nematic phases for long chains. We find that for very long chains the microseparated phase always pre-empts the nematic. In the limit of infinitely long chains, the correlations within the chain become Gaussian and the approach becomes exact. This allows us to define a Gaussian limit in which the theory strongly simplifies and the competition between microphase separation and liquid crystal formation can be studied essentially analytically. Our main results are phase diagrams as a function of the remaining model parameters: i.e., the diameter ratio, the length ratio, and the number ratio of the two types of segments. We also determine the amplitude of the inhomogeneous order as a function of position along the chain at the onset of the microphase separation instability. Finally, we give suggestions as to how this type of entropy-induced microphase separation could be observed experimentally.
