Fundamental aspects on the synthesis and characterisation of imprinted network polymers

Experimental investigation on strengthening of Zea mays root fibres for biodegradable composite materials using potassium permanganate treatment

Humans are the only species who generate waste materials that cannot be broken down by natural processes. The ideal solution to this waste problem would be to employ only compostable materials. Biodegradable materials play a key role in creating a safer and greener world. Biodegradability is the gift that keeps on giving, in the sense of creating an Earth worth living. The future is thus best served by green energy, sustainability, and renewable resources. To realize such goals, waste should be considered as a valuable resource. In this context, Zea mays (Zm) root fibres, which are normally considered as agricultural waste, can be used as reinforcing substances in polymer matrices to produce structural composite materials. Before being used in composites, such fibres must be analysed for their physical properties. Chemical treatments can be employed to improve the structural quality of fibres, and the changes due to such modification can be analysed. Therefore, the current work examines the effect of permanganate treatment on the surface properties of Zm fibres. The raw and potassium permanganate-treated samples were assayed for various properties. Physical analysis of the fibre samples yielded details concerning the physical aspects of the fibres. The thermal conductivity and moisture absorption behaviour of the samples were analysed. Chemical analysis was employed to characterize the composition of both treated and untreated samples. p-XRD was employed to examine the crystalline nature of the Zm fibres. Numerous functional groups present in each sample were analysed by FTIR. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to determine the thermal stability of Zm fibres. Elemental analysis (CHNS and EDS) was used to determine the elemental concentrations of both raw and treated samples. The surface alterations of Zm fibres brought on by treatment were described using SEM analysis. The characteristics of Zm roots and the changes in quality due to treatment were reviewed, and there were noticeable effects due to the treatment. Both samples would have applications in various fields, and each could be used as a potential reinforcing material in the production of efficient bio-composites.

KI and TEDA influences towards the retention of radiotoxic CH3I by activated carbons

Activated carbons (AC) are widely used within the ventilation networks of nuclear facilities to trap volatile iodine species. In this paper, the performances of various commercial activated carbons towards the trapping of γ-labelled methyl iodide were evaluated in semi-pilot scale under different R.H. according to normalized procedures. A combination between the retention performances and the physico-chemical properties as deduced from several techniques was performed to gain insights about the AC influencing parameters on γ-CH₃I capture. Different trends were obtained depending on the impregnant nature and the studied conditions. A high sensitivity of KI/AC towards water vapor was outlined. At R.H. = 40%. The enhancement of water uptake by KI/AC as deduced from water adsorption experiments, leads to decrease the available microporosity for CH₃I physisorption, inducing therefore the reduction of performances as a function of KI content at these conditions. At R.H. = 90%, the adsorption mechanism was found to be governed by isotopic exchange reaction since 90% of the microporosity was occupied by water molecules. Therefore, a slight increase of DF was obtained in these conditions. This sensitivity was found to be of a lesser extent for TEDA/AC displaying the highest retention performances whatever the studied condition.

Thiourea‐ and Amino‐Substituted Benzoxadiazole Dyes with Large Stokes Shifts as Red‐Emitting Probe Monomers for Imprinted Polymer Layers Targeting Carboxylate‐Containing Antibiotics

Bifunctional fluorescent molecular oxoanion probes based on the benzoxadiazole (BD) chromophore are described which integrate a thiourea binding motif and a polymerizable 2‐aminoethyl methacrylate unit in the 4,7‐positions of the BD core. Concerted charge transfer in this electron donor‐acceptor‐donor architecture endows the dyes with strongly Stokes shifted (up to >250 nm) absorption and fluorescence. Binding of electron‐rich carboxylate guests at the thiourea receptor leads to further analyte‐induced red‐shifts of the emission, shifting the fluorescence maximum of the complexes to ≥700 nm. Association constants for acetate are ranging from 1–5×10⁵ M⁻¹ in acetonitrile. Integration of one of the fluorescent probes through its polymerizable moiety into molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) grafted from the surface of submicron silica cores yielded fluorescent MIP‐coated particle probes for the selective detection of antibiotics containing aliphatic carboxylate groups such as enoxacin (ENOX) at micromolar concentrations in highly polar solvents like acetonitrile.

Synthesis of imprinted hydrogel microbeads by inverse Pickering emulsion to controlled release of adenosine 5'‑monophosphate

Herein, we propose the synthesis of a microspherical imprinted hydrogel meant for the controlled release of a nucleotide, adenosine 5'-monophosphate (5'-AMP). Indeed, molecularly imprinted polymers-based (MIPs) materials possess remarkable selective molecular recognition ability that mimicks biological systems. MIPs have been used in numerous applications and hold great promise for the vectorization and/or controlled release of therapeutics and cosmetics. But, the conception of imprinted hydrogels-based drug delivery systems that are able to release polar bioactive compounds is explored weakly. Herein, the synthesis of imprinted hydrogel microbeads by inverse Pickering emulsion is detailed. Microspheres showed a large 5'-AMP loading capacity, around 300 mg·g^-1, and a high binding capacity comparatively to the non-imprinted counterpart. The MIP had a thermo-responsive release behavior providing sustained release of adenosine 5'-monophosphate in an aqueous buffer simulating both human skin pH and temperature.

