Abstract
Rowell Syndrome, first described in 1963 by Rowell et al., is an infrequently reported and unique syndrome occurring in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). This syndrome characteristically presents with erythema multiforme-like lesions as well as other specific immunologic and histopathologic manifestations. Since Rowell's original description, diagnostic criteria have been proposed and modified to better describe the syndrome. We describe a 32-year-old African American female patient with a previous history of SLE who presented with dermatologic, immunologic, and histopathologic manifestations that fit the modified diagnostic criteria for Rowell Syndrome.

Abstract
Immune checkpoint receptors with co-stimulatory and co-inhibitory signals are important modulators for the immune system. However, unrestricted co-stimulation and/or inadequate co-inhibition may cause breakdown of self-tolerance, leading to autoimmunity. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex multi-organ disease with skewed and dysregulated immune responses interacting with genetics and the environment. The close connections between co-signaling pathways and SLE have gradually been established in past research. Also, the recent success of immune checkpoint blockade in cancer therapy illustrates the importance of the co-inhibitory receptors in cancer immunotherapy. Moreover, immune checkpoint blockade could result in substantial immune-related adverse events that mimic autoimmune diseases, including lupus. Together, immune checkpoint regulators represent viable immunotherapeutic targets for the treatment of both autoimmunity and cancer. Therefore, it appears reasonable to treat SLE by restoring the out-of-order co-signaling axis or by manipulating collateral pathways to control the pathogenic immune responses. Here, we review the current state of knowledge regarding the relationships between SLE and the co-signaling pathways of T cells, B cells, dendritic cells, and neutrophils, and highlight their potential clinical implications. Current clinical trials targeting the specific co-signaling axes involved in SLE help to advance such knowledge, but further in-depth exploration is still warranted.

Abstract
To date, 71 patients having the so-called 'Rowell's syndrome' (RS) have been reported in the literature. However, most of them did not show all the clinical and serological features first described by Rowell and co-workers in 1963. Moreover, since then, subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) has been identified and the diagnostic criteria as well as the clinical features of erythema multiforme (EM) defined. Accordingly several authors have questioned the existence of RS over the past years. In the present paper, the main clinical, histopathological and immunopathological features of both SCLE and EM are described and all of the cases of RS reported in the literature are also reviewed in depth. A real association between discoid LE and EM was present only in a minority of cases and could be considered a mere coincidence. As for other associations, e.g. those between CLE and lichen planus or psoriasis, the coexistence of CLE and EM does not justify the framing of a separate syndrome as suggested by Rowell et al.

Abstract
We report a 9-year follow-up of a girl with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and probable Sjögren's syndrome. At the age of 7 years, the patient developed a chilblain-like eruption with features of SLE, including leucopenia, oral ulcers, positive rheumatoid and antinuclear antibodies and positive anti-dsDNA, anti-Ro/SSA and anti-La/SSB antibodies. At the age of 13 years she developed Guillain-Barré syndrome, which completely resolved with aggressive treatment, including high-dose corticosteroids and the use of plasma exchange followed by intravenous gammaglobulin.

Abstract
The occurrence of erythema multiforme (EM) in patients with lupus erythematosus (LE) has been described previously as a coincidental association. In contrast, LE with EM-like lesions and a peculiar immunological pattern, including positive rheumatoid factor, antinuclear antibodies and a serum antibody against an extract of human tissues recently recognized as similar to Ro (SSA), constitutes an established entity named Rowell's syndrome. We describe a woman with LE and long-standing widespread vesiculobullous and necrotic haemorrhagic EM-like lesions in combination with Ro (SSA) and scl-70 antibodies and the typical laboratory findings of the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), namely lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin antibodies and prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time. This case could conceivably be consistent with a diagnosis of Rowell's syndrome, if the latter is regarded as a clinicopathological spectrum. However, the coexistence of LE, persistent EM-like disease and incomplete APS may also fulfil the diagnostic criteria for the 'multiple autoimmune syndromes'. We speculate that the laboratory markers of APS play a pivotal part in such an unusual clinical presentation.
