Influence of food thickness and hardness on possible feed-forward control of the masseteric muscle activity in the anesthetized rabbit

Got rhythm? Rhythmicity differences reflect different optimality criteria in feeding and locomotor systems

Evolutionary analyses of joint kinematics and muscle mechanics suggest that, during cyclic behaviors, tetrapod feeding systems are optimized for precise application of forces over small displacements during chewing, whereas locomotor systems are more optimized for large and rapid joint excursions during walking and running. If this hypothesis is correct, then it stands to reason that other biomechanical variables in the feeding and locomotor systems should also reflect these divergent functions. We compared rhythmicity of cyclic jaw and limb movements in feeding and locomotor systems in 261 tetrapod species in a phylogenetic context. Accounting for potential confounding variables, our analyses reveal higher rhythmicity of cyclic movements of the limbs than of the jaw. Higher rhythmicity in the locomotor system corroborates a hypothesis of stronger optimization for energetic efficiency: deviation from the limbs' natural frequency results in greater variability of center of mass movements and limb inertial changes, and therefore more work by limb muscles. Relatively lower rhythmicity in the feeding system may be a consequence of the necessity to prevent tooth breakage and wear, the greater complexity of coordination with tongue movements, and/or a greater emphasis on energy storage in elastic elements rather than the kinetics of limb movement.

Changes of bolus properties and the triggering of swallowing in healthy humans

There is wide variation in chewing behaviours, even among healthy humans. Further, the way in which humans determine swallowing initiation when chewing solid foods remains unclear. The current study sought to investigate how the bolus properties change over time during chewing, and to clarify which factors affect chewing and swallowing behaviours, including swallowing initiation, in healthy humans. Twenty-four healthy volunteers were instructed to chew 8 g of steamed rice and spit it out at 50%, 100% and 150% of their own chewing duration, defined as the time of chewing from onset of the first chewing cycle to onset of the first swallow. Chewing and swallowing behaviours were monitored and determined by visual inspection of video recordings. The physical properties such as hardness, cohesiveness and adhesiveness as well as water content of the bolus were measured. In each subject, maximum bite force, tongue pressure and stimulated salivary flow rate were also measured. Hardness gradually decreased, and the cohesiveness and water content of the bolus did not change up to 50% of chewing duration, followed by a slight but significant increase. The adhesiveness of the bolus rapidly decreased at the beginning of chewing. Chewing duration was significantly related to stimulated salivary flow rate; greater salivary flow rate was associated with shorter chewing duration. Variation of chewing duration and swallowing initiation was not dependent on bolus properties during the chewing of steamed rice, but mainly depended on the surface lubrication of the bolus.

Temporal change in the occlusal vertical dimension and its involvement in modulation of jaw movement in bite-reduced animals

The occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) in guinea pigs is maintained by tooth eruption and grinding. It has been reported that the experimentally raised OVD recovers to the innate OVD within a few days in guinea pigs. However, the mechanisms underlying OVD adjustment are not entirely understood. This study thus aimed to clarify whether the experimentally reduced OVD would recover. Bite-reduced guinea pigs were created by applying bilateral intermaxillary elastics for 10 days. Guinea pigs without elastics were used as a control. The OVD after removal of the elastics in the experimental group was compared with that of the control group. Jaw movement during chewing was also compared between the experimental and control groups. After removal of the elastics, the experimentally reduced OVD did not recover fully and a significant difference was observed between the experimental and control groups for up to 25 days during the recording period. The minimum closed position during chewing was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group, whereas the maximum open position was no different between the groups. The present findings indicated that the experimentally reduced OVD could not be fully recovered, suggesting that reduction of the OVD may have limited influence on jaw movement.

Excitatory drive of masseter muscle during mastication with dental implants

Previously we have reported a biphasic increase in excitatory drive of the masseter muscle during natural chewing in young adults. We now hypothesize that sensory inputs from the periodontal mechanoreceptors (PMRs) are responsible for the late increase in excitatory drive during this biphasic movement. 13 participants with implant-supported bridges in both jaws, and thus lacking PMRs, and 13 participants with natural dentition chewed and swallowed model food of different hardness. Electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masseter muscle was recorded, along with the position of the mandible, and the muscle activity and jaw kinematics during the different phases of the chewing cycle were analyzed. Throughout the entire masticatory sequence, the excitatory drive of the masseter muscle during the jaw closing increased in a biphasic manner for the dentate participants; whereas biphasic elevation was observed only during the middle and last segments in the implant participants. Dentate participants exhibited significantly greater boosting of the EMG activity during late jaw closing than the implant participants, irrespective of food hardness and segment of the masticatory sequence. Sensory information from PMRs are required for boosting the enhancement of masseter muscle activity during the late jaw closing, during tooth-food contact.

