Neonatal Dermatology: The Normal, the Common, and the Serious

The objective of this review is to help practitioners of neonatal and pediatric medicine become more familiar with diagnosing and managing neonatal skin conditions. This article will discuss normal neonatal skin care and benign and common rashes, as well as some of the serious dermatologic conditions that require specialists for further evaluation and/or treatment.

Bilateral acromial dimples: a case report and review of the literature

Bilateral acromial dimples are uncommon in pediatric dermatology. They are usually found as a sporadic finding with limited clinical symptoms but may cause concern for parents. They can occur spontaneously or be inherited. Bilateral acromial dimples may occasionally be present as part of more complex syndromes. This article reports an 18-month-old girl with congenital bilateral acromial dimples and presents a classification of this unusual entity. A literature review of English and non-English publications was performed. We report the second case of bilateral acromial dimples seen in the context of maternal cocaine use during pregnancy. Our case is probably sporadic and nonsyndromal. We suggest that bilateral acromial dimples be classified as syndromal or nonsyndromal and that nonsyndromal cases be subdivided into inherited and sporadic. Although bilateral acromial dimples can be seen in 18q deletion syndrome, Apert syndrome, Say syndrome, and a recently described syndrome in Brazil, our review of the literature does not support the association with trisomy 9 syndrome. Dermatologists need to be aware of this unusual cutaneous finding and potential syndromal associations. The significance of the association with fetal exposure to cocaine during pregnancy has yet to be determined. The biological mother was not available for assessment for bilateral acromial dimples.

Bi-acromial dimples: a series of seven cases

Seven patients with bi-acromial dimples are reported, with a family history in only one. This skin condition presented as an anatomic peculiarity without associated abnormalities. Although it has been previously documented as a finding in malformation syndromes such as the 18q syndrome, we point out that it may be found quite frequently in isolation and without morbidity. Therefore, it should be mainly considered as an anatomic variation without pathologic significance.

Bilateral skin dimples on the shoulders

Cutaneous depressions, commonly known as dimples, are uncommon in locations other than the face. An infant had deep dimple-like depressions near the acromion bilaterally. This most likely represents benign autosomal acromial dimples, a rarely reported autosomal dominant condition. Other causes of dimples include a variety of congenital malformation syndromes, and infectious, metabolic, and traumatic etiologies. Awareness of the etiology and significance of skin dimples is helpful to the clinician when confronted with this unusual finding.
