Self-consistent molecular theory of orientational relaxation and dielectric friction in a dense dipolar liquid

Specific line shape of the lowest frequency Raman scattering modes of triethylene glycol

For both dielectric spectroscopy and light scattering spectra, the relaxation modes in the microwave region have been characterized by the Debye relaxation model, which is determined by the peak frequency, or by an empirically extended model (e.g., Cole-Davidson and Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts), which has the appropriate line shape. For light scattering from glass-forming liquids, the general line shape is a broader high frequency side in comparison with Debye relaxation. However, for triethylene glycol (TEG) in liquid form at room temperature, the lowest frequency Raman scattering (LFR) mode shows a peak at about 3.0 GHz, which is narrower than that expected for the Debye relaxation. With increasing temperature, this peak exhibits a significant blueshift and begins to resemble the Debye relaxation shape, indicating that the LFR mode of TEG is also a relaxation mode. The narrowing of the LFR mode of TEG is suggested to be caused from the increased non-whiteness of the fluctuation correlations due to increased hydrogen bonding. This is a consequence of breaking the Debye relaxation model's approximation of the overdamping and narrowing limits in the GHz region, which was found in this study by analyzing the relaxation modes of Raman scattering using the multiple random telegraph model for evaluating thermal bath correlation. The analysis results show that the LFR relaxation times of TEG and the main dielectric relaxation overlap only by 333 K. However, the second LFR mode and β-relaxation at higher frequencies coincide over a wide temperature range, suggesting that they are corresponding modes.

Rotational dynamics of polyatomic ions in aqueous solutions: From continuum model to mode-coupling theory, aided by computer simulations

Due to the presence of the rotational mode and the distributed surface charges, the dynamical behavior of polyatomic ions in water differs considerably from those of the monatomic ions. However, their fascinating dynamical properties have drawn scant attention. We carry out theoretical and computational studies of a series of well-known polyatomic ions, namely, sulfate, nitrate, and acetate ions. All three ions exhibit different rotational diffusivity, with that of the nitrate ion being considerably larger than the other two. They all defy the hydrodynamic laws of size dependence. Study of the local structure around the ions provides valuable insight into the origin of these differences. We carry out a detailed study of the rotational diffusion of these ions by extensive computer simulation and by using the theoretical approaches of the dielectric friction developed by Fatuzzo-Mason (FM) and Nee-Zwanzig (NZ), and subsequently generalized by Alavi and Waldeck. A critical element of the FM-NZ theory is the decomposition of the total rotational friction, ζ_Rot, into Stokes and dielectric parts. The study shows a dominant role of dielectric friction in the sense that if the ions are made neutral, the nature of diffusion changes and the values become much larger. Our analyses further reveal that the decomposition of total friction into the Stokes and dielectric friction breaks down for sulfate ions but remains semi-quantitatively valid for nitrate and acetate ions. We discuss the relationship between translational and rotational dielectric friction on rigid spherical ions. We develop a self-consistent mode-coupling theory (SC-MCT) formalism that could provide a unified view of rotational friction of polyatomic ions in polar medium. Our SC-MCT shows that the breakdown can be attributed to the change in the microscopic structural features. The mode-coupling theory helps in elucidating the role of coupling between translational and rotational motion of these ions. In fact, these two motions self-consistently determine the value of each other. The reference interaction site model-based MCT suggests an interesting relation between the torque-torque and the force-force time correlation function with the proportionality constant being determined by the geometry and the charge distribution of the polyatomic molecule. We point out several parallelisms between the theories of translational and rotation friction calculations of ions in polar liquids.

Glassy orientational dynamics of rodlike molecules near the isotropic-nematic transition

We investigate the single-particle orientational dynamics of rodlike molecules across the isotropic-nematic transition in computer simulations of a family of model systems of thermotropic liquid crystals. Several remarkable features of glassy dynamics are on display including nonexponential relaxation, dynamical heterogeneity, and non-Arrhenius temperature dependence of the orientational relaxation time. In order to obtain a quantitative measure of glassy dynamics in line with the established methods in supercooled liquids, we construct a relaxation time versus scaled inverse temperature plot and demonstrate that one can indeed define a "fragility index" for thermotropic liquid crystals that depends on density and aspect ratio. The values of the fragility parameter are surprisingly in the range observed for glass-forming liquids. A plausible correlation between the energy landscape features and the observed fragility is discussed.

Power law relaxation and glassy dynamics in Lebwohl-Lasher model near the isotropic-nematic phase transition

Orientational dynamics in a liquid crystalline system near the isotropic-nematic (IN) phase transition is studied using molecular dynamics simulations of the well-known Lebwohl-Lasher model. As the IN transition temperature is approached from the isotropic side, we find that the decay of the orientational time correlation functions (OTCF) slows down noticeably, giving rise to a power law decay at intermediate time scales. The angular velocity time correlation function also exhibits a rather pronounced power law decay near the IN boundary. In the mean squared angular displacement at comparable time scales, we observe the emergence of a subdiffusive regime which is followed by a superdiffusive regime before the onset of the long-time diffusive behavior. We observe signature of dynamical heterogeneity through pronounced non-Gaussian behavior in orientational motion particularly at lower temperatures. This behavior closely resembles what is usually observed in supercooled liquids. We obtain the free energy as a function of orientational order parameter by the use of the transition matrix Monte Carlo method. The free energy surface is flat for the system considered here and the barrier between isotropic and nematic phases is vanishingly small for this weakly first-order phase transition, hence allowing large scale, collective, and correlated orientational density fluctuations. This might be responsible for the observed power law decay of the OTCFs.

Complete breakdown of the Debye model of rotational relaxation near the isotropic-nematic phase boundary: effects of intermolecular correlations in orientational dynamics

The Debye-Stokes-Einstein (DSE) model of rotational diffusion predicts that the orientational correlation times tau l vary as [l(l+1)]-1, where l is the rank of the orientational time correlation function (given in terms of the Legendre polynomial of rank l). One often finds significant deviation from this prediction, in either direction. In supercooled molecular liquids where the ratio tau 1/tau 2 falls considerably below 3 (the Debye limit), one usually invokes a jump diffusion model to explain the approach of the ratio tau 1/tau 2 to unity. Here we show in a computer simulation study of a standard model system for thermotropic liquid crystals that this ratio becomes much less than unity as the isotropic-nematic phase boundary is approached from the isotropic side. Simultaneously, the ratio tau 2/eta, eta, being the shear viscosity of the liquid, becomes much larger than the hydrodynamic value near the I-N transition. We also analyze the breakdown of the Debye model of rotational diffusion in ratios of higher order orientational correlation times. We show that the breakdown of the DSE model is due to the growth of orientational pair correlation and provide a mode coupling theory analysis to explain the results.