Masticatory biomechanics in the rabbit: a multi-body dynamics analysis

Multi-body dynamics is a powerful engineering tool which is becoming increasingly popular for the simulation and analysis of skull biomechanics. This paper presents the first application of multi-body dynamics to analyse the biomechanics of the rabbit skull. A model has been constructed through the combination of manual dissection and three-dimensional imaging techniques (magnetic resonance imaging and micro-computed tomography). Individual muscles are represented with multiple layers, thus more accurately modelling muscle fibres with complex lines of action. Model validity was sought through comparing experimentally measured maximum incisor bite forces with those predicted by the model. Simulations of molar biting highlighted the ability of the masticatory system to alter recruitment of two muscle groups, in order to generate shearing or crushing movements. Molar shearing is capable of processing a food bolus in all three orthogonal directions, whereas molar crushing and incisor biting are predominately directed vertically. Simulations also show that the masticatory system is adapted to process foods through several cycles with low muscle activations, presumably in order to prevent rapidly fatiguing fast fibres during repeated chewing cycles. Our study demonstrates the usefulness of a validated multi-body dynamics model for investigating feeding biomechanics in the rabbit, and shows the potential for complementing and eventually reducing in vivo experiments.

Influence of balancing-side occlusal interference on smoothness of working-side condylar movement and intra-articular space in chewing efforts

Response of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) articulation adapting to occlusal alteration has been sparsely known. For 10 healthy adults with acceptably good occlusion, an artificial occlusal interference (OI) was introduced to the lower molar on the balancing side of unilateral chewing. Subjects were asked to chew a gum on their preferred side. The chewing jaw movements with/without the OI were recorded using a video-based optoelectronic system. The mandibular movements were generated in each individual's TMJ model reconstructed by magnetic resonance images. The smoothness of local condylar point movements towards the normal direction of the condylar surface and interarticular space on the working side was measured. Overall, the smoothness of condylar point movements in the closing phase was impaired immediately after introduction of the OI. In the intercuspal phase, the OI increased the joint space. After about 60 chewing cycles, the movement smoothness and joint space began to recover. These findings suggest that OI on the balancing side induced irregular stress field translation on the working-side condylar surface followed by acute recovery process.

New directions for understanding neural control in swallowing: the potential and promise of motor learning

Oropharyngeal swallowing is a complex sensorimotor phenomenon that has had decades of research dedicated to understanding it more thoroughly. However, the underlying neural mechanisms responsible for normal and disordered swallowing remain very vague. We consider this gap in knowledge the result of swallowing research that has been broad (identifying phenomena) but not deep (identifying what controls the phenomena). The goals of this review are to address the complexity of motor control of oropharyngeal swallowing and to review the principles of motor learning based on limb movements as a model system. We compare this literature on limb motor learning to what is known about oropharyngeal function as a first step toward suggesting the use of motor learning principles in swallowing research.

The mechanical function of the periodontal ligament in the macaque mandible: a validation and sensitivity study using finite element analysis

Whilst the periodontal ligament (PDL) acts as an attachment tissue between bone and tooth, hypotheses regarding the role of the PDL as a hydrodynamic damping mechanism during intraoral food processing have highlighted its potential importance in finite element (FE) analysis. Although experimental and constitutive models have correlated the mechanical function of the PDL tissue with its anisotropic, heterogeneous, viscoelastic and non-linear elastic nature, in many FE simulations the PDL is either present or absent, and when present is variably modelled. In addition, the small space the PDL occupies and the inability to visualize the PDL tissue using μCT scans poses issues during FE model construction and so protocols for the PDL thickness also vary. In this paper we initially test and validate the sensitivity of an FE model of a macaque mandible to variations in the Young's modulus and the thickness of the PDL tissue. We then tested the validity of the FE models by carrying out experimental strain measurements on the same mandible in the laboratory using laser speckle interferometry. These strain measurements matched the FE predictions very closely, providing confidence that material properties and PDL thickness were suitably defined. The FE strain results across the mandible are generally insensitive to the absence and variably modelled PDL tissue. Differences are only found in the alveolar region adjacent to the socket of the loaded tooth. The results indicate that the effect of the PDL on strain distribution and/or absorption is restricted locally to the alveolar bone surrounding the teeth and does not affect other regions of the mandible.

