Top-down formation of fullerenes in the interstellar medium

Fullerenes have been recently detected in various circumstellar and interstellar environments, raising the question of their formation pathway. It has been proposed that they can form at the low densities found in the interstellar medium by the photo-chemical processing of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Following our previous work on the evolution of PAHs in the NGC 7023 reflection nebula, we evaluate, using photochemical modeling, the possibility that the PAH C66H20 (i.e. circumovalene) can lead to the formation of C60 upon irradiation by ultraviolet photons. The chemical pathway involves full dehydrogenation of C66H20, folding into a floppy closed cage and shrinking of the cage by loss of C2 units until it reaches the symmetric C60 molecule. At 10" from the illuminating star and with realistic molecular parameters, the model predicts that 100% of C66H20 is converted into C60 in ~ 105 years, a timescale comparable to the age of the nebula. Shrinking appears to be the kinetically limiting step of the whole process. Hence, PAHs larger than C66H20 are unlikely to contribute significantly to the formation of C60, while PAHs containing between 60 and 66 C atoms should contribute to the formation of C60 with shorter timescales, and PAHs containing less than 60 C atoms will be destroyed. Assuming a classical size distribution for the PAH precursors, our model predicts absolute abundances of C60 are up to several 10-4 of the elemental carbon, i.e. less than a percent of the typical interstellar PAH abundance, which is consistent with observational studies. According to our model, once formed, C60 can survive much longer (> 107 years for radiation fields below G0 = 104) than other fullerenes because of the remarkable stability of the C60 molecule at high internal energies. Hence, a natural consequence is that C60 is more abundant than other fullerenes in highly irradiated environments.

High-resolution kinetic energy release distributions and dissociation energies for fullerene ions Cn+, 42 < or = n < or = 90

We have measured the kinetic energy released in the unimolecular dissociation of fullerene ions, Cn+ --> C(n-2)+ + C2, for sizes 42 < or = n < or = 90. A three-sector-field mass spectrometer equipped with two electric sectors has been used in order to ensure that contributions from isotopomers of different masses do not distort the experimental kinetic energy release distributions. We apply the concept of microcanonical temperature to derive from these data the dissociation energies of fullerene cations. They are converted to dissociation energies of neutral fullerenes with help of published adiabatic ionization energies. The results are compared with literature values.

Kinetic energy release distributions in mass spectrometry

Kinetic energy releases (KERs) in unimolecular fragmentations of singly and multiply charged ions provide information concerning ion structures, reaction energetics and dynamics. This topic is reviewed covering both early and more recent developments. Development of a three-dimensional topographic map display for capillary electrophoresis/mass spectrometry with an ion trap/reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer detector: applications to tryptic digests of isoforms of myelin basic protein

A three-dimensional (3-D) contour map format has been developed to display the large amount of data continuously collected throughout an on-line capillary separation using an ion trap storage/reflectron time-of-flight detector (IT/reTOF). The resulting data are displayed on a single computer screen with a mass-to-charge ratio value-elution time-intensity representation. The intensity of various components is represented by 16 different colors so that the mass-to-charge ratio value, the elution time, and the intensity can be conveniently determined for each component. In addition, the mass spectrum and total ion chromatogram or total ion electropherogram (TIE) are shown on the same screen as the 3-D map that enables the correlation of a single spot in the 3-D map to the peaks in the TIE and the corresponding mass spectrum. The 3-D map has been used to identify various posttranslational modification sites of bovine myelin basic protein charge isomers, where the datafiles of tryptic digests of proteins analyzed by capillary electrophoresis/mass spectrometry were processed by this software and a comparison could be performed among the isoforms. The feature of in-screen integration over both the separation domain and the mass domain makes the acquisition of the selected ion chromatogram very convenient and greatly improves the ability to detect modified components present in low amounts.