Solid-Phase Synthesis of Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Nanoparticles with a Reusable Template - "Plastic Antibodies"

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) are generic alternatives to antibodies in sensors, diagnostics and separations. To displace biomolecules without radical changes in infrastructure in device manufacture, MIPs should share their characteristics (solubility, size, specificity and affinity, localized binding domain) whilst maintaining the advantages of MIPs (low-cost, short development time and high stability) hence the interest in MIP nanoparticles. Herein we report a reusable solid-phase template approach (fully compatible with automation) for the synthesis of MIP nanoparticles and their precise manufacture using a prototype automated UV photochemical reactor. Batches of nanoparticles (30-400 nm) with narrow size distributions imprinted with: melamine (d = 60 nm, Kd = 6.3 × 10-8 m), vancomycin (d = 250 nm, Kd = 3.4 × 10-9 m), a peptide (d = 350 nm, Kd = 4.8 × 10-8 m) and proteins have been produced. Our instrument uses a column packed with glass beads, bearing the template. Process parameters are under computer control, requiring minimal manual intervention. For the first time we demonstrate the reliable re-use of molecular templates in the synthesis of MIPs (≥ 30 batches of nanoMIPs without loss of performance). NanoMIPs are produced template-free and the solid-phase acts both as template and affinity separation medium.

Studies on the Process of Formation, Nature and Stability of Binding Sites in Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

In Molecular Imprinting the nature of the templated binding sites and the mechanism of their formation are still poorly understood. For this reason our groups are carrying out fundamental studies concerning known imprinting protocols, with the primary aim of shedding light on the role of the template in the different steps of the polymerisation, from the formation of primary chains to the build-up of the porous structure. In this paper we report our initial results concerning copolymers of methacrylic acid (MAA) and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) and their formation in presence or absence of the templates 9-ethyladenine, ametryn or terbutylazine. Monitoring the monomer disappearance by 1H-NMR showed that the presence of templates such as 9-ethyladenine significantly retarded the polymerisation but otherwise had minor influence on the relative reactivity of the monomers. The latter appeared in most cases to be stoichiometrically incorporated into the polymer. The signals arising from the template experienced little or no shift in the early stage of the polymerisation, although pronounced broadening was observed. By delaying the addition of the template, it was observed that binding sites with high selectivity could be induced more than one hour after the gel point of the system had been passed. Finally, the results of post-polymerisation curing on the dry and swollen state porosities and the recognition properties of terbutylazine imprinted polymers are reported. This treatment when performed at temperatures between 100-120°C, slightly enhanced the selectivity of the polymers, whereas at higher temperatures the polymers lost their molecular recognition properties. Swollen state porosity derived from inverse size exclusion chromatography (ISEC) revealed an interesting sharpening of the pore size distribution for the imprinted compared to the non-imprinted polymers.

Molecular imprinting science and technology: a survey of the literature for the years up to and including 2003

Over 1450 references to original papers, reviews and monographs have herein been collected to document the development of molecular imprinting science and technology from the serendipitous discovery of Polyakov in 1931 to recent attempts to implement and understand the principles underlying the technique and its use in a range of application areas. In the presentation of the assembled references, a section presenting reviews and monographs covering the area is followed by papers dealing with fundamental aspects of molecular imprinting and the development of novel polymer formats. Thereafter, literature describing attempts to apply these polymeric materials to a range of application areas is presented.

Affinity parameters of amino acid derivative binding to molecularly imprinted nanospheres consisting of poly[(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)-co-(methacrylic acid)]

The binding of L-Boc-phenylalanine anilide (BFA) and L-Boc-phenylalanine (phe) to molecularly imprinted and non-imprinted polymer nanoparticles consisting of poly[(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)-co-(methacrylic acid)] has been investigated by adsorption experiments and mathematical modeling. The experimental isotherms have been mathematically adapted following the models of Freundlich, Langmuir, Langmuir-Freundlich, Bi-Langmuir, and extended Langmuir. The extended Langmuir model differentiated between specific and nonspecific binding of the ligand to the receptor nanoparticles and rendered excellent fitting of the experimental data. It delivered a thermodynamic and kinetic parameter set on the experimental association curves of L-BFA by L-BFA-imprinted nanospheres in suspension experiments with the equilibrium constant KD= 4.09 +/- 0.69 micromol L(-1) and the kinetic association rate constant Ka= 5.60 mL micromol(-1) min(-1).

Membrane separations using molecularly imprinted polymers

This review presents an overview on the promising field of molecularly imprinted membranes (MIM). The focus is onto the separation of molecules in liquid mixtures via membrane transport selectivity. First, the status of synthetic membranes and membrane separation technology is briefly summarized, emphasizing the need for novel membranes with higher selectivities. Innovative principles for the preparation of membranes with improved or novel functionality include self-assembly or supramolecular aggregation as well as the use of templates. Based on a detailed analysis of the literature, the main established preparation methods for MIM are outlined: simultaneous membrane formation and imprinting, or preparation of imprinted composite membranes. Then, the separation capability of MIM is discussed for two different types, as a function of their barrier structure. Microporous MIM can continuously separate mixtures based on facilitated diffusion of the template, or they can change their permeability in the presence of the template ("gate effect"). Macroporous MIM can be developed towards molecule-specific membrane adsorbers. Emerging further combinations of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), especially MIP nanoparticles or microgels, with membranes and membrane processes are briefly outlined as well. Finally, the application potential for advanced MIM separation technologies is summarized.