The trigeminal circuits responsible for chewing

Mastication is a vital function that ensures that ingested food is broken down into pieces and prepared for digestion. This review outlines the masticatory behavior in terms of the muscle activation patterns and jaw movements and gives an overview of the organization and function of the trigeminal neuronal circuits that are known to take part in the generation and control of oro-facial motor functions. The basic pattern of rhythmic jaw movements produced during mastication is generated by a Central Pattern Generator (CPG) located in the pons and medulla. Neurons within the CPG have intrinsic properties that produce a rhythmic activity, but the output of these neurons is modified by inputs that descend from the higher centers of the brain, and by feedback from sensory receptors, in order to constantly adapt the movement to the food properties.

Chewing variation in lepidosaurs and primates

Mammals chew more rhythmically than lepidosaurs. The research presented here evaluated possible reasons for this difference in relation to differences between lepidosaurs and mammals in sensorimotor systems. Variance in the absolute and relative durations of the phases of the gape cycle was calculated from kinematic data from four species of primates and eight species of lepidosaurs. The primates exhibit less variance in the duration of the gape cycle than in the durations of the four phases making up the gape cycle. This suggests that increases in the durations of some gape cycle phases are accompanied by decreases in others. Similar effects are much less pronounced in the lepidosaurs. In addition, the primates show isometric changes in gape cycle phase durations, i.e. the relative durations of the phases of the gape cycle change little with increasing cycle time. In contrast, in the lepidosaurs variance in total gape cycle duration is associated with increases in the proportion of the cycle made up by the slow open phase. We hypothesize that in mammals the central nervous system includes a representation of the optimal chew cycle duration maintained using afferent feedback about the ongoing state of the chew cycle. The differences between lepidosaurs and primates do not lie in the nature of the sensory information collected and its feedback to the feeding system, but rather the processing of that information by the CNS and its use feed-forward for modulating jaw movements and gape cycle phase durations during chewing.

Interactive relationship between the mechanical properties of food and the human response during the first bite

Biting is an action that results from interplay between food properties and the masticatory system. The mechanical factors of food that cause biting adaptation and the recursive effects of modified biting on the mechanical phenomena of food are largely unknown. We examined the complex interaction between the bite system and the mechanical properties. Nine subjects were each given a cheese sample and instructed to bite it once with their molar teeth. An intra-oral bite force-time profile was measured using a tactile pressure-measurement system with a sheet sensor inserted between the molars. Time, force, and impulse for the first peak were specified as intra-oral parameters of the sample fracture. Mechanical properties of the samples were also examined using a universal testing machine at various test speeds. Besides fracture parameters, initial slope was also determined as a mechanical property possibly sensed shortly after bite onset. The bite profile was then examined based on the mechanical parameters. Sample-specific bite velocities were identified as characteristic responses of a human bite. A negative correlation was found between bite velocity and initial slope of the sample, suggesting that the initial slope is the mechanical factor that modifies the consequent bite velocity. The sample-specific bite velocity had recursive effects on the following fracture event, such that a slow velocity induced a low bite force and high impulse for the intra-oral fracture event. We demonstrated that examination of the physiological and mechanical factors during the first bite can provide valuable information about the food-oral interaction.

