Evaluation of 20 years of environmental monitoring data around Swedish nuclear installations

Spatial and temporal variations of 14C in Fucus spp. in Swedish coastal waters

Carbon-14 (14C) dominates the collective effective dose from globally dispersed long-lived radionuclides produced by and released from the nuclear power industry. Literature data on the discharge of 14C to the marine environment from nuclear power plants (NPPs) and its dispersion in the marine ecosystem are sparse. The local marine 14C background must be determined before the 14C enrichment in the marine environment from a NPP can be estimated. This is not trivial since marine activity concentrations of 14C vary spatially, partly due to long-range transport of 14C from other anthropogenic sources. We have analysed 14C in samples of several species of brown algae (Fucus spp.) collected at 45 sites along the Swedish coast in 2020. At sites remote from NPPs, the 14C activity concentrations per unit mass of carbon (here expressed as Fraction Modern, F14C) were significantly higher on the west coast than on the east coast (F14C up to about 1.10 in Skagerrak, and about 1.01, close to atmospheric levels, in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia). On the west coast, F14C showed a strong correlation with salinity, both of which increased towards the north. This indicates that 14C is carried from other anthropogenic sources (e.g. from the nuclear fuel reprocessing plants at La Hague and Sellafield). The highest value of F14C observed was close to the Ringhals NPP on the west coast, F14C ≈ 1.3, which is higher than expected in the terrestrial environment of this NPP. We also report on temporal variations of F14C in Fucus spp. collected at Särdal on the Swedish west coast during the period 1967-2020. The values of F14C in the Särdal marine samples collected after the 1990s are clearly higher than F14C in clean air CO2, indicating contributions of 14C of anthropogenic origin.

Assessment of radiological consequences due to routine atmospheric discharges from nuclear power plants

The radiological consequences of operational atmospheric discharges from nuclear power plants are analyzed by using coupled long-range atmospheric dispersion models with time-dependent dose and risk assessment models. The coupled model is applied to atmospheric discharges from twelve assumed nuclear power plants located at three different sites in Turkey. Individual as well as collective doses and risks are analyzed. The effects of multi-location food supply and interregional movements of people in the computational domain are also investigated while computing individual effective dose and risk values. The values computed are found to be negligible compared with values from natural background and exposures from nuclear weapon testing.

Distribution of artificial gamma-ray emitting radionuclide activity concentration in the top soil in the vicinity of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and other regions in Lithuania

The impact of the operating Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) on the contamination of top soil layer with artificial radionuclides has been studied. Results of the investigation of artificial gamma-ray emitting radionuclide distribution in soil in the vicinity of the INPP and distant regions in Lithuania in 1996-2008 (INPP operational period) show that nowadays (137)Cs remains the most important artificial gamma-ray emitting radionuclide in the upper soil layer. Mean (137)Cs activity concentrations in the top soil layer in the vicinity of the INPP were found to be significantly lower compared to those in remote regions of Varėna and Plungė (~300 km from INPP). In 1996 and 1998 mean (137)Cs activity concentrations were in the range of 28-45 Bq/kg in the nearest vicinity to the INPP, 103 Bq/kg in Varėna and 340 Bq/kg in Plungė region. (137)Cs activity concentrations were 5-20 times lower in meadow soil (4-14 Bq/kg) compared to swamp and forest soil. (60)Co, the INPP origin radionuclide, was detected in samples only in 1996 and 2000, and the activity concentration of (60)Co was found to be in the range from 0.4 to 7.0 Bq/kg at the sampling ground nearest to the INPP. Average annual activity concentrations of the INPP origin (137)Cs and (60)Co in the air and depositions in the INPP region were modeled using Pasquill-Gifford equations. The modeling results of (137)Cs and (60)Co depositional load in the INPP vicinity agree with the experimentally obtained values. Our results provide the evidence that the operation of INPP did not cause any significant contamination in soil surface.

Performance of data acceptance criteria over 50 months from an automatic real-time environmental radiation surveillance network

The automatic real-time environmental radiation surveillance network of Catalonia (Spain) comprises two subnetworks; one with 9 aerosol monitors and the other with 8 Geiger monitors together with 2 water monitors located in the Ebre river. Since September 2006, several improvements were implemented in order to get better quality and quantity of data, allowing a more accurate data analysis. However, several causes (natural causes, equipment failure, artificial external causes and incidents in nuclear power plants) may produce radiological measured values mismatched with the own station background, whether spurious without significance or true radiological values. Thus, data analysis for a 50-month period was made and allowed to establish an easily implementable statistical criterion to find those values that require special attention. This criterion proved a very useful tool for creating a properly debugged database and to give a quick response to equipment failures or possible radiological incidents. This paper presents the results obtained from the criterion application, including the figures for the expected, raw and debugged data, percentages of missing data grouped by causes and radiological measurements from the networks. Finally, based on the discussed information, recommendations for the improvement of the network are identified to obtain better radiological information and analysis capabilities.