Reliability and sensitivity of jerk-cost measurement for evaluating irregularity of chewing jaw movements

Rate of change in movement acceleration (jerk) is a universally accepted quantity to evaluate irregularities of human limb and eye movements. This study was aimed to attest reliability of the jerk measurement of masticatory jaw movements and to identify its sensitivity to discriminate between movements performed with the presence of varied occlusal interference. Jaw movements during gum chewing were recorded with a 3D tracking device. Twelve adult subjects participated in the experiments. For five subjects, normalized jerk-costs (NJC) during jaw closing were compared between those measured on two separate occasions. For seven subjects, the NJCs during closing were compared with those measured with/without introduction of four different types of occlusal interference. The NJCs did not differ significantly between the two recording occasions. The interference at the canine tooth induced greater increase in the NJCs than that at the molar tooth. The comparison between repeated measures revealed reproducibility of the NJCs. In addition, the NJC was shown to be capable of discriminating between irregularities of the movements induced by occlusal interference at the canine and molar tooth sites. These findings suggest that the NJC is a valid indicator of masticatory jaw movement irregularity induced by disturbances of full intercuspation between upper and lower teeth.

Neurobiological mechanisms involved in sleep bruxism

Sleep bruxism (SB) is reported by 8% of the adult population and is mainly associated with rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) characterized by repetitive jaw muscle contractions (3 bursts or more at a frequency of 1 Hz). The consequences of SB may include tooth destruction, jaw pain, headaches, or the limitation of mandibular movement, as well as tooth-grinding sounds that disrupt the sleep of bed partners. SB is probably an extreme manifestation of a masticatory muscle activity occurring during the sleep of most normal subjects, since RMMA is observed in 60% of normal sleepers in the absence of grinding sounds. The pathophysiology of SB is becoming clearer, and there is an abundance of evidence outlining the neurophysiology and neurochemistry of rhythmic jaw movements (RJM) in relation to chewing, swallowing, and breathing. The sleep literature provides much evidence describing the mechanisms involved in the reduction of muscle tone, from sleep onset to the atonia that characterizes rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Several brainstem structures (e.g., reticular pontis oralis, pontis caudalis, parvocellularis) and neurochemicals (e.g., serotonin, dopamine, gamma aminobutyric acid [GABA], noradrenaline) are involved in both the genesis of RJM and the modulation of muscle tone during sleep. It remains unknown why a high percentage of normal subjects present RMMA during sleep and why this activity is three times more frequent and higher in amplitude in SB patients. It is also unclear why RMMA during sleep is characterized by co-activation of both jaw-opening and jaw-closing muscles instead of the alternating jaw-opening and jaw-closing muscle activity pattern typical of chewing. The final section of this review proposes that RMMA during sleep has a role in lubricating the upper alimentary tract and increasing airway patency. The review concludes with an outline of questions for future research.

Putative feed-forward control of jaw-closing muscle activity during rhythmic jaw movements in the anesthetized rabbit

When a thin plastic test strip of various hardness is placed between the upper and lower teeth during rhythmical jaw movements induced by electrical stimulation of the cortical masticatory area (CMA) in anesthetized rabbits, electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masseter muscle is facilitated in a hardness-dependent manner. This facilitatory masseteric response (FMR) often occurred prior to contact of the teeth to the strip, and thus preceded the onset of the masticatory force. Since this finding suggests involvement of a feed-forward mechanism in the induction of the FMR, the temporal relationship between the onset of the FMR and that of the masticatory force was analyzed in five sequential masticatory cycles after application of the strip. The FMR was found to precede the onset of masticatory force from the second masticatory cycle after application of the strip, but never did in the first cycle. This finding supports the concept of a feed-forward control mechanism that modulates FMR timing. Furthermore, the FMR preceding the force onset disappeared after making a lesion of the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MesV) where the ganglion cells of the muscle spindle afferents from the jaw-closing muscles are located. In contrast, no such change occurred after blocking periodontal afferents by transection of both the maxillary and the inferior alveolar nerves. The putative feed-forward control of the FMR is therefore dependent mainly on sensory inputs from the muscle spindles, but little on those from the periodontal receptors, if any. We further examined the involvement of the CMA with the putative feed-forward control of the FMR via the transcortical loop. For this purpose, rhythmical jaw movements were induced by stimulation of the pyramidal tract. No significant change in the timing of the FMR occurred after the CMA ablation, which strongly suggests that the CMA is not involved in the putative feed-forward control of the FMR. The FMR was also noted to increase significantly in a hardness-dependent manner even after the MesV lesion, although the rate of increment decreased significantly. Contribution of muscle spindles and periodontal receptors to the hardness-dependent change of the FMR is discussed.