Evaluation of 25 y of environmental monitoring data around Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS), Kalpakkam, India

The Environmental Survey Laboratory at Kalpakkam, India carries out elaborate monitoring programme involving atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic samples for radioactivity to evaluate the impact of operating two pressurised heavy water reactors. This paper presents the evaluation of 25 y (1983-2008) data. Statistical analysis of the environmental data for different radionuclides showed that the data best fits log-normal distribution. The data analysed showed that fission products such as (137)Cs, (90)Sr and (131)I were due to global fallout only. A ratio of 0.2 was obtained for (90)Sr to (137)Cs in air filter samples, only during Chernobyl accident period. The transfer factor of (137)Cs and (90)Sr for rice was computed to be 0.23 and 0.03 and vegetables 0.25 and 0.10, respectively. Activation products (3)H and (41)Ar are the only radionuclides that are related to MAPS operation. A strong correlation (r = 0.9) was observed between (3)H activity in air and (3)H discharged to the atmosphere. A similar correlation (r = 0.8) was observed in (3)H concentration in seawater and (3)H discharged in the liquid waste. The annual internal dose due to (3)H and annual external dose due to (41)Ar evaluated in the last 25 y show that the members of the public received less than 2 % of the dose limit (1 mSv y(-1)) set by ICRP 72.

Evaluation and assessment of 25 years of environmental radioactivity monitoring data at Tarapur (India) nuclear site

The evaluation and assessment of monitoring data generated over a period of 1983-2007 (25 years) of a nuclear facility is presented. Time trends of particulate radioactivity, correlation between (137)Cs in discharge canal seawater and station discharged activity and correlation of (137)Cs, (60)Co, and (131)I in marine species such as sponge and Nerita (gastropod) and corresponding discharged activity are discussed. The concentration of (137)Cs and (131)I in seawater versus biota are discussed. A good correlation between (137)Cs in seawater and (137)Cs in liquid waste discharged was observed (R(2) = 0.8, p < 0.001). Similarly, correlation was good for Nerita and discharged concentration of (137)Cs, (131)I and (60)Co (R(2) = 0.55-0.73 and p < 0.001). The measurements over the years indicated that there is no accumulation of radionuclides in either the terrestrial or aquatic environments. The mean (137)Cs decreased from the pre-operational levels: 7.0-3.6 Bq kg(-1) in soil, 0.91-0.016 Bq L(-1) in milk and 0.28-0.036 Bq kg(-1) in vegetation. Similarly, the mean (90)Sr in these matrixes decreased from 3.9 to 0.26 Bq kg(-1); 0.37-0.011 Bq L(-1) and 0.34-0.022 Bq kg(-1) respectively. Cesium-137 of about 700 microBq m(-3) was measured in the air filter disks during 1986 and there was a decrease of three orders of magnitude in concentration over the 25 years. The evaluation of environmental data indicated that the radionuclide concentrations and potential impacts, in terms of effective dose to the members of public, have significantly reduced since 1969.

Bioaccumulation of 51Cr, 63Ni and 14C in Baltic Sea benthos

The Baltic Sea is a species-poor, semi-enclosed, brackish sea, whose sediments contain a wide range of contaminants, including sediment-associated metals and radionuclides. In this study, we have examined and compared bioaccumulation kinetics and assimilation efficiencies of sediment-associated (51)Cr, (63)Ni and (14)C in three key benthic invertebrates (the deposit-feeding Monoporeia affinis, the facultative deposit-feeding Macoma baltica, and the omnivorous Halicryptus spinulosus). Our results demonstrate that (i) all radionuclides were accumulated, (ii) the different radionuclides were accumulated to various extents, (iii) small changes in organic carbon concentration can influence the accumulation, and (iv) the degree of accumulation differed only slightly between species. These processes, together with sediment resuspension and bioturbation, may remobilise trace metals from the sediment to the water and to higher trophic levels, and therefore should be taken into account in exposure models and ERAs.
